Events 3/22 - 3/26/2002

Friday, 3/22.

Concert and art exhibit in Bellevue. Zina Pozen is hosting an exhibit of Yuri Degtjar's paintings, along with a concert of vocal performances by Anna Kazakova, accompanied by Elena Begun. It'll be an evening of art: "music, painting, and ... mingling ... with other interesting people like, and unlike, yourself. We are planning to start around 6pm, so that we may admire Yuri's paintings in the daylight. The concert starts at 7pm, with Anna's voice leading us into the twilight zone....
Refreshments and a traditional Russian ' tusovka' will ensue."
Zina Pozen, 4930 Highland Dr., Bellevue, 6pm, free.

SOIL Opening Party. This is my favorite. SOIL has found a new place. "Join the SOIL crew at 1317 E. Pine in the fantastic new space for beer and super cool music lineup."
Soil, 1317 E. Pine, 7pm, free. http://www.soilart.org/noartjustparty/index.html

NEITHER / NOR. "The first of four bi-monthly happenings, NEITHER / NOR is a late-night salon of new, rare, and unusual performances, selected and curated by the Bald Faced Lie company. Set in a gallery, audiences and performers can watch and present works in a more personal environment, where experimentation and interaction is welcomed. Beer and wine will be served prior to and throughout the evening."
Li'l Red Shack Gallery, 1028 1st Ave S (one block N. of Safeco Field), 10pm, $10.

Persephone's Dream (Nexus). I haven't changed my opinion: Nexus parties are overrated. They always run out of beer (on one evening we entirely relied on Scott's 'magic' jacket) and $10 suggested donation is way too much for a room filled with dancing, smelly hippies on drugs. Let's hope the neighbors on the 2nd floor are having another crack whore party or at least an 'alternative' bachelor party!
Nexus, 321 3rd Ave. S #302, $10 (smelly hippie) donation.

CIRCUS CONTRAPTION. First I read Circus Contraception, which sounded really interesting. But then I realized my mistake. I am not a big fan of circuses and cabarets. In fact on days like today I am convinced that the world would be a better place without them. Tablet seems to disagree with me when it talks about Circus Contraption: "Have you ever had crazy nightmares of being in a dark and twisted circus where giant worms jump through hoops, wild women fly through the air, and necrobalancers act out their crazy relationship woes? This is only the tip of the iceberg. If you have a yearning for the seedy circuses of long ago, you should not miss Circus Contraption's amazing show. It's really one of those performances you have to see to believe, and afterwards you will become addicted to their outlandish world."
I have been told that the show is actually pretty good. If you are planning on going you should avoid the show on Sun 3/24, 7pm. On that day they will have the one and only all-ages show. Why would you want to hang out with kids at that circus when it's not even about contraception?
Circus Contraption. Sand Point Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Fri/Sat 8pm, $15.

The Madcap Cabaret. The invite promises "an evening of experimental satire and rare genius". Its long list of artists sounds like a gigantic cabaret value pack: "Come and see performances by local experimental guitarist phenom Bill Horist, spoken word artist and national poetry slam competitor Paula Friedrich with bassist Coy King, the always wonderful Luminous Theater w/ Karen Heavan, Jen Faulkner and special guests, inspiring clarinet vignettes with the HarryBrian duo, avantgarde thumb pianist Ffej Mandel, singer-songwriter Stephanie Watson (formerly of Capitol Hillbillies ), brilliant dancing from the SugahhB butoh Ensemble, funny songs and dark quips with comedian/songwriter Harry Pierce , raucous hoe-downs with the one and only BANJOVI led by banjo player/ songwriter Guy Davis, poetry by the glowing eulogist Shelby Summers, 'open up your heart and let the spiders in' with the blues of Spider Music Orquestra, far out speculative political rants Seattle's own ranteur extraordinaire Phillip E. Craft ( creator of the once fabled Political Playhouse ) ,'Gypsy Arts' with the mischievous Palm reading by Magdalena, and awe-inspiring Tarot by Lizzy. All this and more plus special guests!!! Come see the most adventurous line-up of eccentric and brilliant artists, musicians, poets, dancers, and theater groups in Seattle blow the lid off this sleepy town." I like that they set Gypsy Arts in quotes.
Cafe Venus/ The Mars Bar, 609 Eastlake, $8.

UMO Party. FuNC is having another party. "This year, UMO Ensemble invites you to get dressed up in your funkiest costume, grab a friend or two, and come celebrate with us. Music, dancing, drinks and contests!"I am still on FuNC diet: I won't go to a FuNC party until somebody tells me I missed a great party at FuNC. Maybe you will?
FuNC, 160 N Canal Street (Right across from the Redhook Trolleyman), $15 with costume.

Slideluck Potshow. "For those who are unfamiliar with the Slideluck Potshow, it is no more than a slideshow and a potluck. One is asked to bring food, drink, and if they choose, a slide presentation lasting NO MORE than 5 minutes. You can bring slides that comment on the topic of Anticipation, but are not restricted to this. Feel free to show whatever you may be working on. And as a *new development,* if you
don't have slides, you can bring prints, or paintings, or what have you, and we will put them up on the wall before or during the potluck.
Hosting this fourteenth Slideluck Potshow will be Louann Rizor in her studio just south of downtown in this, what looks to be enormous, space."
