Men in Blue @ Belltown Billiards

Andrea Koster is trying something new:

Men in Blue! That's right, the details are here!

"VOTE FOR THE COPS HOT ENOUGH TO MAKE THE 2004 MEN IN BLUE CALENDAR!"

It's this Thursday night at Belltown Billiards! It's a Special Edition Ladies Night Event. There will be music, dancing...and did we mention the fine-looking cops in attendance? There will also be a Dating Game - it's your chance to win a date with a Calendar Cop!

SCM will have their own table at the event. Andrea will be there and will have some SCM signage on the table so everyone can find it. Proceeds of this event go to the WA State Memorial Fund, DARE, Make-A-Wish and Children's Hospital. This is not a SCM-organized event rather we're a sponsor of the event...
And we're mighty excited to be going and surmising the Cop Calendar Candidates!

And yes, guys are welcome too. Come out to support a good cause - and keep in mind, there won't be enough cops for every female there !

Hope to see you there!
Space City Mixer

I am not really recommending this event. I just thought it's so strange that it must be mentioned. Who wants to get involved with halfnaked doughnut eating cops in a dating game? I actually know some people that might be interested - since guys are welcome too: Why not combining the next Welcome Back Prisoners party with an event like this?

When: Thur-July 17, 2003 7:00 PM-Midnight
Cost: $10.00 (Pay at the door only, it's a fundraiser not a SCM event {but we thought it would be fun to go to and worthy of our support!})
Where: Belltown Billiards at 90 Blanchard in Belltown (Downtown Seattle)

Pressure Print Show Opening@ Bluebottle Art Gallery

This show will feature prints by local artists including, Want Buy Have, Eryon Franklin, Joe Alterio, Sedora Debondt, Magda Baker, Christine Grykien, Sam Trout, and others.

I happen to be familiar with Magda Baker and Sedora Debondt’s wry, offbeat work—each very different and each well worth the trip to check out this show. Baker’s images have a delightfully off-kilter sense of line, and they accompany aphoristic sayings—the effect is both humorous and slightly creepy. Debondt takes images from early 20th century exercise books—for example, funny looking men with medicine balls—and juxtaposes them to written phrases regarding etiquette. It’s a wonderfully odd effect: at once, subtly nostalgic, weird, funny.

I’m also curious to see what Sam Trout is up to, the creator of the super cute Lula image.

In short, no matter what the snack situation turns out to be, I plan to be there.

Party at Jim Evans' House.

John writes:

Sat the 19th, party at Jim Evans house. email Jim@argorecords for driving directions. it's his birthday, he uses things like his birthday as an excuse to have large parties, and he expects 75 to 100 to show up there. He also knows a lot of openminded people so you can expect to meet people that are dating multiple other people at the party... One reason Jim wants to email directions is so that he can sort of prescreen to avoid people that really shouldn't be going to a party at his house... not that anyone on party volcano fits that bill.

Thanks!

Sunday, 7/20.

Faith And Disease @ Fenix.

I have seen them twice. John likes them too:

Sun the 20th Again with the Fenix. Maybe they are starting to have a
cooler vibe. Faith And Disease is playing. They are a female fronted
"darkwave" band. meaning keyboards acoustic guitars, mellower sound,
and with lots of goth sorts of overtones to the music. but the lead singer
has an AMAZING voice. VERY much worth checking out on a sunday evening
when there isn't much else going on in the live music world here in seattle.

... Except you can get youself peed on by a naked Elvis in Ballard (see The Stranger suggests).

4th City Weekly @ Deep Down Lounge.

Greg writes:

4th City Weekly is an electronic music night that happens every monday in the very cozy Deep Down Lounge (it's under that pool hall on Jackson between 1st Ave. and Occidental). There will be a Filastine set this very monday. It's what I do when I am
free of Tchkung & Infernal Noise Brigade responsibilites, but is very disimilar to those projects. Mostly this set will feature some obscure gangsta hip-hop from Algeria and Brasil, a bit of local glitch, and my own hand-crafted laptop tunes, which are influenced by the aforementioned genres. All this for only $2. I'll be on from about 11pm to midnight.
There are two other good DJ's and some visuals too.

A Night of Haikus @ cafe venus & the mars bar.

Juliana writes:

hey gang,

remember last weekend? and how we had the writing haikus & cookie party? the haikus for this project: "america's next next top model: a (collaborative!) project in haiku"? yeah, you remember! and if you don't, i am very, very sorry. but you wrote such dirty, dirty haikus. and they will all be shared (but not by me, oh no) on tuesday night (the 22nd) at cafe venus & the mars bar. you know, around 8ish. or 9ish. some come down, drink a beer, a cocktail, whatever, and read a haiku. you know you want to.

Let's refresh our memory: What is Haiku?

Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain.
Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku. This new form of poetry was to be written, read and understood as an independent poem, complete in itself, rather than part of a longer chain.
Strictly speaking, then, the history of haiku begins only in the last years of the 19th century. The famous verses of such Edo-period (1600-1868) masters as Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa are properly referred to as hokku and must be placed in the perspective of the history of haikai even though they are now generally read as independent haiku.

Here is one (Akutagawa):

Green frog,
Is your body also
freshly painted?

Less old school but not less entertaining are spam haikus and that impressive web based haiku generator. I also found some really funny error message haikus. I don't know whether it's true but Sony chairman Asai Tawara has apparently said, that Sony would replace the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages with their own Japanese haiku poetry in one of their operating systems.

How would that look like? - Here are four of them:

Order shall return.
