Events for Thurs May 9 to Sat May 11, 2002

Thursday, May 9 through Infinity

Toast Bar (Hamburg, Germany). At the end of Bunuel's "Simon of the Desert", Simon finds himself in hell - a New York jazz club. Party Volcano wants to spend eternity at a place called Toastbar. It's more or less a living room with a bartender. The floor is covered with peanut shells and on the wall is a signthat reminds everybody what life is about: "We strongly believe that any movement starts with singing in groups". Toast Bar Wohlwillstrasse, Hamburg (Germany). Free. Simon of the Desert: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0059719

Thursday, May 9

Seattle Art Museum Free on Thursdays. During the Spring and Summer SAM is free on every Thursday evening. Tonight is a good opportunity to check out the African Art Exhibit at SAM which ends May 19. Info on African Art Exhibit: http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/Exhibitions/LongSteps/default.htm This reminds PV that we are in the midst of the 8 year anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. One of the many horrifying aspects of this genocide is the deliberate, calculated decision to not act and to let the slaughter continue by President Clinton: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2001/09/power.htm How's that for an uplifting kick-off to the weekend.

SAM, 100 University St. Open until 9 PM.

Journey to Ground Zero @Photographic Center Northwest. This is part of an ongoing series by PCNW on photojournalism after 9/11. Tonight, Seattle Times Photographer Alan Berner will show slides, discuss his work and answer questions. PCNW often sponsors really interesting lecturers on photographic subjects, so the odds are that this will be very good. $12. 6 to 9 PM. PCNW 900 12th Ave.

CoCA is starting a music night on Thursday evenings from 8 PM to Midnight. Music starts at 9 PM. This is what CoCA says about this, its first CoCA-Motion night: “Pretty, songs with a dramatic flare, led by singer-songwriter Gary Mula; ‘MULA, emotively dark, song driven music with a calculated sonic pulse’. Also appearing ROMA. ‘Enter into a heavy soundscape with this three piece band. Dark, stylish, cool music to get lost in.’” Regarding this event Party Volcano feels like Sybil—torn apart by multiple-personality disorder. Two out of three of PV’s personalities enjoy listening to live music. The third personality of PV hates live music so much, he would rather listen to George W struggling to utter an articulate sentence. Doubtless the third personality is the bad, irrational one. Maybe you should give this a chance. Free to CoCA members. $5 for others. CoCA Gallery, 1420 11th Ave. Map: http://cocaseattle.org/CoCAMap.htm Multiple personality disorder info: http://www.multiple-personality.com/

Friday, May 10

Video artist Robert Campbell; Maureen Whiting Dance Co; K.D.Schill and Sarah Harlett Installation @ Jack Straw New Media Gallery. This is an interesting installation which features both an art video piece AND a live dance performance. Three out of three of PV’s personalities do agree on enjoying live dance performance & Maureen Whiting is a very talented choreographer. Added enticement will be checking out the costumes that were designed by the talented K.D. Schill. PV is there! Live dance performance begins @ 8 PM. There will also be a showing of the video piece around that time and again at 9 PM. Free! Jack Straw New Media Gallery, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE (in the University District)

Mama’s House Party @ FuNC. Yes, another FuNC event. But based upon Scott Greer’s assessment, “I've been to 3 events at FuNC- all very trippy and fun. If nothing else, there is sure to be drugs and partial nudity,” Party Volcano is upgrading it’s diet from Low FuNC to Medium FuNC. $12 w/o costume OR $10 with costume. FuNC 140 N. Canal St (across from Redhook Brewery in Fremont). 10 pm-ish onwards. More info: http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/285f9506/bc/Mail+Attachments/mama_s_party.doc?bcbls28AwwSEhXhq

The Golden Poodle (Hamburg, Germany). If you happen to be in Hamburg this weekend you should stop at The Golden Poodle (Der Goldene Pudel), one of PV’s favorite bars in this amazing city. PV notes that on Friday nights it is always packed. DJs are spinning, people are dancing, smoking, and drinking. There is one DJ that tells stories about his life between the tracks. Check out their website: http://www.pudel.com. In order to enter the site you have to drag the gas can on the entrance first, then you drag the matches on top. After that you have to put out the fire with the water bucket. Then they will finally let you in. Crazy motherfuckers! DJ: http://www.pudel.com/flash/gallery/photos/victor.html Schedule: http://www.pudel.com/flash/news/prg.html Golden Poodle, close to the Hafenstrasse in Hamburg. Free.

Free Drinks & Fashion Show @ I-Spy. Yes, it’s true: free drinks but only for one hour and only Pucker Vodka martinis and Heineken. It’s part of a promotion by Pucker which is sponsoring a Fashion Tour 2002 in nightclubs. This is what I-Spy says: “Bringing six of the hottest new fashion designers and a night of flavored martinis to one of Seattle's hottest nightclubs aka I Spy. An unforgettable night…not to be missed!” Well, PV is not so sure about these being the “hottest new designers” (though the clothing should be interesting) and is doubtful about this being an “unforgettable night”, and is most definitely sure that I-Spy is not “one of Seattle’s hottest nightclubs”, but, what the hell, we are talking free drinks (if only for an hour) and leggy models. Can’t be too bad. Includes DJ’s: Wesley Holmes & John Lemmon; and designers: Annabelle (NY), Corey Lynn Calter (LA), Dimitri Joseph (NY), Lynn Lugo (LA), Miche Kimsa (NY), Michie (NY). The catch is you must email Steven Severin at: steven@ispyseattle.com to get on the list for admittance (tell him your name and the number of guests that will be with you). I-SPY, 1921 Fifth Ave, Free open bar 9:30-10:30 for Pucker Martinis and Heineken. Fashion Show @ 10 PM.

Saturday, May 11

Barbara De Pirro's 'another place'. Barbara is showing a set of photos at Ballard's art walk on Saturday. "Another place" is "an exhibition poised between abstraction and realism. Barbara De Pirro's photography offers a glance into a different world. Her imagery explores culture through its symbolism, pattern, texture and color. This new body of work reflects her visions during recent travels in Mesoamerica." Ballard stinks in my opinion, but Barbara's exhibition would give me a good reason to visit this strange place, where friendly people move, talk, and dress as they were poised between abstraction and realism. Camelion Design, 5335 Ballard Ave. NW, 7-10pm, free. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=BarbaraDePirro_05_11_2002_F.jpg http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=BarbaraDePirro_05_11_2002_B.jpg http://www.depirro.com
