“A man serves coffee in a tiny cup—so tiny you might think you were drinking oblivion.”

--Andre Gide, April 1899

Poetry & Music @ CoCA. This is the press release for this weeks CoCA’s Thursday night event:

The theme for the night is: H.O.T. - Hot Poetry for Hot Blooded Peoples
Hosted by Rosa Hothead Powers
Selected readers include:
Alyssa Burrows sings the blues and plays the guitar
Roger Weaver reading sappy man poetry
Gabrielle B.,
And some young ladies from the Seattle Young Peoples Project (SYPP), Jai, Bailey and Rachel
There will be visual video complimenting the readers, as well as a Mini
Open Mic.
DJ Superjew will also be mixing up some hot and nasty beats!
HOT!
Despite such an unfortunate “Hot” laden press release, PV does like the idea that CoCA is promoting poetry, so we include it.
CoCA, 1420 11th Ave between Pike and Union, 728-1890, 9 pm, $5.00

And, what the hell, in the spirit of poetry we offer you the following for your reading pleasure from Ranier Maria Rilke’s gorgeous Sonnets to Orpheus (this is sonnet xxix, from part 2):

Silent friend of many distances, feel
how your breath enlarges all of space.
Let your presence ring out like a bell
into the night. What feeds upon your face
grows mighty from the nourishment thus offered.
Move through transformation, out and in.
What is the deepest loss that you have suffered?
If drinking is bitter, change yourself to wine.
In this immeasurable darkness, be the power
that rounds your senses in their magic ring,
the sense of their mysterious encounter.
And if the earthly no longer knows your name,
whisper to the silent earth: I’m flowing.
To the flashing water say: I am.

Fremont Summer Solstice Parade. “The parade will travel through the heart of Fremont and head east along N. 34th to Stoneway, where it will hook up with Northlake Way and head east to Gas Works Park. The parade culminates with the Solstice Pageant, scheduled to begin at 3:30pm, at Gas Works Park. While the parade route and pageant site have changed a bit this year, Fremont will be very congested.”

I had already been in a bad mood when I arrived at the Fremont Parade in 1998. But it got worse. I thought I found a good spot from where I was able to see the parade until I realized why people had avoided the place I picked. An obnoxious father had his little son on his shoulders and was commenting on what was happening in every imaginable detail: "Look, there is a tree! And there is a dragon! Thank God, it's not a real dragon!" Everybody around me was suffering and rolling their eyes but nobody felt like telling this guy to shut up. "Are you going to explain the whole fucking parade to him?" I asked politely. I added that I would start explaining the parade how I was seeing it if he didn't relax and promised him he and his son would want to take a shower afterwards. They left shortly after our little conversation and everybody felt better. "Look, there is a man on a bicycle", I thought, "Thank God, he isn't wearing anything."

Fremont Summer Solstice Parade will begin at noon at N. 36th & 1st Ave. Free.

Vital 5's Arbitrary Art Grant. Another brilliant Vital 5 idea: “$500 to one random person in the field of creative writing. Make a post a reward for a lost pet, fictitious animal or missing person, complete with photograph or drawing, description and contact phone number. We will randomly wander the streets of downtown Seattle 6/22 and the first poster we see after 2:02pm between 1st Ave and Boren Ave, Yesler to Denny will immediately be called and summoned to collect the $500 cash grant. No answer, no luck."

Be prepared to face tough competition from Party Volcano’s own creative Graphics Design Lab! Even if you are not interested in participating in this fun event you should come and at least see what other people have come up with. By the way, has anybody seen my Bonsai Kitten?

Fremont Fair Block Party @ FuNC. If you don’t get enough of the parade, you can always go to this block party. However, we at Party Volcano are laying off our High FuNC diet from a couple of weeks ago. We’re now down to a Medium FuNC diet. Although this looks like it might be fun.

Cost is $8.00. Starts at 8:30 pm. FuNC, 160 N. Canal Street.

Fire Fashion Show and Benefit @ 619 Boren Ave N. Jenny Uribe went to the Water benefit last year and was so impressed that she joined this year’s Fire benefit as a volunteer Salsa dancer. She and Claudio Valentino will give a dramatic salsa demo that includes numerous flips, slides and something called the “coffee grinder”. Jenny says: “I’m kind of nervous but Claudio will make me look good.” And the thing is: he will. Party Volcano saw Claudio at the Loveshack Go Away Party cruise (turns out Loveshack piggy-backed onto Claudio’s already scheduled Salsa Cruise). Claudio dressed in a white suit a la Tom Wolfe, long hair pulled back in a pony tail. We thought of Latin Mafioso until he took to the floor. Then we thought of Latin Mafioso who can dance like nothing you’ve ever seen before. His dancing is actually deserving of the superlative heavy CoCA press release above: hot, Hot, HOT, H.O.T.

But this is only a small part of the program which mainly focuses on a Fashion Show. PV has been hearing really good things about this event for sometime, although we warn you that it is slightly pricey (though it is for a good cause: Northwest Burn Foundation).

Tix: $23 in advance/ $30 at the door. Location: Warehouse at 619 Boren Ave N. Time: 9:00 PM .

Sunday, June 23

James Ellroy @ Kane Hall (2 pm) and Bailey Coy Books (7 pm). James Elroy is an American legend for his biting, paranoiac crime fiction. He’s popular and also critically acclaimed. He’s an old dude, now. His youth was marked by horrific tragedy (his mother was murdered in 1958 when he was 10 [the murder remained unsolved]) and by crazy acting-out (he nearly went insane due to alcohol and drug abuse). He’s in town to talk about his new novel, The Cold Six Thousand. Party Volcano thinks this will be interesting.

Free. 2 pm at Kane Hall room 130, UW Campus (pick up free advance tix at University Bookstore). 7 pm at Bailey Coy Books, 414 Broadway E (pick up free advance tix here).

PV’s note: Kane Hall is much bigger than Bailey Coy, so if this proves to be popular and you don’t bother getting advance tix, then Kane is the best bet for getting in to see Ellroy.

CoCA Underground Film Shorts Program @ CoCA. The Stranger is pumping this one: “Chicago filmmaker Rusty Nails and CoCA's Kathryn Bertram are presenting the CoCA Underground Film Shorts Program featuring over 20 weird, wacked-out, and just plain beautiful short films by the likes of David Lynch, Guy Madden, David Cronenberg, Kirsten Stoltman, and many more. There's a special emphasis on local filmmakers, and Nails, who has worked with Troma, John Waters, and the Dead Kennedys, should prove to be a lively host.”

CoCA, 1420 11th Ave between Pike and Union, 728-1890, 8:30 pm, Cost ???.

LOOPLOOP @ Chopsuey. Although, Party Volcano has not yet had a chance to check out Tuesdays at Chopsuey, we have been hearing good things about their new format LOOPLOOP, which involves experimental electronic music: dj’s, jazz musicians, et al mixing it up. This Tuesday, in particular, we are tempted to go because the talented Joe Dierker—whose dippin’ spinning we sometimes hear at art openings—will be involved.

$5. Starts at 9 pm. Chopsuey, 1325 E. Madison.
