Last week I missed a bunch of events. For example DJ Spooky made a guest appearance at CoCA last Saturday, 5/1 (http://www.g07.org/djspooky.html), and the famous Einstuerzende Neubauten were playing at the Showbox on Wednesday (see http://www.neubauten.org/n_tour.php). I used to be a big fan of the Neubauten and I still think 1/2 Mensch (Half Man) is a brilliant album. The reason I didn't go was that it was a beautiful day and I didn't feel like getting a brain massage from some crazy Germans playing inhumanely loud industrial music.
I also probably promised too much when I was saying I would write a Cold Lava report about my adventures in San Jose and San Francisco. During the day I was busy shopping at places like Amoeba and Kweejibo. On one evening I went to a party of Mesh magazine and the another evening I was bar hopping in Mission until I found the wonderful Beauty Bar. But I did not make it to the Pirate Shop on Valencia and I also missed Tiki Island at the Fairmont Hotel bar. San Francisco has changed. It's not as fun as it used to be for me. There are a lot of crazy people there. I met some. Those were actually crazy-crazy and not "fun-crazy".
Well, I am glad I am back - right on time to witness a spring party eruption. My favorite is probably Roq La Rue's birthday party. There is also a detailed Cold Lava report from Gates and a letter to the editor.
Cheers!

Big Air Dog Competition
I am not really recommending it. But some are into this. Here is what I know about it:
Your Fido has legs? Then sign him up for the Big Air Dog Competition, a jumping competition rooted in traditional water fowling. Dogs run and jump into a pool, judged on how far they fly. If there is such a thing as doggy ballet, this is it.

Roq La Rue: "Now We Are Six"
I will definitely go. I ran into Kirsten at Russ's fantastic Two Of A Kind Party three weeks ago and I asked her where the name "Roq La Rue" comes from. Unfortunately I was too drunk and forgot half of her story - as I am realizing now that I am trying to write something meaningful about Roq La Rue's six birthday. Either way I am excited about going especially because I am a big fan of Mark Ryden and Marion Peck, who are apparently a couple. Here are the details:

More Fish Balls for Dinner @ Viveza Gallery
Michael and Deborah write:
Dear Party Volcano,
Viveza Gallery is pleased to present More Fish Balls for Dinner, an installation of new mixed-media works by Seattle artist Heinrich Toh and Sugar Daddies and Taffy Pulls, an installation of oil paintings on canvas by Seattle artist Marilyn Jones.
Displaced physical and emotional places, time past and time spent, memory of sensation and remembering coalesce in the works of both Toh and Jones. Toh examines his cultural background while exploring displacement and the sense of familiar that one leaves behind through mixed-media 2D and 3D works. Jones conveys autobiographical childhood sensations of carnivals, playing marbles, candy melting in your mouth, and the smell of campfires, through abstract oil works on canvas.
Please join us at the artist reception on Friday, May 7th from 6 - 10pm.
Hope to see you then!
Thanks,

Superjew DJ set at Pretty Parlor
Somebody broke into DJ Superjew's house on Capitol Hill and stole a bunch of stuff including her Mac G4. She writes:
Hello darlings..
Well, I am in the painful process of replacing my dear sweet G4. I feel
like a total widower (is that correct?) and I am not by any means
exaggerating. It is like taking in a new lover after your last one died
tragically on train tracks....so anyhow, ebay is acting as my "dating
circuit", if you will. If any of you know of a G4 lappie up for grabs
for not too much, give me a holler.
Speaking of Hollers---my pal Bootsy Holler is having an exhibition of
her photos of Africa (when she was doing some filming for a band she
was on tour with last year) at the Alibi Room this coming Tuesday, May 11th
at 8pm. Very poignant with that visual snap that we all love her for.
Do come.
Also, and this is why I'm writing this in the first place, I'm-a-gonna
be doing a RARE SUPERJEW DJ SET AT THE PRETTY PARLOR this Friday, May 7th.

More about AIRFLOracle:
The AIRFLOracle was founded when a bunch of surly, out-spoken trance-loathing drunks came together to build a stronger, more organized collective. This work has brought a new paradigm in a growing drinking community, and for those looking to integrate with the Northwest's mirthful undercurrent.
Let us call upon new ritual experiences through the drink-based foolishness of our own culture, creating:
* Drinking Space *
* Anti-Trance-formational Experiences *
* Art with Inebriation *
Through this expression of music, art, and drink... let us call upon The AIRFLOracle, the community empowered with a commitment to excommunication and self-destruction.
AIRFLOracle is a growing group of events, projects, parties, and bad ideas by a collective of participating artists and surly jerks. These musicians, performers, visionaries, drunkards, and loudmouths collaborate to express the experiences that influence the greater community. It is our mission to provide the environment and support that encourages art, creativity, radical self-expression and anti-trance-formational experiences through mirth.

I hope you all are doing well. As for me I am a bit frazzled. It has
been a busy week of working on recording projects and gigs.
This Friday you can catch me at the Mirabeau Room doing throat singing,
playing sarod, darbouka and tabla, and hopefully dancing a bit.
The rest of the cast include for this Friday May 7th, Festivities
include:
1) Deepayan Acharjya rocking the tabla remarkably well.
2) DJ Anshul bringing Bollywood beats, an eclectic assortment of new
Bhangra mixes, and some musical surprises in addition to his notorious
modeling of the latest in humorous T-shirt designs.
3) Young Darek Mazzone helping us all get globally eclectic with
Latin, House, Hip Hop, Arabic sounds, and hopefully, finally some
Fantastichen Vier.
4) MC Bones sitting in doing some Dancehall toasting.
...
Peace, Best musical wishes,

I am a big fan of the German hip-hop band Die Fantastischen Vier. One of my favorite albums is "Lauschgift", which is a clever pun. "Lausch" means "listen" and "gift" means "poison". (That's why Leavenworth's Giftshop is unintentionally funny - at the first glance I was thinking of a poison shop.) The pun comes in when you consider that many Asian people pronounce "R" as "L". If you reverse engineer "Lauschgift" with that assumption you'll get "Rauschgift" - which means "drug". A trained German eye doesn't need this explanation but on their CD the Fantastischen Vier they mixed in sounds snippets of the Bonanza show with a dubbed Hop Seng (or whatever the cook's name was) complaining about "Rauschgift" everywhere. It's a brilliant album.

I ran into Rebecca Luke (www.lesegoistes.com, www.sustainablestyle.org) at Voyage last Monday and she told me that she would have some sort of a fashion show at Sindibad. Rebecca is the queen of style but I don't think she will be able to rescue this event that tries to jump on the Middle Eastern party train.
Sindibad of the Sea invites you to share in his wondrous voyages to unchartered lands!
Adventures that will awaken your imagination and challenge your will to survive. Devise miraculous escapes from giants, genies, and unimaginable terrors. Encounter the romance and splendor of faraway kingdoms. Search for treasures from around the world...
To honor Sindibad, the Sultan has commissioned a celebration. Sample exotic music, spirits and culinary delights from the Middle East. Bollywood @ Baltic Room.
Guess what? It's Panjabi Week! So here is what I have been told about Panjabi MC's show last week: It sucked big time. He was playing "Mundian To Bach Ke" over and over again and the crowd was creepy. There were fights - like in the good old days when Bollywood started - and some guy smashed the window of the Green Room. The funniest part were billboards they put up with ads for lawyers in Kent and dentists in Renton. The ads were so intrusive that sometimes parts of telephone numbers from local businesses were projected on djs while they were playing.
Get ready to break a sweat as this Saturday the monthly Bollywood party
presents a great line of DJs and performers as well as lots of brand new music.
Making sure that you get the right dose of both Bollywood and Bhangra

GMP Documentary screening party: "Hooray for HOLLYWEIRD"
Dirty Bunny writes:
Hey Guerrillas!
Starting in December of 2004, a team of talented student filmmakers
took on the task of making a 15 minute documentary about Guerrilla
Masquerade Party. Besides bravely filming at both the December
20th "Sleazy Santas" and the January 31st "Space Oddity" parties,
they also interviewed Dirty Bunny, his parents, and tons of the
folks that make GMP what it is: YOU!
In March, the filmmakers (Thomas Beck, Brandy Parris, Keri Hadfield,
Bebet Caguin, and Phillip Whaley) finished editing the hours and
hours of film they'd taken, and now the finished film is ready for
viewing. We hear from some folks who HAVE seen it that it's really
great. So great, in fact, that it's being submitted to several film
festivals - Ladyfest, the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Fest, the
Port Townsend Film Festival, Bumbershoot, BendFilm, and the NW Film
and Video Festival in Portland.
But you don't have to wait for the film festivals to see it, because
on Saturday, May 8th, our next Guerrilla Masquerade Party will be a
screening party for the new film about all of us. The party will get
started at 10pm, and the film will be shown at midnite. And yes,
there will be a bar -- with drink specials and everything!
And since this IS Guerrilla Masquerade Party, there needs to be a
theme, right? We couldn't just have a screening party without some
great costumes, could we? Hell no! The theme for the nite will
be "Hooray for HOLLYWEIRD!" -- to honor the film industry,
independant filmmakers, and the city that so much of it comes from.
Of course, everyone who's anyone will be there, walking down (or
perhaps wearing) the red carpet. The paparazzi will have a field day
with all the big stars showing up. Directors & actors, coke-addled
starlets & washed up B-movie cinematographers will share stories
amidst a crowd that could include extras from Dawn of the Dead,
Party of Five, or maybe Splash!
And what would Hollyweird be without a few of the sights and sounds
of the city itself? Stars from the walk of fame and the hustlers &
prostitutes who call them 'the office'. Hand-prints from Grauman's
Chinese Theatre and West Hollywood muscle queens. They all belong at
a party in Hollywood's honor.
And don't forget those actress/model/waitresses and
actor/model/baristas still trying to make it big. We've been told
the venue has some nice casting couches to help them get their big
break.
Robert Redford may have Sundance, but we've got "Hooray for
HOLLYWEIRD!"
Guerrilla Masquerade Party
Saturday, May 8th at 10pm.
1022 First Avenue South, just west of the Seattle Exhibition Hall – between Seahawks Stadium and Safeco Field. The entrance itself is between Olympic
Reprographics and Salute – a new Italian restaurant – and is clearly

But be warned, Guerrillas! The Mariners are taking on the Yankees
just across South Royal Brougham Way that nite starting at 7pm, so
parking will undoubtedly be limited. We highly recommend taking a
cab, bus, or carpooling. Check out the invitation

Cold Lava
Gates Ballard Strikes Again...
Friday, April 30
Friday started off in flames at the Hot as Hell 2, the second annual
recurring party this time held at the at the Catwalk. Put on by
Dorje, Piero, and Ahmed -- all Microsoft types with hard names to
remember that are even harder to spell (previous to the Hot as Hell 1
they threw the annual Carnival party.) Essentially it was Microsoft
opportunity to be freaky, but only 1/12 of the crowed remembered to
dress up for it. The pyrosutra girls were there as entertainment --
but the only fire they had, however, was a dance where they held one
small cupped candle in each hand. For their other two acts they
hula-hooped and then had really long silver freaky fingernails. It
was pyrosutra without the pyro. So despite the horns, costumes, and
latex in the crowed, very few people knew that pyrosutra were burners
in any sense of ! the word. A flamboyantly Flamenco-dressed birthday
boy Jonathan turned 21 for the 9th time and the only thing that
really made the party really hot was the latex
coat that I was wearing, although the music was intermittently not
bad.
Then on to Tiberio’s sexual extravaganza, where he tried to slip me
the tongue as he met me at the door and after stroking himself
through his dress he pounced on my date. The groove was cool and
mellow, and the sexual tension would have been much higher, except
everyone on the guest list had already seen everyone else on the
guest list in various states of undress at other times during the
year. Chocolate covered oysters, a Ballard tradition. It was an
incestuous grope party among friends, but hey you can't
go wrong with that, eh?
Finally, I finished the night with at a small wind down party but
when I got there found them winding up on artificial stimulants ...
I moved on to a late night booty call.
Saturday May 01
Saturday night started off with a 30+1 birthday dinner for Brenna at
the Marrakesh. 30+1?? I can certainly say that the 10 years between
21 and 31 does make a difference in the type of party being thrown.
The Marrakesh is a dimly lit carpet covered restaurant in Bell Town
with Caucasian appearing waters who are unable to read the Arabic
writings of the menu. The food was good, but interestingly all
courses (including the meat) had sugar added to them. The belly
dancer balancing a sword on her head made pleasurable intermission to
the food challenges (all the food was finger food without being
finger friendly – I mean come-on, couscous with your fingers?? …)
Wazhma opened Retail Therapy late for a one-year bash and a decent
turn-out ensued. Henna was being drawn on innocent party goers up
stairs and the massage therapist who was mentioned on the Evite must
have split for the night. The highlight of the party, however, was
when someone knocked over a mannequin and broke some glass. There
was a silent hush as Wazhma descended the stairs, and with a big smile
and open arms told everyone it was all just fine! Well, that's one
way to *crash* a party!
Moving on then to Amy and Orion's open house on Capital hill, it was
a quiet little bash where the main entertainment was hanging out in
the too small dimly lit hallway (forcibly keeping those party
conversations intimate). The roof served up a pleasant view of the
city as I took in that clean night air through the end of my
cigarette. Tom, the raspy voiced mime clown of kook club
(kookclub.com), assumed it must be a costume party if he were invited
so he showed up wearing in a bit of shrubbery that he pulled off a
tree moments before arriving. The highlight of the party was a
mysterious box "not to be opened before midnight" that contained bits
of costumery and there was the chance to see the mime-clown
commendeer a piece of large construction equiptment next door while
wearging wig-like-hat thingy. What a clown.
I then dropped by the Mix (or is it MiXX??) party at a warehouse downtown. Shortly after checking in I was ready to check out. This was not a warehouse
rave at all, but rather had the feel of a nightclub dressed up as a
rave just to get my 10 bucks at the door. There was a ceiling ring
with two girls hanging from it, and for all of two songs shadow
dancers danced behind a tall screen. The highlight for me was when
the ugly one flipped me off when I tried to dance with her after her
“act”. With such New York hospitality I flipped her off in kind and
kept on dancing. But that indeed explained the entire mood of the
party. Most everyone was standing around with a drink in hand not
really meeting anyone else in the eye except for the very friend they
came with. The music was good and semi-erotic scenes from soft porn
were flashed on a sheet hanging from the ceiling. But v! ery few
people could be bothered to dance. It was a Mix party that had
neither mix nor mingle. I think it would have taken a gigantic power blender to get that crowed stirred up ...
sidenote:
One of my minions who holds a day job for a large, eastside, corporate
software company reports of seeing a flyer for Mix parties tacked to a
random bulletin board in a random back hallway in building #xx. Yeah,
that's the best place to find your party guests. At least you know
they can afford to bring a bottle of booze.

Letters to the Editor
MIX Nights: Synesthesia (5/1/04)
Thanks a lot for your note Party Volcano,
I am one of the organizers of MIX Nights and was very glad to see we
got included in your calendar, which I always check before making weekend
plans.
One day I will ask how you get to know about so many cool events,
including the underground ones. I wanted to tell you a little bit more about MIX Nights, our vision and the kind of events we are putting together. Also
wanted to reinforce the invitation for you to attend and experience the
quality and excitement of these parties.
We are a group of friends whose houses became to small for own "get
togethers". We created MIX Nights to organize parties every other
month, starting with Eruption that attracted over 500 people, excellent DJs
and talented performers. We got many positive and excited comments about
the party from people who started to actively forward our mails. Now, as
you saw in the Sysnethesia evite, we already have over 1000 emails (not even
counting the extra guests). And those were all built without spam, just
word of mouth and forwarded messages.
What I love about what we are doing is that we offer "club-like"
quality but still keep a close environment of friends of friends who are not more then 3 connections away. Guess we are still not meeting Kevin Beacon this way hmmm?
J It's also pretty exciting to bring underground performers and artists
to a crowd that not always gets exposed to these opportunities.
Again, the best way for you to experience all that is coming to one of
our events. Let me know if you can make it on Saturday and do contact me ... so that we can chat more and meet in person.
Counting the minutes until the party,
Alberto
Alberto,
I didn't go to your party last Saturday. But from what I have heard it sounded it was actually not too bad (Gates was not impressed but others liked it). I flipped through the invitation list and it looks like those 576 people that said they would attend were actually real except for Dan's (Wig & Skirt) reply:
dan corcoran (+ 43 guests) Ummmm...uh.. will Jugdesh and Tor be there? I have to wax the car that night.
But don't tell me that these from the Eruption list were all real:
daniel hassan (+ 39 guests)
youssef (+ 30 guests)
Matt Warmack (+ 14 guests)
a-dianho (+ 9 guests)
vmquinta (+ 9 guests)
Albert Shen (+ 9 guests)
Angelo (+ 9 guests)
luandah (+ 7 guests)
I still can't shake off this feeling that your MIX nights are not really designed to "keep a close environment of friends of friends". They look like commercial events to me. If ConWorks' rent in Paul Allen Land is $1000 per month (I am not making this up!) then renting a hall at Thomas and Dexter for one evening can't be that expensive. Let me crunch some numbers: Ten bucks cover charge times 576 (minus Dan's 42) is $5340 plus oodles of pesetas from the cash bar - that must have added up nicely for your little "Eruption fund"!
But you know what? It doesn't really matter whether you guys made some money, or whether you are doing this only for your friends, or both. I only care about whether the readers of this silly email letter including myself have a good time at your events and that seemed to be the case for some people I know that went to your last MIX Night.
So, please keep us in the loop and let me know when you are having another MIX night. If you like donate some tickets for PV readers next time. They will appreciate it.
Best regards,
- Party Volcano.
