Events for 12/3 to 12/9/2004

I didn't have much time for adding comments this week. This is just the plain list. I got caught up in some research about Siberia’s "Operation Fir Tree" in 2003:

"Operation Fir Tree" has been launched to protect the region's forests, reports the Ria Novosti news agency. Siberia's chief tree specialist, Nina Markovahas, told the agency that the trees had been treated with a special anti-theft solution.

The chemical is odourless when cold but will emit an unbearable smell if the trees are placed in a warm room. Siberian fir trees grow slowly - it can take up to 30 years for one to reach two metres.

Fifty police units, assisted by student environmental patrols, will be on duty round-the-clock over the holiday period to protect the city's fir trees from criminals. Checkpoints have also been set up at access points to the city. Anybody caught stealing a tree could face a year's public service and fines of $380.

I want to get that anti-theft solution!

TimeBucks pre-release party

Heard of Timebucks? "A barter system for labor of sorts" writes Gates...

Join us for a TimeBucks pre-release party!

When: This Saturday, Dec. 4 3pm
Where: Community Living Room, 3400 Phinney Ave North (Fremont)

I'll give a 5 minute (yet deep and philosophical) talk about why TimeBucks
is so important. I'll also highlight some exciting features of the new
TimeBucks site (due to be released later this month). It's a new look
with new functionality that's going to bring time-trading to a new level.
Really.

The schedule is roughly as follows:

3p networking and light refreshments
3:20p presentations
4:30p networking and light refreshments
6p end

So come and hang out for a bit. Have some munchies and tea or a glass of
wine. There's a $2 suggested donation to pay for snacks.

The event is hosted by Planetwork. They organize these forums to
highlight technology projects that create a socially just, ecologically
sane and truly democratic future--projects like TimeBucks. We may share
the spotlight with a few others who are also using technology to make the
world a better place. I hope so, it could be interesting.

You can read more about Planetwork and the event's format
at http://www.planetwork.net/networking/.

I hope to see you on Saturday. If you're planning to come by, maybe you
can let me know so I can make sure there's enough snacks in case there's a
big crowd.

See you there!

John McCool @ Retail Therapy

On Saturday December 4th we are hosting our new opening featuring the work of John McCool. I have an incredible amount of respect for his work as a young artist. Please join us for the usual festivities.

John McCool recently graduated from Western Washington University where he pursued his two interests: archaeology and the fine arts.

“Sometimes, when I see a beautiful image, I obtain great pleasure in reproducing or adapting that image. I began working from photographs as a way to practice painting in the comfort of my home. I chose photographs with obscure imagery as source material because I felt like the work was less redundant when reproducing an extant image. There is a challenge in working with a fuzzy image that kept my interest peaked. I am particularly fond of obscure or out of focus images from a visual perspective as well. For me there is a sense of tension and mystery that cannot be resolved.

This show includes drawings, sculptures and paintings from my course work as well as works completed with stolen bits of free time. This body of work is fairly diverse as I haven’t had a chance to fully focus on and resolve one particular theme. However, I feel that this work accurately reflects my personality.”

Highway 99 Benefit Show

How does that phrase go, Second time's a charm? I hope so, because I just deleted the first invitation. Well, I'm sure I have way better words to get you out of the house and into the club this time around:

December 7, 2004 Highway 99 Blues Club will be ROCKIN' as the Two-fifths team up with the Vinyl Avengers (ha) for a spectacular Benefit Show. A suggested $10 donation gets you in the door and $1 buys you a raffle ticket for the chance to win cool prizes from around town. All money raised will go to the Dream Change Coalition, a non-profit whose mission is to promote environmentally conscious business practices and buy up the Amazon Forest. All donations are tax deductable, of course.

Just picture yourself enjoying the atmoshere, laughing with all the friends you brought, winning some totally awesome prizes because you bought 300 raffle tickets, and sleeping so soundly when you finally get home because you helped tackle the "environment issue" from two sides- the ancient trees stay living and breathing, and someone is out there educating corporations about how they could have their business be successful and environmentally friendly- "Hey man, you don't have to dump that sludge into the ocean! You don't have to get those shirts made in a sweat shop by little children! You could have your business and your money too! You could... well, come to Highway 99 on Tuesday and have a great time making a difference this holiday season."

See ya there. Remember to bring yer wicked cool friends!
