Events 3/14 to 3/18/2002

This week Party Volcano's inbox has been filled with many suggestions and invites. Thanks so much for participating and letting us know about events. Last week we missed a party on Saturday that turned out to be bigger than expected. While CoCA and International House of Love were shutting down at around 2:30am it was still going on at an opening called 'Blender' (1222 1st Ave). A band started playing at 3am. Although I am sure the 'Blender' folks didn't get any baby clams for free like the CoCA crowed!
This week's list is very long. If you are in a hurry you might want to use Party Volcano's new photo album feature that shows pictures of flyers from most of the events below: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/lst?.dir=/Invitations&.src=ph&.view=t

Thursday, 3/14.

WATER Post Mortem Party. You might remember Party Volcano's recommendation of 'Water' (a benefit for water) in February this year. Despite two major catastrophes (no water, power generator blew up) it was good from what I have heard. This party sounds like it wants to make up for those disasters: "Please join us as we continue the celebration of WATER at the post event party that we didn't get to have. Darek Mazzone will set the "Watery" pace as originally planned AND you will have an opportunity to sneak a peek of WATER on film. Bring dollar bills for the fish bowl and help us continue to fight pollution one pipe at a time with WATER beneficiary Puget Soundkeeper Alliance." I have been to Bada Lounge twice. It felt like a bathroom filled with beautiful but boring yuppies. Don't confuse it with Barca, which is a wonderful place in my opinion.
Bada Lounge - 2230 First Avenue, 8:30pm. Free. Donations greatly appreciated.

Friday, 3/15

Vital 5: Heroes. For all ages, I guess: "Featuring the works of 400 elementary students, Heroes is a modern day barometer charting the role models, idols and objects of children's respect and admiration. Heroes is also an opportunity for children to help children, as all artwork is for sale at a modest $20.00 each, with all proceeds donated directly to Seattle's Childhaven." The opening reception will feature entertainment by the Petting Zoo Players and snacks (marshmallows?) will be provided too.
Vital 5 Productions, 2200 Westlake Ave (on the southeast corner of Westlake and Denny), 5-9pm

Roq La Rue: Shag. I like his work. Roq la Rue is presenting 'An Open Letter To The Emperor' a show of paintings and prints by Shag.
"Shag, (a name which comes from the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last name: Josh Agle) is a product of the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles, California. He was born a little too late to experience the culture and styles, which have always fascinated him and are present in most of his illustration and painting. Agle is intrigued with the slick commercial art and advertising of the late '50s and early '60s and he strives for a tight, clean and well-crafted appearance to his work."
Shag will be showing 8 original paintings as well as 30 previously sold out silk-screens. Notice that you need to come before 8:30pm if you want to use beer in order to get rid off that sticky marshmallow taste in your mouth! They always run out of alcohol.
Roq la Rue: 2224 2nd Avenue, next to Lava Loun! ge, 7-11pm.

Brides of March. This is an obscure event: "Put on your best white gown and join us for a reception of staggering proportions! This year we plan to marry Seattle's biggest phallic symbol, the Space Needle! But not before a quick shopping excursion and photo opportunity through Pacific Place, where we will visit such important landmarks as Victoria's Secret!" Pretty ambitious for a Friday evening in Seattle! That sounds like the group of Santas that was terrorizing downtown last December. Here is the full itinerary:
"6-7 Nite Lite.
7-9 Entertain Pacific Place.
9 Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!
10 Marry Space Needle
10:05 Divorce that prick
10:30 Celebrate our bridal power at the Five Point"
Nite Lite Lounge - 1926 2nd Ave, 6pm. Free.

BiddyBEAT Release Party. This release party for the debut issue of biddyBEAT is featuring performances by Pleaseeasour, Skylobby, House on a Hill and art work by Lamont Mudd, Jason Puccinelli, John Seal, Bryan Smith, Sam Trout. Pucinelli is that guy, who provided the paintings for V5's Immortality Clinic. You might also remember the really funny Vital 5 show with the paintings where you could stick your head through before you had your picture taken. BiddyBEAT is a new art magazine "without pretenses, features documentary-style articles, local gallery listings, fiction and more". This sounds like fun!
ArtStar 1020 1st Ave S, 9pm. Donation.

Saturday 3/16

Goodbye Superflat Plane. What would you do with a full-size, yet soft, Zero fighter plane crafted from 25,000 micro photos taken of a plastic toy model airplane after displaying it at Henry Art Gallery? You'd burn it of course. Meghan is reminding the Party Volcano that "Katsushige Nakahashi will be burning the plane at 'sunset', which sounds like 6pm at this latitude. The public part starts officially at 5:30pm, however if you want to volunteer to help put the photographs back together and stuff the plane with nice, flammable newspapers you should show up at 4pm. The event will be at Sandpoint/Magnuson Park at the north end of the park intuitively situated near the former airplane hanger. Tony from the Henry mentioned that they had to get a special waiver because of the fumes, but is assured that the toxicity should be no problem as long as no one stands downwind huffing." I am as excited as Meghan I could just puke - even without having inhaled th! e toxic fumes. I ! will go!
Sandpoint/Magnuson Park, 6:16pm (sunset). Free (intoxication).

Open studios at the MAR-LAC Building. See the studios of Karen Liebowitz, Casey Keeler, Christine Grykian, Kree Arvanitas, and more, plus the artwork, performance, and music of invited guests including Jesse Paul Miller, Jeppa Hall, Jason Glover, Leslie Clague, Jeff Miller, Christ 2000, Paul Davies (=SG?), Claude Zervas (Claude!), Randy Wood, and more.
MAR-LAC, 1426 Dearborn St (right next to the goodwill off of Rainer Ave). Park at the goodwill. Free.

William Harris Opening. This won't be much fun for colorblind people: "Harris carefully pours the individual colors of acrylic paint onto a prepared surface one at a time. As one color dries he drags a squeegee over the paint making subtle grooves on the surface. Before this color dries he applies the next primary color. As according to color theory these two different colors make a new color but because the layer beneath is semi dry they do not mix evenly accentuating a hidden linear pattern caused by the use of the squeegee."
Howard House Contemporary Art, 2017 2nd Ave, 6-8pm. Free.

Freeway House Party. Party Volcano has received an invitation to a house party on Saturday. The source is Martin Lovschall, a.k.a. Loveshack, that crazy guy, who invites 1500 people. You probably have received an invitation to Loveshack's 3rd Annual Latin Party Cruise. If not you may consider yourself as special'. My theory is that he has a huge list and a small list. This sounds like a suggestion to the small list. If you have already received it you may consider yourself as special' too. Here are the details: Corey Carter (and his friends?) is going to have a party with a DJ this time spinning R&B, Funk, Rap, and Disco music. They will be having at least one keg and some hard liquor and maybe two kegs. They may have to charge everyone like $2 for the cost of the kegs.
421 NE 43rd St. Free/BYOB or $2.

Sunday 3/17

St. Patrick's Day at Barca. Ray is kindly letting us all know about a little get together on Sunday. It's an alternative to all the Irish pubs. One of the owners of Barca is Irish so he is heading this up. He and his wife are making traditional stew. If the stew isn't enough of a meal, generous portions of Guiness will be served.
Barca, 11th between Pine on Pike, starting at 2pm. Free.

Emerald Reels Super-8 Lounge. "After a fifteen month hiatus, the Emerald Reels Super-8 Lounge (ERS8) returns to Seattle for a series of monthly Monday night screenings at the Sit & Spin featuring the amazing aural arrangements of Kid Hops, DJ for KEXP.org Expansions." In the last four years, ERS8 has screened over 185 films to audiences in Seattle, San Francisco, Telluride and Vancouver BC. I have been to three events and after every time I went I swore not to go to one of those Super-8 Lounges ever again. I don't know about Kid Hops but be prepared that 99% of the short films will be crap. The reason why I have broken my promise was because I found usually one film between the crap actually amazing and remarkable. This time I will resist and not repeat my mistakes . . . probably. Sit & Spin, 2219 4th Ave, 9pm. $6.
