The party is a benefit for the Friday night dance group at the VFW, which will receive 100% of the proceeds -- we're playing for free. Admission is $10 adults, $5 students. There'll be a table for potluck goodies, so feel free to brinng something tasty to share. If you haven't been out dancing in a while, take this opportunity to show your support!

Susan Robb's Studio Sale.

I already have Susan's Seedling and half of her Urine Tower in my garage, even though I don't own them. I will probably not acquire the other half of Urine Tower (glasses filled with urine from Burning Man people). But this is probably my best chance for getting other excellent art from one of the most talented artists I know. I don't know what exactly will be up for sale but she said it'll be "good stuff" and it will be cheap.

Sat. Nov. 23rd and Sun. Nov. 24th, 1pm - 6pm.

Meghan Trainor's Holidays Opening in NYC.

Meghan Trainor is still alive!

I will have art works at the following more or less holiday themed shows: new paintings and old sculpture. The paintings are very recent, having been completed in the last few months in my Brooklyn apartment in South Williamsburg, executed on small aluminum sheets reminiscent of old cigarette signs, with imagery that conjures up early 20th century advertising but often deals thematically with emerging technology. I plan to continue this series and offer them for sale on the streets of Soho next spring, along with a few other former Seattleite artists, where apparently New York City allows artists to sell without the usual exorbitant permit fees.

Life must be difficult in New York City. In an earlier email I learned from her about the "New York City Avocado Index":

The avacado index: i have found in newyork your ability to live in a given 'hood is tied to the price of avacados.

Park Avenue: $2.49
East Village: $1.99
Williamsburgh yuppie markets: $1.49
Williamsburgh bodegas: $.99
South Williamsburgh: $.79

Meghan will also have some openings coming up in Seattle in December. We will keep you posted.

RITUAL - Concert at Town Hall.

For those of you who love tango and Latin music, this sounds like a wonderful concert. It’s not cheap--$23—but it’s easy to spend that much on drinks on a regular night rubbing elbows with unsavory people you wouldn’t want to bbring home to mother:

We want you to know about a very special concert called RITUAL which plays one night only Saturday, November 23rd at 7:30pm in the Great Hall of Town Hall in Seattle. Matt Messina, the composer/conductor, just released his new CD of this music and presents the concert as his 5th annual fundraiser for the Childrens' Hospital Foundation.

The RITUAL concert will feature a wonderfully eclectic combination of Latin music & traditions. For more information, go to www.mattmessina.com - RITUAL- and read more about this exciting concert plus a listing of featured artists: Children of the Revolution & Artis the Spoonman, along with Matt Messina and his orchestra. Kevin Rossio and myself are honored to be dancing some solo Argentine Tango and will also be joined by other tango friends...

Speaking of the value of concerts to act as social "filters," it's unlikely that the Children of the Revolution will get into a fight with members of the Infernal Noise Brigade at this Tango concert as they did at some tree-hogging/fire-spinning hippie event we recommended a few months ago. I've been told that in these times of recession and mass layoffs, now you need to *pay* the INB for showing up and crashing your party (see ¡TchKunG! concert at I-Spy on
11/2/02).

But there's still hope that all that money won't corrupt those lovely and intelligent bastards. Perhaps our anarchists-for-hire will be feeling philanthropic this Saturday and will spark a no-charge, spankin'-good pew-clearing brawl at the Tango concert. If not for the INB, who else in this town would remind us that "political theories are important - otherwise your fist wouldn't know who it should hit?" Not that we have anything against those who attend Tango concerts, but who was it who said that in order to make an omelet, you gotta crack a few eggs?

The Great Hall of Town Hall is at 1119 Eighth Ave, Seattle - directions at www.townhallseattle.org. It's a beautiful church converted to concert hall with high ceilings & great acoustics; as the original pews are still in, the seating is festival. Tickets - $23 - call 206.325.0920 or go to www.mattmessina.com

Andrzejki - Polish House Party in "Ballard".

This unusual party invitation came in via SeattleRaves:

This is an anything-goes Polish house party!! Bring whatever gets you off - sex or trip toys, etc.

The Seattle Polish community is celebrating Andrzejki, a traditional pagan holiday similar to Mardi Gras by inviting all Slavic peoples for an all ages party. All of the money raised will help 19 year old Agnieszka Marczak battle cancer; The entrance donation also entitles you to consume a traditional hot Polish meal (if you arrive between 7:30 & 10 pm);

Freely drink your own alcohol (bringing your own makes this a
cheaper party than going out to a bar); Interact with influential, intellectual and sexy Polish, Russian and other Slavic peoples ages 16 to 60;

Dance to disco, house, hip-hop, Latin and other types of electronic dance music sung in Polish, Russian, Spanish and English spun by DJ Y;

2812 NW Market St, 7:30 pm - 2 am.

We, at Party Volcano, dug up a delicious party for you this coming Saturday Nov 23. It's the Membership Meeting for The Emerald City Society for the Preservation of Wigs!!!!

ALA ZINGARA AND HIPNOTICA

You might be into this:

Ala Zingara is a musical group that plays a fusion of world
music and rock. They pull from Greek, Eastern European,
Celtic, Middle-Eastern, and Rock traditions mixed together
with a contemporary flair. The instrumentation includes
bouzouki, guitar, accordion, dumbek, djembe, drum set, and
upright bass. Their up- tempo, high energy, driving sound
makes it difficult to stay off of the dance floor. The term
ala zingara literally means, "in a gypsy style," and this
phrase is central to the band's music as they travel around
to a variety of musical genres.

Hipnotica is a new tribal belly dance troupe in the Seattle
area. Their first performance was at a benefit for the MPS
society where they were a huge success. Their improvisatory
approach to belly dancing is truly hypnotizing and is a must
see.

The Commonfire is a large functional space with a loft that
provides an alternative to the bar scene for musicians who
want to put on an original show.

Saturday 11/23, 10 p.m.
Commonfire Studio, 101 1/2 NW 36th St. $7, 21+

Art Auction/Party/Fundraiser in West Seattle.

Larry from Consolidated Works is pointing out this auction fundraiser on Sunday:

The dry facts: An art auction/party/fundraiser this Sun, Nov 24, from 4-7, at the lovely West Seattle home of Michael and Sarah Hyman, 5469 Beach Drive SW (Michael serves on the ConWorks board). There will be food and music. Link: http://www.sendomatic.com/servlets/v?e=8993&u=23633 Lost/questions: 206/933-5584.

The somewhat-hyperbolic-gently-irrevent commentary that PV always likes to flesh out its listings with: come bid on items (not just art, actually, but dinners at buzz-worthy restaurants, massages, band performance at your next party, et al) and get that smacking-anti-NEA people-upside-the-head-feeling. Imbibe liquor in late afternoon at a lovely home financed by the dot-com boom. Support Consolidated Works in its efforts to provide its curators with the funds necessary to create a brilliant winter/spring series and pay off the bulding architects that designed the space we all partied in, in August. (And will continue to, in the new year.)

Ultimately -- hang out, bid on items you can afford, meet others beyond the PV regulars (lovely as we are), and support an organization wworking its ass off in dire times to stand behind its mission statement to provide a link between the fringe and the mainstream.

Michael and Sarah Hyman, 5469 Beach Drive SW, 4-7PM, free.

Wednesday, 11/27.

DJML (Mark Lacas) - Spinning at Marcus' Martini Heaven.

It’s time once again to come down to Marcus’ Martini Heaven to partake in the musical journeys of DJML (Mark Lacas), Wednesday night (tonight) from 9pm to 1am (as mentioned on KEXP’s concert calendar this week!).

"Burning Down the House" (11/16).

Busy Party Volcano's scouts reported that some folks were getting together at a house in the Central District to celebrate "the turning of the seasons, the turning of water into wine and back into water again in honor of the lunar month of Ramadan (White Rhythmic Wind night in the Overtone Moon of Radiance)".

What a weird party! Don't get me wrong, I had a great time. I liked especially being shepherded into the small room upstairs to ensure silence and fool the police (which was trying to shut down the party at 2am), and how strange, yet pleasantly intimate that was. But I have never seen this combination of people that I would describe as "friendly but uptight and clean hippies". For example when I was trying the salmon with the other food that was served one of the uptight hosts got upset and said: "Have you asked?" The Gods, who live in the Party Volcano, were teaching me a lesson for life. Next time I go to a hippie party I'll better ask for permission before I enter the kitchen - "May I try your potato chips?"
