Housewarming Party for CoCA

CoCA has moved and they are having a party this Saturday:

CoCA requests the pleasure of your company for a housewarming party on Saturday, January 24, 6 - 10 PM at our new location! We are permanently moving to 408 Dexter Ave. N as of 2/1/2004 and would like to take this opportunity to show off our new space and let you know about some of our needs for help and support. We have music lined up for your entertainment and will be serving beer & wine at a cash bar to benefit CoCA and help defray some of our expenses for moving and build out. We also hope to show some videos and slides which highlight CoCA past & present.

There is no admission fee but donations will be gladly accepted in the form of cash, checks, credit, building materials, volunteer skills, and any other ways you feel you can help.

Volunteer musicians scheduled to appear include Plan B & jimmy carter. Many of you are familiar with Plan B from their many appearances at CoCA including our recent Blak & Blu Ball. jimmy carter is actually comprised of brothers Jeremy Carter on hand built instruments and electronics and Tim Carter on drums (sorry no renditions of "Salt Peanuts" by former presidents...at least that we know of. You never know who might drop in at CoCA). There are many good people volunteering their time, skills, and abilities to make this happen so we hope you will come out as well to show your support and let them know they are appreciated!

Buffalo Bill's Defunct Fundraiser @ Bemis

Here is what I am reading between the lines: An ambitious film project in Seattle has burnt through its cash reserves and desperately needs our money:

Help Buffalo Bill's defunct get to the finish line!

Years in the making, the WigglyWorld Start-to-Finish film Buffalo Bill's Defunct is just about complete! Director Matt Wilkins locked picture on the edit, audio wizard Tom Rickell is flying through the sound work, and thanks to an amazing partnership with Modern Digital we¹re able to re-telecine the film, have first rate color correction and finish the film.

We've got one last fundraiser to get the film completed and we want you to attend. Interested in helping a great feature film in its last stages? (This is always the sexiest, most dramatic time to help.) Been tracking the project, and dying to see it on the big screen? Join us for live music, drinks, hobnobbing with the cast and crew, and a sneak preview of a few scenes from the completed film.

Let's see what kind of movie are we talking about:

"Buffalo Bill's Defunct" is an intergenerational study of the various messes family members make when they attempt to deconstruct the walls that separate them, and the subsequent ways they go about cleaning up their messes. The film consists of five chapters, each a story that revolves around a potent metaphor: the skeletal remains of a garage, an eviscerated deer, a watermelon seed lodged in an ear, a painted drunk, a middle-aged woman in a prom dress.

Would I want to watch that movie when it's finished? - No!
Would I want them to finish their project? - Sure, why not.
If you get a kick out of hanging out with the film crew of a Seattle based independent movie and get a free tour through the unique Bemis Building you should definitely go. Otherwise there are plenty of great events to go this Saturday.

Buffalo Bill's Defunct fundraiser
Saturday, January 24 7pm
55 S. Atlantic Street #414, Seattle,

Furball @ Old Drinkmore Cafe

Black Rock City Animal Control presents:

FURBALL

A Theme Camp Fundraising Event
DJ, Dancing, Drinks and a Chill Space

$15 at the door, $10 in animal costume
(21+ id required)

Music all night long by DJ Ki, DJ Diem, and DJ Darek Mazzone
Libations available at the Open Bar

Play all night long in the infamous BRCAC Ball Pit

I think, this invitation by itself doesn't make sense to many of our readers and needs some explanation.

You probably already know, but let's start from the begin: Burning Man (BM) is an "annual art festival and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance" in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. There main web site is http://www.burningman.com . There are tons of "theme camps" at BM. One of them is Animal Control Center. (To get a better understanding of the theme camps it might be helpful to browse through one of those many BM galleries like http://www.maniahill.com/images/gallery/Burning_Man_2003?&page=4 .)

There are a lot of people here in Seattle that participate actively at BM every year. You can get a complete list of Seattle BM camps at http://www.burningmanseattle.com/people/theme2003.asp .

So what does Animal Control exactly do at BM? Here is what they did last year:

BRCAC will make daily collections of pesky playa "creatures" who are running free causing disturbances to camps, streets and or persons of the City. These captured animals will be documented and tagged for scientific research and easy recognition, and possibly spayed/neutered and given "shots". Our trained staff will use the latest in animal reform practices to allow these potentially dangerous animals the chance to be reintroduced to life on the playa. If our staff concludes that an animal has achieved reformed status they will have the opportunity to be adopted by a responsible Black Rock City citizen. Otherwise they will be put to sleep.

The cover charge is $10 to $15. But it will probably be worth it.

Animal Control Fundraiser
January 24: Furball 8PM; Old Drinkmore Cafe;
239 Bellevue Ave (corner of Bellevue and Thomas);
$15 at the door or $10 in advance or in animal costume; 21+.

IQU @ Pioneer Square

DJ Superjew - who is one of the recent winners of the Lucky Strike Art Pack contest (see www.seattleartpack.com) - is pointing out this event. I have been to IQU shows before and I am in full agreement with her recommendation:

Hello Kitties

Another SJ post for your sweet information:
There's going to be a sick, sick show on Saturday night that none of you should miss (that is, unless, you don't live in Seattle). Details:

IQU
Seksu Roba (formerly on Crippled Dick Hot Wax)
Dalmatians (Imputor?)
(avec) DJ Mat Griese and DJ K.O.
(voila!) a groovetube installation by Mat Griese

Some of you may remember this as the "Giant Robot" party space from last fall. And I don't have to tell you that this is going to be the happeningest party for a while...just look at the roster. I'll see you there, plan on it!

Since I don't have much time this week to do the research and write something entertaining about it I'll let you do the work of figuring out the details...

Sunday 1/25

AXOLOTL @ Dance Underground.

This Sunday AXOLOTL will open at Dance Underground. I don't have much information about it except for what I could find in the Stranger:

An experimental, interactive performance with Amii LeGendre and others, directed by Karl Frost.

I really like what Amii LeGendre is doing and I have been to many performances with or of her. In my opinion Amii LeGendre and D7 offer great opportunities for exploring and enjoying modern dance in a small town like Seattle. (If you are interested in modern dance and are willing to pay a little bit more you should check out Mark Morris, who is coming to Seattle soon.)

Dance Underground, 340 15th Ave E, 790-1645. $10-$20. Opens Sun Jan 25 at 7:30 pm. Through Feb 8.

Aki Kaurismaki's DRIFTING CLOUDS @ The Grand Illusion

We are guilty of not telling you earlier about "Heaven and Helsinki", the complete retrospective of finish director Aki Kaurismaki at the Grand Illusion. I love his movies especially the ones that no theater would show because they are so depressing. Many people have probably seen "LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA" but I prefer the darker ones like THE MATCH FACTORY GIRL and ARIEL. That's why my choice for Tuesday will be DRIFTING CLOUDS and not LENINGRAD COWBOYS MEET MOSES, which I expect to be somewhat more upbeat.

Here are the details:

Tuesday- Thursday, January 27- 29 at 7 pm
NORTHWEST THEATRICAL PREMIERE! NEW 35mm PRINT! NOT AVAILABLE ON VIDEO!
DRIFTING CLOUDS
(KAUAS PILVET KARKAAVAT)
(Aki Kaurismaki, 1996, Finland, 35mm, 96 min.)
Set in Helsinki in 1996 amidst widespread unemployment, DRIFTING CLOUDS seems to have come from a 1950s period melodrama, with its bright color schemes and deliberately cloying nostalgia. A married couple (a bus driver and a waitress) both lose their jobs and must struggle to maintain their income, relationship and sanity. Kaurismaki describes the film as a cross between THE BICYCLE THIEF and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. In Finnish with English subtitles.

"…a beautiful, melancholy work that all but restores humanism to contemporary cinema. Who else could make a comedy about unemployment, and turn it into a soulful, transcendent statement about hope and survival?"
-James Quandt, CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO

A Kaurismaki movie wouldn't be a Finish movie without making references to sad Finish Tango. If you get hooked up to it like I am you should get the sampler "Tule Tanssimaan". Okay, I stop.

Slideluck Potshow 22 @ Aftermath

Diana, Jed, and Steven are hosting another Slideluck Potshow. It seems like over the years this event has opened itself more and more open to the public. I should have kept that one email I got after I was recommending a Slideluck Potshow in 2002. The text said something like: We don't need you party hipsters and yuppies at our art event. But that was long time ago and Slideluck Potshow is now in good hands of people that are open minded and don't discriminate party hipsters and yuppies like you and me...

Hey there,

Once again it's time to break out your photos for Slideluck Potshow. This time around the theme is

Austere/Ostentatious

Much beauty can be held by simple form and function - the quality of a line, the texture of a shape, the personality of a face. At the same time, we often yearn for the sweetness of rich color, complex patterns, or a flamboyant portrait. So, come out and show some work, whether new or old, on the theme or off.

For those of you who still don't know what slideluck is about, it is a slideshow and a potluck. Please bring good food, strong drink and up to 5 minutes worth of
slides. Doors will be open at 7:30 and we'll start the slides around 8ish.

We will have a traditional slide projector and a digital one. If you want to show digital, please drop me a line so that I can sign you up. We will be renting a nice one this time around and will be splitting the cost. I'm thinking it will be about $10 a piece. Bring your .jpg images on a cd.

High fives go out to Diana for letting us host at the Aftermath Gallery. http://www.aftermathgallery.com

See ya there,

Steven

Thursday 1/29

The Mineola Twins

Theater plays are always risky. But Pay-What-You-Can Thursdays are a good way to hedge your risks. For me Thursdays are Watch-What-You-Can-Stand Thursdays and this play doesn't make my list. I am simply not into this kind of shows but you might be:

Just in time for election year, Theater Schmeater presents The Mineola Twins, Paula Vogel¹s raucous and passionate satire of American politics, opening on January 23 and running through February 21.

Just how different can identical twins be? Myrna, the ³good² twin, is a staunch conservative and ³stacked², and Myra, the ³evil² twin, is a radical, activist, lesbian, and flat as a pancake. Follow the battles between these two (almost) identical twins through the landscape of the Eisenhower, Nixon,
& Reagan/Bush administrations, as each twin lives out one extreme of America¹s conservative/liberal split, trying to define herself in opposition to the other and exploding our political culture along the way. Wildly theatrical, and ultimately moving, The Mineola Twins takes on the unique schizophrenia that is American politics.

Paula Vogel is the winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Award for Drama for How I
Learned to Drive; she has also received multiple Best Play Obies and numerous other honors. Her other plays include And Baby Makes Seven, Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief, The Baltimore Waltz, and Hot 'n' Throbbing.

Monsire Wissam de Tabbara is inviting us to an evening of chatting in French:

Salut tout le monde,

Les bancs sont placés en rectangle de façon à ce que tout le monde puisse communiquer plus facilement ensemble. Comme toujours, invitez vos amis francophones et venez avec vos histoires intéressantes et amusantes. On commence a 20 :00 (08 :00PM).

A Bientôt,

Wissam Tabbara

Wissam, who has a lot of fun hosting these events, recently suggested that I should create a German evening. His point was that Franz hosts an Italian evening every once in a while and nobody is covering the "German market". I haven't decided yet. Putting a bunch of Germans in a room with alcohol is usually not a good idea (see New Directions In Alcohol Consumption from last week). But I could probably handle it every two months.
