Friday 5/2.

“Seeing the Unseen” @ PCNW

Recently Photographic Center Northwest was the recipient of the coveted 4 star rating on the PV Snack-O-Meter. These guys fully understand the importance of snacks at an art opening.

This month, in a exhibition entitled “Seeing the Unseen, ” PCNW features the photos of Harold E. Edgerton, whose early work with stroboscopic photography “froze time” and captured such striking images as bullet cutting through a Jack of Diamonds playing card and the “frozen” crown of a milk drop. Though Edgerton’s purpose in creating this work was primarily scientific, the images stand on their own. It’s fascinating—breathtaking even—to perceive the physical world in way that is normally beyond our perception.

In conjunction with this exhibit, next week, Harold’s son, Bob Edgerton, will give a lecture on his father’s work and a demonstration of stroboscopic photography. (See Future Lava below for more info.)

Photographic Center Northwest, 900 12th Ave, 6 to 8 pm, free.

Crash On The Hill.

CRASH
A head on collision of visual art, music and fashion featuring:

Daniel Michael Viox - Visual Art
Randy Wood - Visual Art
India Nagy - Visual Art
DJ Care - DJ
Ms Margie - DJ
Alica Tiara - DJ
DJ St. Gabriel - DJ
Fashion: ...hey, just dress cool, ok?

What to expect: This is a First Friday event in traditional opposition to those high-brow First Thursday events down in

Pioneer Square I used to go to when there was a lot of free wine, shoe building parties and Paul Schell was doin' coke in

the back room with the rest of us. Expect some great visual stimulation, great DJ's slapin' wax on the grill, your friends

mixin' and minglin'. It's not a big space, but we are hoping for a big turn-out.

The Art: Randy Woods has become the "invisible hand" of Capitol Hill participating in everything from Comic art for The

Tablet to tons of work with SOIL gallery. Randy's influence has become a part of our culture and landscape. Daniel

Michael Viox has graced the walls of many a gallery in Seattle in the last 2 years and it will not be long until our little

secret is out.

The Music: French 75 has been kicking out some of the best old-skool indie, 80's and hip-hop for legendary
Capitol hill parties. They are super fun. See their website for more info: www.french75.net

Friday May 2nd, 2003
Expected Hours of operation: 7:30pm - 11:30pm

Indonesian Shadow Puppet Theatre @ University of Washington Campus.

PV reporter Steve Miller is pointing out this interesting free event:

Okay, this is it: my grand finale with Gamelan Pacifica. I'm giving you a couple weeks notice because everybody's always

so busy and needs to schedule their palm pilots weeks in advance, ya know. Anyways, the show is FREE, it's got great

puppets and a great puppeteer, and god forbid, I'm singing. This is really the best way to hear gamelan music - absolutely

nothing dull here.

Hope to see you there...

The Origin of Shadow Play

An Ancient Javanese myth about the God Wisnu, who descended to the world of mortals and created the arts in order to save the world from destruction by the war-loving, power-hungry Great Ogre. Magda Baker and Nina Frenkel @ Artemis Gallery

A friend of mine has a Madga Baker print, and every time I look at it, I’m drawn in by the sense of line, texture, color. There’s a certain flattened perspective and wobbly balance going on that makes it fascinating to study. Baker’s latest work takes her wonderful off-kilter sense of composition and applies it to images inspired by everyday aphorisms. The result is weird, funny and morbidly wonderful.

Also showing will be Nina Frenkel whose work I'm not as familiar with. But what I have seen makes me curious to see more. She's got a strong graphical sense--Frenkel is by trade an illustrator for the likes of Slate and Bitch Magazines--and the paper cutout collages she makes are dddelightful and humorous.

We don’t know what the snack situation will be like, but in this case, the art alone will be good enough to justify attendance. PV plans on being there.

Saucebowl @ Leilani Lanes

Did you mail in your check for the Saucebowl that we told you about in last week’s Future Lava? If so you are in for a treat. Nationally syndicated sports writer and semi-pro bowler, Scott Greer, explains:

For the 7th year in a row, Dana Myers will be hosting SAUCEBOWL at Leilani Lanes in Greenwood. A good-natured bowlin'/drinkin'/flirtin' party featuring Dana's friends, and friends of friends. They're a cute lot in their twenties and thirties, fun-loving, and far more approachable than the hipsters at most local "art" gatherings. Bad bowling will be followed by bad karaoke (the best kind) in the tiki-inspired Leilani Lounge. Of course, being a skilled bowler is of little importance at this type of event. Most important--flattering pants! Admit it, you know the contour of every butt you've ever bowled with. Perhaps its the easiest way for the brain to read human locomotion. Try to resist, your eyes--booty fixed! Ayesha A., a smoldering brunette, knows the game all too well. "I bowl because I have a great ass--period!" She evaluates pin configuration and prevailing conditions before taking a long pull from a flask she keeps in her leather vest. "When I approach the lane, every man in the house wishes his name was Jordache! STEE-RIKE!!!" This is not a game to her--this is who she is. Well, I guess that's not completely true. I mean, ah, she never actually DID or SAID any of those things--but, she sure could!! I mean, she is HOT! Yeah, and speakin' of hot looking babes--how about that Angela G.? Oooh-Weeee!!! She is one fine piece of...wait, STOP! Dammit! You're doing it again! C'mon man, you weren't gonna blow it this time...OK, OK, just breathe...that's it, there you go..CRAP! I'm still writing? DAMMIT! DAMMIT!!!

We don’t know if it’s too late to join in the booty gazing, since you were supposed to mail in checks ahead of time. Maybe you can express courier over a check to hostess Dana. Here's the details:

You know the drill by now: Sauce-BOWLing, Sauce-Karaoke-ing, Sauce-merriment with Seattle's sauciest!
Never been?
What are you waiting for?!??!
Everybody's doing it! Invite your friends. Invite your friends' friends.

Dress Me Up @ SOIL.

Karen writes:

Seven artists from around the country explore the themes embodied in the title "Dress Me Up" - a twist on an

early Madonna song. Themes of costume, masquerade, transformation, adornment, theater, identity, power and play are explored through a variety of media. Within our culture, artifice is often looked upon as negative, empty and false, while the "natural" is deemed pure, authentic and real. The work in Dress Me Up plays within this dichotomy; the masquerade becomes subversive and the façade is explored as a tool of power and communication. They each take notes, or prisoners, from "Dress Me Up" and present what ranges from subtly subversive to overtly political and feminist work, allowing for a re-evaluation of our cultural and societal concerns.

Iron Rodeo @ CoCA.

May 3rd through May 28th CoCA presents Iron Rodeo, an exhibition of cast iron and metal art featuring 16 artists:

The exhibition is the outgrowth of an artist residency and iron pour at Maryhill Museum which occurred in August, 2002.
An opening party and special benefit concert sponsored by Tablet Newspaper will be held on May 3rd from 8 PM - 12 AM

featuring music by Hypatia Lake, The Guest Stars, The Stares & Half Light. Admission is $5 CoCA members / $7 Public.

The exhibition includes:

Allison Gates Siphron, Roger Ralston, Tony Knapp, Cynthia Lahti, Francis Fox, Kendra Grace Brock, Tamsie Ringler (artist and curator), Leland Means, Caprice Pierucci Taniguchi, Marilu Swett, Artelia Court, Kathy A. Budd, Sarah Michelle Clover, Karl Richard Unnasch, Kc Grennan, Scott Fitzel

My eyes stopped at "Karl Richard Unnasch". They wanted to read "Unarsch". In German "Arsch" means "ass" and "un"

usually introduces a negation (or if you are a developer: "flips the bit"). That makes it a "Karl Richard Not-an-ass" in my

funny brain. Is that enough to get me interested in the show? - Probably not.

CoCA, $5/$7. Public. All ages are welcome. Bar with ID.

Letters to the Editor

Party Volcano is taking a short break from Deranged Ludd (yes he is still ranting) and would like to respond to Steve Wells, owner of the Re-bar. I couldn't care less whether it's spelled "ReBar" or "Re-Bar" or even "Re-bar" as long as they keep having those Crafty Church Socials with glue guns and sewing machines. With these words I am handing over this case to Party Volcano's Chief Discipline Officer Andrew who will do the dirty work of making fun of Mr. Wells...

RE: Crafty Church Social at The ReBar (4/27).

Hello Party Volcano folks
Thanks for listing "Church of Crafts" night at Re-bar, but could I, as the person who named the establishment ask that the name be correct?
Re-bar is and always has been spelled "Re-bar"...a hyphen, lowercase
"b" and never, ever "The" involved. Check out our logo...see, no "The"
and no capitalized "B". The worst-case senario [sic] then would be "The
ReBar", as you have it. Imagine me grossly misspelling your daughter's name on her wedding invitation and you will know the feeling I have when I see it wrong. Don't mean to be snotty, just stating the facts, maam.
Thanks,
Steve Wells, Re-bar - 233-9873

Dear Mr. Wells:

We made a terrible error. Not only did we misspell "Re-bar" but of all the possible ways to misspell it, we chose, as you so accurately indicate, "the worst case senario [sic]" Our Brazilian supermodel/proofreader, Gisele, explains:

I so sorry, Mr. Wells. Last week, I was backstage at Gucci show in Milan and I try to call you to check spelling of your baby daughter’s name. But I got so confused with international calling codes and I not hear telephone so well because Manuel, he so chatty when doing my makeup.

Maybe I call wrong number. I thought person who answer say "Good evening, this is Homo Steve." I thought it you! But now I think maybe I accidentally dial wrong number and not hear right because Manuel talking so much. Maybe they really say "Good evening, this is Home Depot." You know, that explain would why they tell me "rebar" have no hyphen.

I know this no excuse. One time newspaper misspell my name as "Gazelle". I so angry! I not four legged horned mammal. I am Gisele, International Supermodel and Party Volcano Proofreader. So I can understand why this gets—how does Manuel say it?—gets your panties all tied in knots.

Please forgive me.

Rest assured Mr. Wells, we take such mistakes very seriously. Our CDO (Chief Discipline Officer) has personally administered appropriate discipline to Gisele. [Note to our readers: The photos of this, as well as all past discipline sessions with Gisele, are available on our Platinum Eruption Services web site for only $19.99 per month. We accept Amex, Visa, MasterCard and Diner's credit cards.]

Mr. Wells, we hope you will accept our sincere apologies.

Best regards,

Party Volcano
