Ann Cummings@ CoCA

Another embarrassing freak show at CoCA:

Who says love isn't dangerous?
Ann Cummings, pianist

Featuring selected works by Franz Liszt, a composer from the 19th century known for his virtuosic abilities as a pianist and as one of the most dramatic composers from the Romantic era of classical music. His work expresses nearly every emotion known to humanity and is accented by his signature of transcendentalism. Cummings celebrates his abilities as a composer by programming works for a 77 minute performance that recreates the experience of transcendence. Adding to the drama, Cummings will wear different masks for each musical selection accompanied with brief commentary for each piece

I think “adding to the drama” is an accurate description. The email came with a picture showing Cummings wearing one of her stupid masks: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/partyvolcano/detail?.dir=2f39&.dnm=ea28.jpg
Who says CoCA shows aren’t tasteless?

Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab's 'Halfpenny Opera.'

Joshua writes:

...Halfpenny Opera!

So what are you waiting for? This Thursday, Friday and Saturday
represents your final opportunity to see Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab's
'Halfpenny Opera.' It's the show that the Seattle P-I calls 'punkdom,
anti-authoritarianism and creative chaos.' With puppets and politics,
high-energy performances and a scathing soundtrack, this is a show you
don't want to miss! Monkey Wrench has re-invented a classic tale of
lust, greed and corruption in a time of dark politics. Mac the Knife and
his twisted entourage come alive with puppets, masks and stage magic
from a stellar cast of puppeteers and performers

Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab is a cluster of Seattle area puppeteers who are
working to expand the public’s definition of puppetry by bringing their
blend of the surprising, the bizarre and the artistically excellent to
audiences around the Puget Sound.

At the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater, 2232 2nd Ave. in Belltown.
Thurs., Fri. and Sat. November 18, 19, 20
Performance at 8:00 SHARP. Adults 21 and over ONLY. ID required.
Tickets $12.00. Seniors and Students $10.00.
For reservations call (206) 675-4500. Online at BrownPaperTickets.com

Kirsten (Roq La Rue) writes:

On Friday, November 19 Larry Reid is hosting a big art party at Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th Avenue) to kick off "State Of Art: The New Slovene Avant Garde" festival. Charles Krafft returns from Holland with little Dutch windmills, together with new work from his NSK komrades. The party is free and follows a screening of the ultra mod Slovene film "Sweet Dreams."

And don't miss the Laibach show the next night at Neumo's (7:00 PM early show). The Laibach crew will join Krafft and friends on a panel on Sunday at the Film Forum moderated by Frye curator Robin Held.

“Bizarre and hilarious... A hysterically dark coming-of-age story…It’s the kind of neutral-hued, brutal nostalgia that only formerly Communist countries can pull off, and it’s delightful from beginning to end.” –Annie Wagner, THE STRANGER

Yulefest at Nordic Museum in “Ballard”

Isn't Yulefest that scandinavian holiday where everybody is trying to get rid of his or her junk by wrapping it in gift paper and exchange it with other people that are trying to do the same? Or am I confusing it with that Nordic tradition of eating lutefisk and drinking booze until somebody drowns in his own lutefisk-vodka vomit?

Either way - sounds like another family fun in event in "Ballard"!

Laibach @ Neumo's

I have been to two Laibach shows in Germany. That was about twenty years ago and they still seem to be in business. I have no idea what they are doing in these days. At that time they where putting on an impressive Nazi show that could compete with the Reichsparteitag. They are of course not Nazis. They just wanted to shock people. If that was true they probably picked the wrong country when they were marching on German stages twenty years ago. Germany invented the Third Reich and learned from it. For example it does not invade other countries for economic reasons anymore. It became a cultural value: Don't start wars with other countries. I remember a very popular flyer during the Gulf War that showed a young German soldier, who was eager to join the army. The subtitle said: "I would love to die for cheap gas!"

Maybe this time Laibach is coming at the right time to the United States of Ameica.

Vintage Bicycle Show at Magnuson Park.

Seattle Spin writes:

Vintage Bicycle Show hosted by Elliot Bay Bicycles, at the Sand Point Activity Center in the Viewridge Room at Magnuson Park, Nov 21st starting at 9 AM, $5 to attend. That old beater strewn about on the garage floor gathering cobwebs may actually have some life in it after attending this show. View old bicycles and then join the group for a ride.
