Events from Thu 6/27 to Sun 6/29/2002

Events from Thu 6/27 to Sun 6/29.
partyvolcano@yahoo.com

Party Volcano receives a lot of invitations for smaller house warming and birthday parties, private potlucks, Bah Mitzvahs, etc. but in most of the cases we are told to not send those invitations to the “hundreds of people” we know, which is totally understandable. As of Wednesday we have 215 on our list – most of them are known to us. We are a small fish in comparison to Andrea Martin’s PubMixer, who has 2000 on her list. Andrew and I met her recently and were surprised when she estimated that only 200 usually show up at the events she hosts. Here at Party Volcano’s Institute for Social Studies we tend to believe that only a fraction of the people from our list actually goes to the events we recommend. We really hope that this will not be the case with Adam’s Kite Surfing Party in Ravenna on Friday. It will be a big private party and everybody from our list is invited. Thanks Adam!

Beer at CoCA. “CoCA will be open from 12 Noon until 9 PM. No entertainment is scheduled but we will be serving $1 draft beers after 5 PM. Please stop by, enjoy the show, pet the dog, hang out on the deck, and watch the sunset.”
CoCA, 1420 11th Ave. Noon-9pm.

American Traditional. Handsome Tyrone is highly recommending this opening and Party Volcano has no reason to disagree with him: “American Traditional - A homo erotic showcase.
Mr. John Butler is one of Seattle's most infamous eccentric artists and a must see. Cocktails, food, homo erotic showcase, lounge in the beautiful garden. This show is going to be hosted and curated by the man himself… Please feel free to bring food or beverages. There will be refreshments of course. Mr. John Butler is going to really give us one hell of a show. Afterwards please join the crew as we continue the evening at sit n spin for UFO AU GO GO an evening of mod6t's sounds groovy beats gogo dancers, and live music by the Victor Mature.”
Party Volcano had a chance to visit John Butler’s Furnace and the garden while accidentally crashing Jackie Hell’s (Pho Bang) birthday party two weekends ago. It was a little bit strange entering the same garden from two different parties on the same evening. I guess this is a small town…
Butlers Furnace. 1510 12th Ave. Free. BYOB. 6-10pm.

“It’s Just Like The Movies”. This opening is actually a sequel. Here's what their press release says: “It’s just like the movies was a phrase used so often by the media and the bewildered American public to describe the devastating events that took place in New York City. Provoked by these horrible events and the reoccurring theme that followed them, The Li’l Red Shack Gallery/ArtStar Project exhibited in December 6 - February 3, 2001. It’s Just Like the Movies Part I”.
Funny typo: provoked by those horrible events in September 2001, Li’l Red Shack Gallery responded with a show in February “2001”. Okay, it’s not that funny. Speaking of “not funny” - I don’t think this opening will be much fun. I’d skip it.
Li'l Red Shack Gallery, 1028 1st Ave S (one block N. of Safeco Field). Free. Opening Reception 7-11pm.

THE TINY PICTURE CLUB. “Don't miss Portland's Tiny Picture Club when they stop through Seattle Thursday nite. Presenting 14 films about churlish renegades and champions of justice contending for supremacy of the universe - to the score of live musicians including Chris Ballew (Presidents of United States of America) and Tad Hutchinson (Young Fresh Fellows).”
Market Theater (in Post Alley, Pike Place Market), 8pm, $7
http://www.tinypictureclub.org

UFO AU GO GO. Two weeks ago we were recommending UFO Au Go Go but we got the date wrong. Mea culpa. It’s tonight: "A night of mod scenes and groovy sounds. 60's mod and psychedelic rock, soul, Brit Pop, Acid Jazz and International Pop will be on the aural menu. Go Go Dancers and far out projections will be on the visual.
Featuring DJ Chris Porter and Guest DJ DJANGO.
Special guest band - THE VICTOR MATURE.
Visual projections provided by Killing Frenzy Productions."
Happening the last Thursday of every month at Sit and Spin. 2219 Fourth Ave, 9pm, $6.
Mod dress encouraged.”
www.ufoaugogo.com.

Friday 6/28.

THE BEST OF BOTH COASTS. “New York City and Seattle filmmakers together on one screen featuring films by: Steve Creson, Janice Findley, Joel Schlemowitz, Sandra Gibson, Rachel Lordkenaga, Jeanne Liotta, Jon Behrens, Jenny Packard, Jacob Burckhard, Reed O'Beirne and MM Serra. Due to the smashing success of the dual screenings of East Meets West (in Seattle) and West Meets East (in New York) during the Satellites 2002 festival, this encore screening has been assembled combining the best from both shows into one program.”
Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater (2320 2nd Ave.), 7:30pm & 9:30pm, $6 (21+).

Bonafide @ Nation. “SUB_SONIC presents BONAFIDE!, a new rump-shakin' party that happens every Friday at Nation. BONAFIDE! is styled after the best of house parties but with more party and less house. Featuring resident DJs AC Lewis and J-Justice spinning a unique and unpretentious mix of fun and funky beats and bass-lines from across all genres of quality dance music.“
Notice that the Grand Opening Party will be on Friday. Let me also add that you should contact Jason (J-Justice) if you would like to get on his guest list. He is a really nice guy. I met him three weeks ago when he was spinning at the Baltic Room. We stopped by after watching “The Fast Runner” at SIFF but didn’t stay for very long because we were still digesting this great movie. I am sure I’ll go to Bonafide on one of these Friday evenings.
Nation, 1921 5th Ave. $5. 9pm-2am.

Kite Surfing Party. Our loyal readers know Party Volcano has strong opinions. In this case we want to be clear about Adam’s Kite Surfing party this Friday: Cancel your hiking trip for Saturday (yes, you Marta) and stop drumming in the woods (yes, you lovely INB folks). The only drumming and hiking I am planning for Saturday is drumming on my neighbors’ doors as I am trying to find home and hiking into my bed at 5am in the morning after this party, which I promise will be a lot of fun.

Adam writes: “For real this time, it's our last party because I'm be moving out - after Gopi and Kris expressed concern that our last party was in fact our last, I agreed to throw another very last one (now they won't even be here!). This will be our summer kickoff 'kite surfing' party!
‘What's kite surfing?’ ye ask - well, imagine an extreme, flying freestyle trapeze act dangling from a kite. Have you ever seen a bunch of folks suspended on the horizon like yoyos, going ‘boiing, boiing’ on above the water while holding onto huge kites? If you haven't, this is definitely the occasion to check it out. We're bringing this year's kite surfing event indoors for a final, regal throw down at my now former household.”

Adam knows lots of people and this is the first time Party Volcano is actually allowed to invite everybody from our list. He is expecting people from the kite surfing community from the North West and Oregon traveling to Seattle just for this party as well as the usual international crowed. The parties I have been to at Adam’s house were always fun. The people were friendly, interesting, and from all over the world - which should not surprise you if you know that Adam is Canadian.

I wish that I could tell some funny stories about Adam’s flaming sugar cone party last November – if I were only able to remember what exactly happened. The next morning I woke up with a piece of paper in my wallet: “Call me on Tuesday 6:03pm to figure out”. To figure out what? – Apparently I had had too many burning sugar cone drinks at Adam’s party. Adam said he is not planning on serving those drinks from hell on Friday. So I guess you will be safe. On the other hand I might try to tattoo a washer and dryer on your back anyway (yes, you Angela)!

Meghan’s Epic Garage Sale. Meghan is still in town. She writes: “This is it: the final, the monster, the epic garage sale.

and yes, that damn Piñata is still looking for a home.”

I can’t believe the Trainor Piñata has not been sold yet. Those are the items that you’ll be able to sell on eBay for big money in two years from now. It’ll become a collector’s item like Michael Jackson’s nose. Think about it: it’s an authentic Trainor Piñata!
Meghan’s Garage. 533 11th & Mercer. 10am-4pm

Slender Means Society @ Secluded Alley Works. The Stranger loves this monthly hodgepodge of various art acts, made up of music acts, dance pieces, and other performances. We, at Party Volcano, have heard both extremes from our party scouts. One scout said: "Really bad, amateurish, boring". Another scout said: "Really great, interesting, creative." And this was about the same show! It's possible that the scouts went at different times during the 6 hours that comprises a SMS show, and so saw different acts--hence the extreme divergence in opinion. In any case, Party Volcano is intrigued by the press release which says that this SSaturday's show includes: "...Miranda July, Al Larsen of somevelvetsidewalk, aveo, Charming Snakes, Swastika Girls, Serena Tideman, Thickness, Endless Spiral, and others. Also featuring a Kissing Booth [and] Chapel of Love..." Kissing booth? Chapel of Love? Instead of sending party scouts, Party Volcano may have to investigate in person....
Secluded Alley Works, 113 12th Ave (cross street is Yesler), 4 pm to 10 pm, $5.

“The Wizard of Oz” @ Volunteer Park Amphitheater. A classic: Dorothy Gale is swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. Some people believe they have discovered bizarre coincidences after listening to Pink Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon” while watching “The Wizard of Oz”. So don’t forget to bring your CD player if you want to test their theory. This movie night is part of this year’s Seattle Pride events. Remember: there is no place like home and home is where your heart is - in the park.
Amphitheater at Volunteer Park on Capital Hill. Free. 9-11pm.

Costume benefit party @FuNC. “Arson Island Resort is hosting a costume benefit party, bla, bla. The benefit will feature fire performances, unknown DJs, bla, bla, bla.” Party Volcano’s FuNC diet is turning into a serious eating disorder. At this point we feel like eating until we vomit so we can eat more. Why are we even mentioning those stupid FuNC events here? I am wondering what’s at FuNC next week, though…
FuNC. 160 N Canal Street (Right across from the Redhook Trolleyman). 9pm-2am. $10 at the door or $8 with costumes.

DJ Cheb i Sabbah @I-Spy. This is the third time I am recommending Cheb I Sabbah without having the chance to see him. He was at the Baltic Room in December and at Chop Suey in April. I have heard only good things about him and I really hope that I will make it this time. The Stranger writes: “It's easy for a DJ to sound contrived--or just fucking ridiculous--while attempting to spin world music. The possibility of extreme cheesiness lurks within every llooped bodhran and sampled sitar that shows up in the mix. Algerian-born, San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah, on the other hand, lives and breathes his preferred subject matter, the music of Algeria's rai artists, giving his work a sense of authority. On his latest disc, Krishna Lila, DJ Cheb forgets about beats and uses traditional Hindu devotionals to provide undercurrents of rhythm.”
I-Spy/Nation, 1921 5th Ave (between Virginia & Stewart), 9:00PM, $12 at the door. Opening will be Peter Madril (Neverstop).

Cold Lava…

Photos from Free Drinks & Fashion Show @ I-Spy (5/10/02). Yes, it was true: You could get free drinks but only for one hour and only Pucker Vodka martinis – which, by the way, were disgusting. This event was part of a promotion by Pucker which was sponsoring a Fashion Tour in nightclubs. Steven Stone kindly forwarded some photos.

Vital 5's Arbitrary Art Grant (6/22/02). One phone call made my day: “Hi, this is Greg. I am looking at Bonsai Kitty. Who are you?” This is pretty much how I won this year’s Arbitrary Art Grant. Competition was tough. The One-Dollar Dog definitely controlled the area between Westlake Center and SAM. Some people put up signs claiming that they had lost their marbles or their sense of humor. I really liked “Have you seen my wife?”
I was putting up two posters: “Sake, my little Bonsai Kitten” and “Have You smelled me?”.
“Bonsai Kitten” describes the lost Eastern art of sealing kittens inside rectilinear jars to reshape them into aesthetically pleasing forms. You should go to www.bonsaikitten.com and check it out. The reaction to that site is actually even funnier (see cruel.com).
The other poster referred to a Ren and Stimpy episode called “Son of Stimpy”. In that episode a little sound and a funny smell issues from Stimpy's butt to his bewilderment. Consumed with a great sense of loss Stimpy decides to look for his missing son. There is this one scene where Stimpy puts up posters showing a picture of his fart. It says: “Have you smelled me?”
