Events for 11/12 to 11/18/2004

This doesn’t look like the busiest party week of the year. My favorite is probably the White Elephant Sale at the Wallingford Community Senior Center Bazaar. Although I am a big supporter of Vital 5 (Dead Girls Benefit) and Roq La Rue is also high on my list.

Also, on Saturday the Three Imaginary Girls, The Stranger, and 89.9 FM KGRG Local Motion present IQU, the Lights, and Anna Oxygen at the Paradox. It’s a free show but I couldn’t figure out any more details. I would check at http://threeimaginarygirls.com/ ...

POP SURREALISM @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue Gallery presents
The Pin Up Show
group show
featuring

Kirsten Easthope, Lisa Petrucci, Jason Nelson, Nicole Steen,
Lynne Naylor, Michiko, Miles Thompson, Erin Norlin, Joe Chiodo, Heather Watts.

And the “Pop Surrealism” book release party!

Opens SATURDAY November 13th 2004 6-10pm <---note, Saturday not Friday
Ends December 4th

Modern Pin Up Art , meaning the scantily clad depictions of female pulchritude, can be traced back to the close of the 19th Century, when the staunch Victorian era morals of the time started to weaken. At this time everything from calendars to magazines to posters (a newly evolving art form at the time) began to realize they could captivate viewers with illustrations of beautiful carefree women (such as the Gibson Girl, considered provocative at the time, or Toulouse-Lautrec’s Demi Monde beauties)

The real Golden Age of Pin Up art however, was in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, when sassy ladies in revealing ensembles (sometimes nothing but a strategically placed slip of cloth and a big smile) really hit their stride, and these gals graced everything from lurid pulp magazines to the nose cones of bombers during World War 2.

In the mid nineties a new wave of interest of vintage pi! n up art occurred, fueled by the retro “cocktail culture” resurgence, and the rediscovery of Pin Up goddess Bettie Page, whose iconic black hair, bright smile, and racy bondage photographs were inspiring to almost all the current countercultural scenes, from Rockabilly to S&M, and directly influenced the burgeoning burlesque scene. New artists started experimenting with the subject and a new wave of alternative Pin Up art was born.

“Pop Surrealism” is the first comprehensive survey of the Lowbrow/Pop Surrealism art movement. The book profiles the work of 24 artists and contains essays by Robert Williams, Carlo McCormick, and Robert Williams. Edited by Kirsten Anderson (of Roq la Rue!)

The Pin Up Show features some of the best artists working in the genre. Don’t miss our opening party! Music from the Fraus, and DJ Johnny Hotrod. Cheesecake and refreshing beverages will be served. Later that night the Viceroy will be serving drinks at Happy Hour prices for all Pin Up attendees!

Vital 5 hosts DEAD GIRLS Benefit

I am glad to hear that Vital 5 is planning new productions and shows. I have to admit that I miss Vital 5's opening and weird shows. This benefit has my full support:

Dear Friends,

On February 5, 2005, Vital 5 Productions will team up with Priceless
Works Gallery to host a the one evening performance-installation, DEAD
GIRLS by Seatle artist Nicole Grant. In six captivating tableau's, Ms.
Grant will present the preciousness of youth and the inherent beauty of
death, placed amongst our social obsession with tragedy.

On November 13, 2004, Vital 5 Productions would like to invite you to a
fundraising event for Ms. Grant to help fund DEAD GIRLS and insure the
uncompromised scope of her vision. From 9:00pm-2:00am, Saturday,
November 13, we will host a party in the VIP room at the Bad Juju lounge
(1518 - 11th Avenue, Capital Hill). The lovely DJ Super Jew will be on
the turntables for a smashing fall party. A suggested donation of $10.
is requested at the door (VIP entrance in the back, enter through main
front door) and each donor will recieve a rare snapshot of DEAD GIRLS in
the making. Space is limited and RSVP's are encouraged.

Windstorms of the Pacific Northwest

I am glad, Adam (Advance Kitesurf) is poiting out this event:

hiya PV,

Here is an event for you, in case you are interested in breaking
windstorms -- this is a topic I love, being kooky kitesurfer that thinks the US
stinks of bushit right now:

Cliff Mass of the UW dept of atmospheric sciences is giving a lecture on
wind storms of the Pac-NW.

It is free, Nov 15 at UW Kane Hall.
To sign up.... http://www.atmos.washington.edu/Masslecture.html
Unfortunately I will be in SF at this time

av

It does sound interesting:

Although the Northwest escapes tropical cyclones and hurricanes, it is often visited by storms of equal strength. Some come off the Pacific, while others are produced by the substantial mountains of our region. This talk will tell about the history of the great Northwest windstorms, explain their origin, and review our increasing skill in forecasting them.

Monday, November 15, 2004
7:30 PM, Room 130 Kane Hall
Special Introduction by Jeff Renner, Chief Meteorologist for weeknight KING 5 News.

Cold Lava

Camper Van Beethoven @ Crocodile (11/6/2004)

From Gates:

Went to see Camper Van Beethoven do their thing at the Croc saturday
night with the Radio Nationals opening. Sucked up a few packs of
second hand smoke... I'm not against smoking in clubs, but how about a
little ventilation? I'm sure low budget clubs like the Croc don't even
meet the city's basic requirements for ventilation, let alone what is
needed in a club where hundreds of smokers pack together like sickly
dogs. Maybe management ought to spend a little of that lucrative booze
profit on a exhaust fan or twelve.

And why is it that when people open a live music venue they pick spaces
with posts in front of the stage? Take the Crocodile for example.
Post right the fuck in the middle of the view to the stage. And not
just one, but two! Back when Gates was an undergrad in a college town,
there was a live music club called the Filling Station that had - you
guessed it - a post right in front of the stage.

And whats with the yuppie jam band crowd - you know, the button down
shirt wearing, probably from down south short haired expensive watch
guys? And their bleached blonde drunker than fuck psuedo hippy chick
dancing dates. I guess Camper Van is from North Carolina, technically
the south (one of those RED states). I get the feeling these folks
haven't heard any new music since "take the skinheads bowling". One
randy gal was pressing her ass into her dates crotch right in front of
use, using the post in front of her for leverage. She was really
getting into groping that post, and of course kept pushing her drunk
dream date into our group while he's grabbing her ass. You know, this
is what mosh pits are for. If you want audience contact, get up front
and get your ass grabbed all you want. Gates bodyguard finally had to
ask the dumbass if he realized there were people standing behind him.!
To his credit, he seemed to take the advice to heart.
The band was pretty good considering they had all new gear (their
instruments were all stolen a few weeks ago in Montrial) a bit too much
of the jammy thing though.
But the crowd really ruined it for Gates. Shoulda hit the Showbox for
the Faint/TV on the Radio. I'm sure the crowd there was more of the
Cha Cha lounge variety of annoying, which have much better wardrobes
than southern post college stockbroker good ol' boys.
