Events from Wed 5/1 to Sun 5/5/2002

Wednesday 5/1.

Notions - Soft Sculpture. Party Volcano missed the opening of Jennifer McNeely’s Soft Sculptures on 4/1. But we will go to the closing reception on Wednesday. Notice this is an afternoon event from 4:30 to 6:00pm. Jennifer made those incredible Nubs in a cup at Vital 5’s shopping show in December last year. For that show she created a whole line of small soft objects that you just had to buy once you squeezed them because you couldn’t let go. Like Koalas. My brother once told me that it is prohibited to hug Koalas in Australia because otherwise enthusiastic huggers would break too many Koala ribs. You don’t have that problem with Nubs! And Nubs are never cranky like Koalas, which I just learned from worldkids.net .
Cornish College of the Arts. 23 Harvard Ave E., 4:30 - 6pm. Free hugs.

Barbara De Pirro’s Photos. Watson Kennedy represents Barbara De Pirro’s photography. She will be showing images from Italy, France and her recent trip to Oaxaca as part of Watson Kennedy’s first anniversary soiree. We are excited: our snack radar has detected champagne and treats. The first time I saw Barbara’s work was at the Nico Gallery. She showed three nice paintings. I was looking at the price tag of one of them and mumbled: “Hey, there is a zero missing at the end”. She said, “I am glad you noticed it”, before she went ahead and increased the price accordingly.
Watson Kennedy Fine Home. 1022 1st Ave, 5 to 8pm, free. Bring your nub.

Cartoons from the 1930s. You probably already know that Rendezvous has been reopened. I have been there three times already since the opening on 4/12. I like it but it’s different. The once professional drinking atmosphere has been replaced with background noise that turns into chatting about condo prices the more you pay attention to it. Well-dressed people greet their drinks with “I love this fucking lemon”. In the back of the bar there is a separate room, the Jewelbox Theater, that used to be a small movie theater in the 30ies. On Wednesday they are showing “a program of rarely screened films from the first golden age of animation.”
Jewelbox Theater at the Rendezvous. 2320 2nd Ave. Shows at 7:30pm & 9pm. $5.

Art Walk. Dave Suchoski is suggesting meeting at Pioneer Square Saloon at 6pm like last month. This is the plan: “Enjoy liquid delicacies / mingle with friends and acquaintances. Around 6:45, head out to peruse the local galleries & studios.” Don’t miss stopping by at 619 Western Ave. The forgotten works gallery on the 4th floor of the 619 Western Ave building is having an opening called disorder with works from Christina Collins, Bob Hansen, Jay Mason, and Nick Saad.
Forgotten Works Gallery, 619 Western Ave, 4th floor, 6-10pm, free.

Purple Onion Cabaret (in Vancouver BC). DJ SuperJew and DJ E-Z Action headline at a French/euro pop nite with other local DJs brought to you by Frank Yahr, the man behind last year's Geared to GoGO scooter rally. Vancouver BC is not exactly on Party Volcano’s way home. But I can recommend DJ SuperJew. She was spinning at that goat-blood-sucking-Burning-Man-birthday-party at the Rocket Science house a while ago. Be honest: when was the last time you had the chance to listen to Stereo Total or to one of Senior Coconut’s salsa Kraftwerk cover versions in the course of one evening?

DOGMETHON. In case you have never heard of Dogme movies: “Seven years ago, Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg penned a bold cinematic manifesto. With the expressed goal of countering ‘certain tendencies’ in contemporary cinema, they signed a ‘vow of chastity’, limiting their filmmaking endeavors to hand-held location shooting without any sets or special lighting.” It’s also possible that you have watched Dogme movies like The Celebration and The Idiots (the censored version probably), or Mifune without knowing they were certified Dogme movies. Even von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark looks like Dogme for most of the parts except for the scenes when Bjork sings. Many times I have wondered, maybe they just don’t know it better? You usually get dizzy from the hectic camera and you always miss something because most of the scenes are too dark. On the other hand Dogme movies work. Like with movies by Ozu, who only used few angles and a fixed camera position, stories magically move into the foreground once you don’t get distracted anymore by all those fancy technical tricks - like using light or moving the camera!
Anyway, from Friday to Sunday the Little Theater is presenting a Dogmethon featuring new local shorts, two documentaries, and two recent Dogme features made in the U.S. - all Seattle premieres.
Little Theater, 608 19th Ave. E. at Mercer. Showtimes: 675-2055.

Saturday 5/4.

FREE MOVEMENT @ Westlake Park. “Ever wonder what it would be like to listen to that wonderful dance music in downtown Seattle, skyscrapers towering above, tourists and the Citizens frolicking about to this new-fangled music…” This rally will start at noon and go until 6pm. You can figure out why six DJs are spinning all day at those sites listed below. I think, it may be nice to stop by if the weather is as fantastic as the last couple of days.
Westlake Park, 6th Ave and Stewart St in downtown, noon-6pm, free.

"Recent in Origin" at SAW. This show is "a visual anthem for the wet frontier". Mary Gross, Meghan Trainor, Chris Putnam, Joseph Dierker, and Ben Beres got together to "explore contemporary objects/themes that carry specific insinuatory power for each of us. These will act as guideposts for each of us in our need to absorb and transmit the emerging elements that make up the contemporary world and range from the mundane, like tea kettles, street noise and iv stands, to the delicate, like chromosomes and cells, to the technological, like machines and robots". This is the second time within a week I am reading a description that sounds very interesting even though I don’t understand a word. The first time it happened was when I was deciphering the construction plan of my new kitchen disposal unit. In both cases I hope they will "absorb and transmit emerging elements" for a long time. You have probably already seen Mary and Meghan’s work. This exhibition is very special, though. It will be Meghan’s last show before she is moving to New York. We should have another fake funeral!
Secluded Alley Works. 113 12th avenue (12th & Yesler), 6-10pm, free.

First war of the new millennium. The show features the work of the following twelve artists who were all asked to submit work in honest response to the new war. The exhibit will contain a variety of media including; video, ceramic, drawing, poetry, and chocolate.” Maybe they will lift the secret about Evil Bert and his connection to Bin Laden.

Sunday 5/5.

"Argentina Ahora" – Closing Show. Time flies by: Argentina, absinthe, tamale wrappers, funerals, blisters, worms, wigs, skirts, ceramic cocker spaniels. After all that excitement Party Volcano is glad that somebody is keeping track of closing shows. Thanks to Dave Suchoski we won’t miss Jennifer McNeely’s Soft Sculpture closing show on Thursday. And Tomiko is pointing out Argentina Ahora’s closing show on Sunday: “if you didn't have a chance to check it out, drop by Sunday afternoon...amazing images, text and footage.” The opening was on 4/13: "An exhibit of photos, words, and graphics documenting a nation's collapse and a people's creative response. Featuring the work of photographers from Buenos Aries, New York, Providence, and Seattle."
