11 Shows in 11 Months (last show) @Aftermath.

Randy Wood is showing an installation and watercolors called Black Plastic Procession:

Visitors to the last One Night Only enter the gallery to find themselves in a "black cube". The "white cube" is turned inside out; white walls are replaced with black ones, and the watercolors showcased in this exhibit are lit not from within the space but from behind; from the outside of the cube.

Show #11 is being held at Aftermath Gallery, 928 12th Ave (about two blocks south of Madison and across the street from Seattle University)

Trademark at Area 51

Randy Woods is pointing out this event:

Trademark at Area 51, 401 E Pine, has an opening this night. The show runs through Jan 3rd. This is a show curated by Chuck Dong of "Softcore" fame and features some of my favorite artists, including Flatchestedmama, Sam Trout, Matthew Parker, and Rachel Peacock.

Area 51, 401 E Pine.

Challenge v2.0 @Forgotten Works.

Dave S. writes:

Have you heard about the Forgotten Works Challenge v2.0? The Forgotten Works Gallery has challenged local artists to produce 30 separate pieces(each) in 30 days. Apparently, 47 artists have taken the challenge. This Thursday, all of the art (1400+ pieces!) will be on display and for sale at the Forgotten Works Gallery, 619 Western Ave. 4th floor. Every piece will be bargain priced at $35! (You could find the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for loved one!) The doors open at 5:00pm. I'm going to try to get there early so as to have the pick of the litter.

Sold Gold Angela adds:

We went last year (you may have seen the gun painting DK picked up) and it was really fun. You can imagine how much bad art there was but there was some pretty good stuff, too. We did not get there as early as we had planned and regretted it, there was a lot gone by the time we showed up (about a half hour late, I think) and there was some pretty good stuff walking around in peoples hands. So do get there early.

Forgotten Works Gallery, 619 Western Ave. 4th floor, 5pm.

Blue Velvet Night @ Easy Street Records in West Seattle.

From an email:

Just a quick reminder that this thursday, dec. 5 is the latest blue velvet nights at the lovely easy street records in west seattle. the line-up once again features an astonishing list of tremendously talented folks, who will all be performing short sets. things kick off at 9, cover is a measly $5 and it's 21+ due to the fact that you can purchase beer and wine.

This week: gerald collier, andrew mckeag (shuggie), robb benson (dear john letters), sean bates (firebrat), barton carroll and members of purty mouth - seattle's premier almost all-gay country band (featuring my esteemed former roommate kurt b. reighley!)

Easy Street Records, 4559 California Ave. SW, 9pm, $5.

URSULA 1000 @Baltic Room.

I have heard good things about this DJ. This is what the Stranger writes about Ursula 1000 in this week's issue:

New York-based Ursula 1000 produces music that would work for Esquivel if he were being chased through a nightclub in a Bond film: "Hammond organ breaks, spy caper intrigue, boogaloo shingalings, samba disco and bongos, bongos, bongos." Just what in the hell is a boogaloo shingaling, anyway? Michael Antonio and A. C. Lewis support.

You'll find a little bit more about Ursula 1000 in the Seattle Weekly from 7/25/02(http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0230/two-reighley.shtml) .

Baltic Room, 1207 Pine St, 9 pm-2 am, 625-4444, 21+, $7.

Bolly Nasha @ Watertown.

After "Bombay to Goa" Chaya Benefit Nights at I-Spy and "I (heart) Shiva" at Baltic Room on Mondays yet another dance club has decided to establish an evening dedicated to Indian dance music:

Starting the 21st of November and from thereon every Thursday we will bring to you the best beats in Indian music, from Balle Balle to Shava Shava!!!! , from Mehbooba to Sharara!!!! , it is all going to be there so put your party hats on and get set to bring the FREAKIN HOUSE DOWN !!!! So come on over and experience the best Indian night in town with DJ Anshul and the rest of the gang.

It may become as popular as those Chaya Benefit Nights. You will know if it's happening at Watertown when you start seeing Indians arguing and getting into fights about Indian music (like it has happened twice at those Chaya Benefit Nights). The cheap drink specials are definitely supporting this kind of activity.

Location: Watertown 106 1st Ave N, Seattle
When: Thursday, November 21,10:00pm

"Gods and Monsters" @Roq La Rue.

Roq La Rue presents "Gods and Monsters" - A Holiday Ode To The Supernatual:

Roq la Rue is pleased to present a group show, "Gods and Monsters" for it’s Dec-Jan show. Artists from Seattle and around the country were given the theme and told to run with it, creating work that ranges from the spiritual and sublime to the campy and creepy. Bear in mind this is a Roq la Rue show- all the work is top- notch and inspired, but may be considered a bit racy for some.

Drop Grandma off and head over to the opening! Many artists will be in attendance. Snax/liquids.

I hope R' la R' is serious about the snacks and liquids part. I have never seen anything eatable or drinkable at Roq La Rue (accept for what they sometimes hung on their walls) since they moved to the new location. The biggest names on the list of artists for this show are probably Mark Ryden (meat show), Shag (Tiki), and Jim Blanchard (stickers).

Randy Wood's Nepotism @Aftermath.

Aftermath is having two events in December: The first is on first Thursday and features a solo, "One Night Only" show by Randy Wood. The second is their December art show, "Nepotism":

Nepotism is commonly understood to mean preference of any sort given to relatives and this show features a wide range of talent. The curator says, "My sister makes cute, deformed mechanical dolls out of metal and my aunt Babe's slightly-too-bright landscapes make even Bob Ross' paintings seem depressing." Adding, "Hey, it's my gallery, I can do whatever I want".

Aftermath Gallery, 928 12th Ave, 7-10 pm. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=seattle.jpg http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=2headedgirl_05.jpg http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=2hats_250.jpg

CROWD CONTROL @SAW.

Secluded Alley Works Proudly Presents:

CROWD CONTROL.

expressive and narrative acrylic paintings by Ursula Gullow dealing with the abstraction of the individual within a crowd, and the social forces used to control large numbers of people.

Using a vibrant palette and distinct brushwork, Ursula explores the social forces used to control crowds, the abstraction of individuals within them, and the crowd as a living entity. A plethora of colors, patterns, and faces abound in this collection of paintings which tell the stories of a billion people.

Artist's reception: Friday December 6: 7pm-11pm.
SAW, 113 12th Ave (between Fir and Yesler)

OFF THE PAGE: 3 DIMENSIONAL NARRATIVES @ SOIL.

Press release:

We invited some of our favorite artists to create a pictorial narrative that would convey a story (however they chose to interpret that) in 3 dimensions. We wanted to see work that would tell a story in a way that couldn't be conveyed on the pages of book; that created a new way of looking at a pictorial narrative. The result is an eclectic show of works by over 20 artists, including installations, motorized sculptures, and toys.

SOIL, 1317 E Pine St. Friday, 12/6, 7-10pm. Free, all ages.

Charles Peterson's Photography Studio Sale

We have three words for this: Go And See. This is some of the best photography that you are likely to see in Seattle.

Charles Peterson came to fame in the late 80's and early 90's photographing the nascent Seattle grunge music scene. His use of blurred motion in the black and white pix of moshing fans and hair flipping grunge rockers captured the angry, vital energy of those early shows. Most of his current work centers on SE Asia and in tone and technique is nearly the opposite of his earlier fast moving grunge pix: SE Asia as contemplative, as quiet bursts of brilliant color, as portraits of people whose visages open out to the viewer. PV knows from extensive personal experience in SE Asia, that Peterson is onto something at the core, some essence, of this place. Subtle, moving, gorgeous.

Opening Party: Friday, 12/6, 7pm to 11pm.
Hours: Saturday, 12/7, Noon to 7pm. Sunday, 12/8, Noon to 5pm. After that by appointment until 12/23
Address: 6307 24th Ave NW (in Ballard). Phone: (206) 310-2868

Guerilla Postering with Robbie Conal

Sarah (obsessive sewing objects) is pointing out an unusual event. Guerilla artist Robbie Conal is putting up some posters. Here are the details:

Hey all! The postering is happening! Robbie is in town! Come do it to it this Friday night!

Rumsfeld and Cheney as Doctor Evil and Mini-me… Bill "Anti-Trust Me" Gates… Kenneth Starr Fucker… Here's your chance to work with the infamous L.A. guerilla artist, Robbie Conal!

Come prepared to shake shit up, do your part for the anti-war movement, flaunt your right to the first amendment, and have a gay old time with the lift on the Seattle poster ban.

Bring yourself, friends and a car. Wear clothes you don't mind getting glue on, and pack some tunes for a night of mischief and mayhem. Contrary to previous rumors, no illegal activity is required.

This summer I was putting up silly posters about missing Bonsai Kittens and Stimpy's fart while Seattle's poster ban was still in effect. I felt that the vague prospect of receiving $500 was worth the risk of being caught and deported from this wonderful country. As an "old school poster rebel" I am wondering: without poster ban what's the connection to guerilla art? On the other hand in these days even local anarchists are getting paid for crashing concerts and expensive art openings.

Meet at: Stella's Pizza and Ale in Georgetown
5511-13 Airport Way South, 8 pm.
Any questions call Sarah 206-992-4349.

Santarchy in Seattle.

Last year around this time of the year I met some friends at the Alibi Room when a big group of loud and obnoxious Santas was entering the scene and started harassing guests. I was impressed. They were rude and funny at the same time. Some of them were naughty elfs. I remember one of them being dressed as a Christmas present. After about twenty minutes the Santa gang decided to move on so the people at the Alibi Room could continue their dull evening.

If you would like to be one of them this year try to meet up with them at Westlake Plaza (5:30pm) or NiteLite (7pm). But don't forget:

You MUST be dressed like Santa or associated whatever (elf, reindeer, etc.). No civilians allowed. WOT!?! Self-imposed rules? Respectfully, do think again. Santa needs some non-red people to seed the crowd and help rouse the rabble. These can be very useful when Santa wants to pour beer down a 'stranger's throat, engage in extreme interpersonal contact with the public, and have someone to stealthily watch behind doors and around corners, in case the Blue People come.. and pleez do not tell me you'd send the easterbunny home!

Here is the schedule:

5:30 p.m.; Westlake Plaza, under the arch; Free, all ages.

We'll serenade shoppers in the retail core before joining our less-musical brethren and sistren for a little liquid Yuletide cheer around 7:00. Songbooks provided. Email your wacky carols (for inclusion in the songbook) to nic@oz.net.

And then....

7 p.m.; NiteLite; 21+, bring bux for booz.

You know the drill. Dress like Santa, Santette, a reindeer, or an elf. Drink. Take pictures. Post them to web sites. Admire all the red eyed and/or blurry santas. Repeat.

John Feodorov's Myths and Prophesies @Howard House.

Press release:

Taking consumer objects like toys and games, Feodorov poses these objects in Native American guise but forms that are influenced by medieval European art, like angles. The Totem Teddy, "pits Navajo traditions against consumer society, throwing in some humor for good measure. Today’s stuffed teddy bear is a far cry from the majestic animal that is its source, and Feodorov restores some of the bear’s power to it, so to speak, by turning a series of teddy bears into totems."

Howard House Contemporary Art, 2017 Second Avenue.
Opening Reception SATURDAY, December 7, 2002, 6 - 8 pm
