IRON COMPOSER - "REGIME CHANGE"

Seattle School presents:
IRON COMPOSER - "REGIME CHANGE"
The Popular Real Time Live Songwriting Competition, Drinking Game, and Aural Obstacle Course

WHEN: Friday, Nov 26th, 2004 - Doors at 8pm, Opening act at 8:30pm, Show/Competition at 9pm
WHERE: The Crocodile Cafe, 2200 2nd Ave, Seattle, WA (206) 441-5611
ADMISSION: $8 at the door.
Advanced tickets may be bought at Ticket Web www.ticketweb.com

Seattle, WA - IRON COMPOSER continues it's popular monthly run at the Crocodile on Friday Nov 26th, with a musical battle royale between Brent Amaker of Dorkweed and guitar god Ian Moore. The November IC show has an overwhelming number of insurance-nightmare scenarios for audience participation, and includes an election by the audience in an opportunity to vote for new members of the Songwriting Stadium staff. Positions up for elections include: The Chairman, The Interloper, The Cheerleader and The Cop.

Celebrity judges will be Q13 Fox Sportscaster Dan Devone; host of 107.7 FM The End's Morning Alternative DJ No Name; and playwright, director, & theater critic for The Stranger Bret Fetzer. Opening act is The Xenophiles, and post show entertainment provided by Batum Schrag. For the competition, one audience member, randomly chosen as the "secret ingredient," gushes about his or her current state of affairs (or nefarious past) in a five-minute interview. Each composer draws inspiration from the personal these life-details and incorporates those into an original song to be performed at the end of the bout.

Think it's that easy? This 45-minute competition is divided into five nine-minute segments. Each segment contains a "Mystery Chaos," performed by The Interloper (Korby Sears of Seattle School) which distracts the composers. As added molasses, each composer drinks a shot of liquor at the beginning of each round, consuming five shots in the course of 45 minutes. Each composer is equipped with "musical kitchens" contaning: one guitar, one piano, paper and pencil and one Sous Chef Line Musician. The Sous Chef conducts live rehearsals with the house band on stage, and composers can only communicate with the band via their Sous Chef. Now that's what we call confounding! Yahear?

Globalista @ Mirabeau Room

This will be a good show!

Join us this Saturday at Globalista at the Mirabeau Room for a live set of some Post Modern Global Beats by Grey Filastine.
Grey just finished a tour with Morocco’s U-Cef and Lebanese Hip hop star Clotaire K. Not to be missed.

You may have seen Filastine playing drums with the Infernal Noise
Brigade, you may have seen him crash into the Capitol Hill block party
with a soundsystem mounted on a ruined El Camino, you may have seen his
work with ¡tchkung!, you may have seen him at his weekly thursdays last
summer at LoFi, you may have seen him attacking media outlets with
loudspeakers, but you have never seen Filastine in such a swanky
upscale joint as the Mirabeau Room. The sound there is topnotch, and
it's run by excellent people, it should be a good night.
Go to: www.postworldindustries.com to hear a Filastine track or
mix. Also a new vinyl release here: www.negrophonic.com

What: Globalista
Where: The Mirabeau Room. 529 Queen Anne
When: Saturday. 11-27-04
Who: Grey Filastine (Post World Industries)
Darek Mazzone (KEXP, Planet Beat)

Gist: Modern Global Beats from all over world.

Broke Ass Saturday @ Mars Bar

Don writes:

Hey Party Volcano,

This Saturday at the Mars Bar I'm continuing to host the alt-country Broke
Ass Saturday.

This time is titled Oregon invades Mars(bar), which is two bands from the
far away and dreamy land of "Oregon"(yeh, I know where it is).
The bands are Ordinary Flies and Joshua James and the Runaway Trains.
One of the guys in the Flies plays a freakin' SAW, I kid you not. Maybe
after he would cut some 2X4's, but you got to bring 'em.
Joshua James is kind of rockabilly country. Should be fun, and remember, PBR
is $1, Frito Pies $3, and cover is $5.

I'm no mathmetician, (but I do play one at home, naughty mathmetician, that
is, but, really another story), but for $10 you get admission, two beers and
a Frito pie. Beat that shit, I defy you!
Bring your broke asses on down.
Don from Scattergun

I guess, this is a good deal for some of us. Well, I can't drink PBR. Broke ass or unbroken ass: I don't think you can consider that beer.

SWEATBAND @ THE MARCO POLO

Ruby writes:

HI.

Sweatband is going to play a show this coming
Saturday, November 27th. The show will be taking place
at the newish Marco Polo in Georgetown.

Why not work off that turkey coma in a sweat-drenched
beer-fueled euphoria? Why not go somewhere new in a
part of town you didn't even remember existed?

It's still unclear who else will be playing with us or
how much it costs, but as always, I am sure you will
get more rock than you pay for. You will be fully
entertained and amazed at our latest songs.

For example, have you ever heard of Pasta Rat? A well
loved denizen of the Pioneer Square crowd, Pasta Rat
has been terrorizing back alleys and kitchen cupboards
since the late 40's here in Seattle. Quincy Jones lost
his virginity in an apartment Pasta Rat used to share
with Ray Charles!

We also have a new song called "Get It". We also might
play "I Grew a Third Skull" if we're feelin' it.
(You'd be lucky to see that one.) We might even
premiere "The Grip" if any of our fans "get it" and
"give some to us". You know what I mean! I know you
do! Too bad this is being monitored by spy satellites,
or we could drop the semantics.

Anyway, just come. We'd really love it if you did.
And Happy Thanksgiving.

EN MASSE @ CHAC

I am afraid I have to downgrade this one:

LOWER LEVEL GALLERY DECEMBER ART EXHIBITION:
EN MASSE: A meditation on spatial and emotional relationships
Capitol Hill Arts Center (CHAC), in association with Static Factory
Media, is proud to present its next show in a series of monthly
exhibitions: EN MASSE.

En Masse is a meditation on spatial and emotional relationships in the
contemporary urban landscape. Digital photography and graphic design
meld icon and environment to evoke a visceral sense of place,
atmosphere, psychological tone, and experience. Driven by a parallel
aesthetic and vision, photographer Roseann Barnhill and graphic artist
Luara Moore have incorporated the formal vocabulary of design and the
experimental nature of collage in 17 large-format inkjet prints. A new
and distinct style for both artists has emerged through this
collaborative process.

The language of the invitation tells me that the art will be crappy. Art-gibberish like “meditation on spatial and emotional relationships in the contemporary urban landscape” is a red flag to me. Good art doesn’t need pseudo-intellectual support (see Milky for a positive example). Like a good fugue written by Bach art just works or it doesn’t. So let me rewrite this invitation in words that might have been more appropriatly matching the quality of the art that you should expect:

Please come to my opening on Thursday. I am showing collages of pictures that I have taken last month and I hope you’ll like them.

CHAC Lower Level Hours: Monday—Sunday, 6pm—2am. 21+ ID Required. DOWN
THE RAMP! at 1621 – 12th Ave. Bar number: 206.388.0521. Work from En
Masse may be also seen at
www.staticfactory.org/galleryspace.

Milky @ Gallery 110

As mentioned above (I am still not done with my EN MASSE downgrade) in my opinion good art just works. This opening fits that category.

Hey All,

I’m finally having a show of Milky, which I’ve been working on for almost a year.
I hope you can make it down on one of the three dates listed on the following invite.

Ciao
Steven

The idea is pretty simple but the outcome works. He essentially poured milk over his friends and took pictures of them. The effects are magnified by using black and white film. I saw one of his Milky photos on a fridge at a birthday party this year and I liked it. It turns out that my friend, who was on that picture, got in trouble with her boyfriend at that time for agreeing to model for Steven. According to her boyfriend Steven abused and kind of “raped” her by taking a picture of her with milk running down her face. What an odd thought and what a weirdo – but I definitely liked that Steven got somebody angry with his photos.

I am highly recommending this opening. Please have a look at the flyer.

If you are into competitive Butoh you don't want to miss this one:

"my mother my father"
a theater installation by dk pan
in collaboration with inphase prod & chris engman

The SOIL Art Gallery will be turned into a theater for the duration of
December by artist dk pan. The project entitled, "my mother my father"
is about the bridging of dichotomies and pursuing the personal as source
of meaning. Combining the black box theater with the white cube
gallery, dk designs a 'white box' theater incorporating materials such
as salt and rice, setting the stage for works on video by the artists
listed below, as well as three weekends of performances including
butoh, dance, theater, and poetry. Each one of the artists expresses
the personal as they explore their own relationship to the mother /

THE BUTTROCK VS. NEW WAVE KARAOKE PARTY @ CHOP SUEY

The Three Imaginary Girls write:

Ho ho ho! 'Tis the time to kick off the holiday season imaginarily! ‘Three Imaginary Girls’ presents the Buttrock vs. New Wave Rockstar Karaoke Holiday Bash.

ThreeImaginaryGirls.com, "Seattle's sparkly indie-pop press," will host the Holiday Karaoke Bash on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at Chop Suey, to welcome in the holiday season with Motley Crüe, Missing Persons, and mistletoe.

The night will feature rockstar performances by local musicians and celebrities. Members of the Divorce, the Fitness, Hypatia Lake, Harvey Danger, the Fastbacks, Dolour, the Catch, the Ruby Doe, Kane Hodder, the Jeunes, Aqueduct, Iron Composer, Graig Markel, Black Nite Crash, Lila, Argo, the Femurs, the Senate Arcade, and more are prepared to take the stage and rock your mulleted/Aquanet'd head off.

Of course – in imaginary style – you won't need mistletoe to get lucky. The event will feature raffles, John Roderick of the Long Winters as Santa Claus, and dangerous drink specials.

"How often does one get the chance to have her picture taken while sitting on John Roderick's lap?" asked imaginary girl Liz. "That's reason enough to attend!"

"Know what I want for Christmas this year? I hope someone sings a Haircut 100 song! That would be the best imaginary gift ever," said imaginary girl Dana.

Steve the Karaoke King (of Twilight Exit, Molly McGuires, and the Comet Tavern fame) will serve as KJ for the big event, which means the song selection and the sound system will both be incredible. Need further incentive? Imaginary Karaoke parties always tend to attract surprise guests, including Vendetta Red's Zach Davidson, the Posies' Jon Auer, and the Vells' Tristian Marcum. Merry Christmas to you, indie-music fan!

Cold Lava Report

THE GOSSIP @ Northwest Film Forum (11/19/2004)

We have received mixed reviews about the NW Film Forum party last Friday:

We also went to the opening of the NSK Show at
the NW Film Forum, which we thought was really well
done. A guy named Gary from Capro Nason Gallery in
LA (who was up to see the Ryden exhibit) brushed up
against one of Charlie Kraft's bone china plates and
it smashed to the ground.
No comment from Mr. Kraft.

We have also heard that the “snack situation” was excellent. That’s all we care about. They might still do their weird Nazi thing (their motto seems to be: we are against governments so let’s create our own Nazi regime so it may become obvious to the public how ridiculous they are). But being able to do the same shit over 20 years proves something I guess.

Anyways, good snacks, money was involved, an ambassador held a speech in broken English, and a plate with food fell to ground. Sounds like it was a great event!

Mark Ryden Wondertoonel After-Party (11/20/2004)

The Party Volcano Lab wasn’t invited to slurp cocktail with Mark Ryden even though we love his work. But at least some our readers received the honor of getting a VIP pass. Here is a Cold Lava report from the after-party:

Dear Party Volcano,

Maybe you were at the opening Thursday nite, but I didn't see you. We had talked about Ryden's work last time I saw you at Roq la Rue. The show was so fabulous! And Kristen did a nice lecture on his work. After the event, Mark had a private party in the Penthouse of the Sorrento Hotel where he gathered with his L.A. entourage and other friends and family. (I know you love the Cold Lava reports....) The food was a posh spread of smoked salmon and other delights, with a full-bar. Don't use my name, I don't want anyone to know what an Art Slut I am! (Ha!)

Guerrilla Masquerade Party Stocking Stuffers

I thought you might find this amuzing as I did:

Happy Holidays, Guerrillas!

With Thanksgiving upon us, and Xmas/Hanukhah/Winter Solstice/Kwanzaa
right around the corner, we thought we'd put together a list of gift
ideas for the freaks on your list. Check out these fun items, and
stay tuned for information on an upcoming event -- coming to your
inbox soon.

LIVEWRONG BRACELETS - $2-4 on Ebay
The perfect stocking stuffer for 2004, this black rubber bracelet
features the slogan "LIVEWRONG". The designer created them as both
a parody of the yellow Lance Armstrong "LIVESTRONG" bracelets and a
reminder to live a fun, non-conformist existence. Currently sported
by Ruby Doe drummer, Joshua Gabriel, and GMP founder Dirty Bunny.
http://stores.ebay.com/LIVEWRONG/

BUNNY OF THE MONTH CLUB - $35/month from MorbidTendencies.com
Local taxidermy artist Cat Grey will create one of a kind stuffed
animal monstrosities and mail them direct to your loved ones
every month.

EVIL CLOWN NESTING DOLLS - $9.95 at Archie McPhee
As anyone who's spent some time around the Temple of Necronomiclown
knows, Clowns can turn on you -- and it's not pretty. These Clown
Nesting Dolls reveal the descent into pure EVIL that occurs when you
get a clown really drunk.
http://www.mcphee.com/amusements/current/11212.html

ADOPT A COCKROACH - $25 from the Woodland Park Zoo
Who wouldn't love to reach into their stocking and pull out a
Brazilian Giant Cockroach? Pretty much everyone, I suppose -- which
makes this adoption program a much better option. You adopt an
animal in someone's name, and they get an adoption certificate,
window cling, and info on the animal. And you can adopt cuddly
animals, too... like Hippopotamus and Komodo Dragons.
http://www.wpzs-ecommerce.org/adoptions.htm

RABBIT WITH POINTY TEETH - $22 at Urban Outfitters
This stuffed bunny, inspired by Monty Python's 'Holy Grail' film,
transforms from cute and cuddly white bunny to fanged beast -- not
unlike Dirty Bunny when you take his bourbon away.
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=5901&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=5901

PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL - $11.24 from Amazon.com
The single greatest Christmas special ever created, finally released
on DVD. The long list of celebrity cameos alone is enough to make
you want a copy to show at your holiday parties, but it's Pee Wee
(and the sailor who grabs his ass in the opening dance number) that
makes it great.

GIFT CERTIFICATES TO COSTUME SHOPS
As good as cash at Display & Costume Supply, Champion Party Supply,
and other costume shops, this is a perfect gift idea for someone you
know who loves to dress up -- whether they're a fellow Guerrilla, a
Burlesque dancer, a Drag Queen, or just a creative neice or nephew.

*GMP has received no reparations for these product endorsements --
we just think they're super neat and thought you might, too.
