Events for 1/16 to 1/22/2004

Okay, Seattle's party scene was probably not as bad at it seemed last week. I just missed a bunch of stuff. Unfortunately I did not tell you about the Big Wheel Bingo at the Rendezvous on Tuesday, which was hosted by Pastor Kaleb with music by Adam McCollum and some serious Bingo fitness instructors.

Of course there was also an Elvis memorial event (thanks for pointing it out, Kelly). This year's Elvis Invitationals was held at the EMP's Sky Church last Friday. Another event I forgot to mention was an art opening Gray as Color (featuring Sam Trout and Iosefatu Sua) at Priceless Works Gallery in Fremont also last Friday.

In all three cases I received the invitations too late...

Speaking of email list that miss interesting events - have you heard of the relatively new email list called WUXX? Their goal is "bringing the scene to Seattle's young professionals". We think they suck. See for yourself: http://www.wuxx-events.com.

10th Annual Freehold Studio Series

Lovely Shana writes:

Hello Amigos,

I want to invite you all to attend the 10th Annual Freehold Studio
Series--a showcase for emerging actors, directors & playwrites. I will be performing an original piece with an ensemble formed a few months ago, "Solitary/Ensemble." It is a theatrical movement piece, which explores themes of aloneness and togetherness. It will be performed with several other theatrical scenes, clown, dance, monologue pieces, so it should be a cool show.

The show takes place in Freehold's Theatre in the Oddfellows building on

Pine & 10th in Capitol Hill.
8-10 pm Thurs, Fri and Sat night. (1/15-1/17)
2 pm Sunday afternoon. (1/18.)

I'd love to see you there.

Cheers!
~S.

SunTzu Sound 1 Year Anniversary @ Baltic Room

J-Justice writes:

PV peeps, please join us this Sunday for a special date in history!

SunTzu Sound turns 1 and we want to celebrate with us.

We've had a really successful year pushing the new sounds of the broken beat and future jazz scene. Some great artists have made their way to the Northwest and we feel privileged to have booked/played with them: Bugz in the Attic (Seiji, Afronaught, Daz-I-Kue, Mikey General), Domu, Titonton, Kyoto Jazz Massive, King Britt, Cuica, Cinematic Orchestra, Vikter Duplaix, Dixon, Joy Jones, and The Funky Lowlives. We also hit the road for a very succesful west coast tour this year with stops at some Great venues like The Top in SF.

But first things first, come down to our night FUTURE SOUL this Sunday the 18th and wish us Happy Anniversary!

DON'T FORGET: It's a 3-day weekend celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. So stay up late on Sunday!

**HAPPY HOUR ALL NIGHT LONG**

Unfortunately MLK Day is not an "industrial holiday". I won't be able to party all night on Sunday. But all you police men and bankers you should have fun for me!

Gary Lutz reading at Hugo House

Cliff ("Communication Manager" at the Hugo House) writes:

For our post-holiday consumption: a Jan. 19 reading by Gary Lutz, live from Pennsylvania, where he's writing some interesting fiction. See the release below...

-Cliff

Here are more details:

Darkly funny writer Gary Lutz reads at Hugo House Jan. 19

Who: Gary Lutz

What: "I Looked Alive" – A Reading and Talk with writer Gary Lutz

Where: Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave.

When: Jan. 19, 2004, at 7:30 p.m.
$5 ($3, Hugo House members)

Why: Gary Lutz will brave his fear of flying to visit Seattle (for the first time) to read from his much anticipated, just released second collection of short fiction. "His startling sentences are often darkly funny, and always exactly right," Amy Hempel wrote of his work. In an essay on Lutz in The Believer, Sven Birkerts wrote, "There is more to discuss in the work of Gary Lutz than the edgy, accurate, and at the same time conscientiously offplumb voice." Spend an evening listening to Lutz’s short, sinister and funny tales. Followed by a brief talk.

THE DEAD SCIENCE, GHOST TO FALCO... @ AFTERMATH

The other Loss Leader show this week.

THE STRANGER SAYS:
"Loss Leader curates music events the way gallery owners curate their openings--with attention to the details of the musical
experience as an art more than a commodity. There are two good Loss Leader events this week (the other at Aftermath on the 16th), and this one contrasts Bay Area laptop cannibalizers / conductors like Hammer & Throck and Megaweapon with noir pop/avant jazz act the Dead Science and 'sad-song' one-man band Ghost to Falco. Seattle bills are rarely this eclectic."

Cold Lava

New Directions in Alcohol Consumption: Barhopping in Hamburg (1/10/2004)

Last weekend when I was in Hamburg I met my friend Karin, who has lived long enough in the Schanzenviertel - one of the hippest neighborhoods in Hamburg - to know which of those hundreds of bars are worth visiting and which are not. Since she had to work on the next day we decided to do the "small tour", which ended up taking about five hours.

[In case you ever get the chance to visit Hamburg take the S11 or S31 underground to Sternschanze and head towards Schulterblatt. Or take a cab - like David K. did last year.]

Thier (Schulterblatt)
Our first stop was a new bar called "Thier" (pronounced as "tear"). The name doesn't make any sense. "Tier" is an animal or beast, so my closest translation would be "beahst".

This bar is one of many that follow the concept of the "bar in a living room". There is usually only one person bartending and you better be nice to that person otherwise she'll never give you what you want: drinks. (There is another bar in the same neighborhood that discloses this power relationship already in their name - "Mother").

Back to Thier: I didn't like the bar: the bartenders were bitchy, the drinks were short, and I also didn't like that they automatically tacked on the tip "for you". But they do serve a pretty good hefeweizen called Augustiner.

Daniela Bar (Schulterblatt)
Half a block southwards you'll find this wonderful bar. According to my friend this bar is a classic amongst the "bars in a living room". In fact it was so nice - I wanted to move in! According to Karin a post-doc guy in Hamburg, who was struggling with his dissertation but found support and new strength at the very Daniela Bar. Apparently he managed to finish his dissertation but not without thanking the Daniela Bar in the preface.
[Cross Schulterblatt and turn into Bernstorffstrasse]

Le Fonk (Bernstorffstrasse)
We picked the wrong evening for Le Fonk, which is more a two bedroom apartment with a bar. We only stayed for two minutes. My friend said: "Pot smoking high school kids. Let's go." But I was told that this place is pretty good during the week when the kids have to stay at home. From the news on the radio I learned that the City of Hamburg is considering a new law that would permit kids under 14 to leave the house after 8pm without parents. That might help Le Fonk too.

[Just continue on the same street and cross the busy Stresemannstr. You'll find Mutter (Mother) on the left on the Stresemannstrasse across the street from the big police station.]

Bernstorffbar (Bernstorffstrasse)
A hip bar with a dance floor - so hip that they can afford to ask for a cover charge. They were projecting a cartoon show to the opposite side of the street to attract people. We decided to save our money for drinks and moved on.

[At the next corner is an interesting shop that is specialized in making hats. The name of the shop is "The Girl and the Gorilla". I think I saw the girl. She was still working at midnight. Turn right at that corner (or if you see a gorilla) until you hit Wohlwillstrasse.]

Kurhaus (Wohlwillstrasse)
Another excellent bar in a living room. Kurhaus means "cure house" and should not be mixed up with Kurbad Rossi, which is another bar in the same neighborhood that used to be a spa (Kurbad = "cure bath", Rossi = name of the owner). The people that visit the Kurhaus seem to be a little bit older. The music is not too loud so you can actually have a meaningful conversation. The quality of the wine is better here but it's also a little bit more expensive.

The Kurhaus was also our last stop on this "little tour". It was already 3am, which normally wouldn't have been a problem, because the bars are open until 6am or sometimes even longer. The "big tour" would have included St. Pauli, Hamburg's famous red light district. I don't know which bars Karin would have picked. My list would have probably looked like this: Bar Zentrale, Ex-Sparr, Baluga Bar, Ahoi, Amphore, and of course the famous Golden Pudel Club (Goldener Pudel).

Cheers to Hamburg!
