UNCLE DANNY"S ART CAMP @SAW

Dan Ayala writes:

Hi Shango,

Sorry I haven't been quicker to get out info. I'm still hammering out details.
We'll have 5 different stations where you'll be asked to take a turn or two each to make art. Oil painting, acrylic painting, drawing with various mediums, clay molding, encaustics and some kind of free for all. Drinks and food. A hearty welcome for spectators.

Some of us will be referees to make the artists stop and switch as needed.
We tried it on a smaller scale a year and a half ago and cranked out some decent artwork.

I think it will be really fun and a good opportunity to meet other Seattle artists.
I'm calling it the seclusion challenge because I'll be trying to host a "lock-in" to keep the production line going. I'm getting a lot of prep done, canvases streched, materials bought. This event is possible due to the Cultural Development Authority of King County.

Anyway, I hope you can make it.

Fantagraphics announced in earlty June that it was experiencing serious financial trouble. A grassroots campaign begun on the Internet resulted in over $80,000 in orders for the publisher over a two week period in early June that enabled the publisher to weather the immediate crisis.

The first show, the 25th at the Tractor, is actually a CD release party for Seattle band PORTER HARP. Only Built to Spill will be donating their proceeds to Fantagraphics. The Sunday night gig, featuring local band KINKSI opening for BTS, is the proper Fantagraphics benefit. Fantagraphics will have a table set up, selling an exclusive show poster as well as other merchandise and comic books.

Illuminares Lantern Festival in Vancouver B.C.

When I went to this lantern festival a couple of years ago, I felt like I was floating through a waking dream. Islands of light of all shapes and sizes—fantastical fish, miniature planets, giant birds—softly flickered across the night landscape. It was, at once, gentle, chimerical, wonderful. Mostly local Vancouverites attend Illuminares and nearly everyone brings a candle-lit, paper lantern, whether huge and elaborate, or basic and simple. It's the best sort of gathering: free, creative, magical. It is well worth the trip to Vancouver BC.

Make your own lantern and go.

Free, Trout Lake, Vancouver B.C., festival starts at dusk, lantern making workshop from 2pm to 5pm, more info:

Gaia Consort's "House Concert" in Redmont.

John writes:

Gaia Consort is having a "House Concert" This is where they put the band (in an acoustic setup) at a private home and do a show. They do this 2 or 3 times a year and usually get 40-80 people showing up and it's very cool.
In this case, the show is in the back yard and it's well set up for a great show.

Gaia Consort is a band that plays what could loosly be called earth centered music, and they appeal to the open-relationship community as well as to the pagans. BUT, they play with an electric cello istead of a bass, an electric violin instead of an electric guitar and an amplified acoustic guitar to handle the rhythem. They are satisfyingly politically incorrect, and musically VERY talented. It's a laid back crowd, and these are always fun events.

here are the specifics...

Saturday July 26th, 7:30pm
$6--$15 suggested donation

11320-169th Ct NE, Redmond (425) 883-8986

Come see what may the last "acoustic oriented" Gaia Consort show for specific directions to the event, go to www.gaiaconsort.com follow the link to "schedule", and from there to "directions" And I'll see you all at the show.

The Space Virgins present: RAPTURE.

This is the big event this weekend. The short story is: Rapture takes place Saturday night between Pike and 10th at 3 great spaces, with 10 DJ's, Live 6 piece Persian music from Shourangzee, and naked sushi at midnight in the garden of earthly delights.

Mark Lacas (DJML) writes:

*! Upcoming Party Report !*
Rapture, this year's version of the Space Virgin's party is coming in just 3 days (Saturday the 26th). That's right folks, on July 26th, the Space Virgins are throwing down with a 3 location progressive party.

The first space "Temple of Mount Olympus" (Oliwood Films 910 1/2 E. Pike St.) is right behind the Shell Station and Miguel's Surplus Store at Pike and Broadway.

The second space "Hades", is around the corner in the old Groovetech space, now Fat Kid Studios 1417 N. 10th Ave.

The third space "Garden of Earthly Delights" (Chill Space) is across the street from the Fat Kid at Union Art Garage 1418 10th Ave.

Anyone who made it to last year's Space Virgin party (Like a Virgin) knows this is an event not to miss. The flyers are printed, the decorations are being readied and the DJs are warming up their sets. . .

Infernal Noise Brigade presents: A Night of Chance.

This is another big event. I like it even better than Rapture because it's somewhat illegal.
A member of the Infernal Noise Brigade (INB) is inviting us to a night of chance.
There are many ways to lose and gain. This is one of them. Pol explains:

hi everybody...

everybody's favorite radical marching band, the Infernal Noise Brigade, is hosting a party this July 26th out in Georgetown at Jem Studios.

We're going with a Mobsters of Eastern Europe meets the Mah Jong Parlour's of China circa the 1930's. Dress up or don't, but we will...

The fun will start at the usual time and will end around 4 or 5AM so if you need to come late, DO. and bring your friends; we love the people you know as much as we enjoy you.

i hope i get to see all of you in some capacity that night. i'm sure you'll see me!

Robert Hardgrave Auction.

An Auction to help a local Artist:

Local artist, Robert Hardgrave, has been producing and contributing artwork to the Seattle area for over ten years. His unique, minimalist, graphics have been featured in such publications as Tablet Newspaper and The Seattle Weekly. His work has been featured at several galleries including shows at The Vital 5, Post Alley Art Spaces, Judith Schorr Gallery, COCA, and Bluebottle Art Gallery.

Last January, after 6 months on the waiting list, Robert got the call he had been waiting for. The University of Washington Hospital told him that they had a kidney.Robert lives with a congenital, hereditary kidney disease known as Alport's Syndrome. The operation went perfectly and with in a week Robert was back on the mend. Although the operation proved successful Robert was diagnosed with lymphoma several months later. A CAT scan revealed that the cancer is not only in his throat but also around his new kidney.

The local arts community along with friends and family have joined together to hold on auction on Robert’s behalf. Many artists, art galleries, restaurants, theaters and other establishments, have generously donated to Robert's cause, including, Tablet Newspaper, Balabuste Catering, The Mount Baker Community Club, Intiman Theater, ACT Theater, Sneak Series, Jazz Alley, Coastal Kitchen and 10 Mercer. Local jazz legend Greta Matassa has also generously offered to perform at the auction itself.

The National Transplant Assistant Fund is administering the funds gathered by the sale of art (all of which go towards Roberts health care and living expenses) and extending their 501c3 tax-exempt status to the event, making all donations of art and services tax-deductible. They have pledged to contribute $1,000 to the fund if $5000 is raised during the auction.

slideluck potshow

Casey Kelbaugh is moving to New York soon. This will be his last slideluck potshow.
He writes:

Hey Ebbybody!

You're not going to believe this, but it's time for yet another Slideluck Potshow! We have had ourselves a much-deserved hiatus for the last 6 months, but now let us reconvene-- to eat, drink and look at slides.

Many things have transpired since we gathered at Kevin Kanning's place to watch Rob Zverina's slide tracings of his father's three wives, Lily Warner's documentation of punk parents and Steven Stone's shots from Paradise. I can think of at least one war that has happened since then.

The theme of Slideluck Potshow XX is Mistakes. We've all made our fair share of them. We've paid for them, or are paying for them now. Whether it was an error of judgment, a personality misread, or a lack of forethought, we have all made our blunders. Oftentimes, we find ourselves filled with regret or are even compelled to draw the whip upon our own backs.

Conversely, we find ourselves a scapegoat, diffuse the blame, block it out, cover it up, pretend it never happened. ("Weapons of Mass Destruction? Not sure what you're talking about.") Well, this time we are asking you to celebrate those mistakes, to bring them to light.

Who hasn't done a shoot only to find that they were overexposed, underexposed, out of focus, too wide, too tight, catching flare, or had forgot to load the camera with film? The answer is nobody. Or then there's the time you mixed your chemicals at the wrong dilution, deleted your entire shoot, or ruined a wonderful painting with one ugly, overstated brush stroke. Maybe you created something that at one time you coveted, but now you refuse to take responsibility for. Perhaps you were the model or subject of a great project gone wrong. Or it could be that all of your early work, or even your current work, is one big accident.

Whatever the case may be, we're asking you to share your fuck-ups, or to go out and create some fuck-ups to show us. We want to share your pain, absolve you from guilt, find the beauty among all the ashes and move you forward.

This event is coming up quick (my bad) so you have two weeks to pull something together. For those who attended Slideluck last summer, it will be held in the same lovely backyard on Capitol Hill. Formerly the home of Heike Uhlig, it will be hosted this year by Joe Rodriguez. For those of you who still don't know what slideluck is about, it is a slideshow and a potluck. Please bring good food, strong drink and up to 5 minutes worth of slides. We will have a digital projector as well as a traditional slide projector. Unconventional and multi-media presentations are encouraged.

There will be a couple of grills going for people to barbeque sweet corn, salmon with lemon-caper aioli, pork tenderloin, ginger-lime chicken, italian sausages, shitake mushroom shish kabobs, and veggie burgers with bacon. Once again, we will set the screen up in the backyard and kick back on blankets to watch the show. Unfortunately, you can't bring your dog this year, because two of the housemates have a very impressionable young puppy.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 30TH
7PM POTLUCK
SLIDES BEGIN AT DARK

223 12TH AVE E.
(ONE HALF-BLOCK NORTH OF JOHN ST.
ON CAPITOL HILL. THE SAME LOCATION
AS LAST YEAR'S SUMMER SLIDELUCK.)
