Dancing Dragons @ North Plains (OR) 8/20-22

From Michelle's Artsy Summer email:

Here’s another one that’s new to me, at the same place as Faerieworlds (North Plains, OR - Horning's Hideout). Has a great line up with a lot of Oregon Country Fair music and vaudeville regulars, mixed with some political and environmental stuff as well.

Seattle Tattoo Convention @ Seattle Center (8/20 - 8/22)

I don't have much information about this one except for the links below. But I kind of like the event. Something different.

The Goal of the Seattle Tattoo Convention© is to expose new talent and showcase existing fan favorites; shaping an urban view into the backgrounds, and other creative interests of Artists who focus on painting, sculptures and graffiti. We have several special invited guests from the Hip Hop and Sports communities, and we anticipate a capacity crowd. Our musical backdrop will include mix tapes from the Northwest’s hottest Hip Hop deejays.

Islewilde Community Arts Celebration on Vashon Island (8/20-22)

The 14th Annual Islewilde Community Arts Celebration is a free, three-day arts festival in August featuring a parade, a night-time lantern walk, stilt walking creatures, live music, a children's circus, a late-night cabaret, and a community pageant. These performances are largely generated in workshops in the three weeks preceding the festival taught by professional artist from around the Pacific Northwest.

The photo http://www.islewilde.org/crowd.jpg really made be laugh. Did you know that in 2002 a whopping 18% of Vashon Island kids were not vaccinated? Now you know why. I don't think those people have much interest in sending their kids to a doctor. Those islanders are such a funny bunch of people!

Seattle Hempfest 2004 (1st day)

I love it: tons of smelly hippies, questionable reggae music, amateur drum circles, and funny testimonies about the medical importance of hemp from some potheads, who got busted for smoking weed in the parking lot in front of a police station.

Does too much pot smoking make you maybe stupid? When I was growing up in Germany I knew a bunch of people that seemed to have smoked too much. Their brains had become sponges. They could hardly finish a sentence without forgetting the first half and also they hardly left their apartments - they probably wouldn't have found back home.

I am sure you will find those kinds of people too at this year's Hempfest.

If you are planning on exploring new chemical substances at this year's Hempfest or just get stoned beyond good and evil take my advice: Grab a pen and write on your right hand "How are you?". On your left hand you write "Swedish Hospital, please!"
If your spongy brain has forgotten how to spell "Hospital" you should stay at home. You might not find back home...

Hempfest proudly presents acts like Sir Mix-A-Lot, The KottonMouthKings, and Los Marijuanos right at the Seattle waterfront in one of the city's most beautiful places. Come see over 50 musical acts from the Northwest and beyond, as they throw their full support behind our movement.

Sir Mix-A-Lot plays on Sunday, 7pm.

Seattle Hempfest 2004
Saturday and Sunday
August 21 & 22 - 10AM to 8PM
Myrtle Edwards Park, Pier 70

Rock Star Garage Sale @ Crocodile.

Mathew writes:

This will be a super fun event for a great cause. Please consider including it in Party Volcano.-Thanks , Matthew

Here we go:

As part of an unprecedented effort to increase awareness and support for the regime change at home, proceeds from the sale of items donated by local, regional and national rock stars sold at a garage sale will go to support the Democratic National Committee and progressive candidates nationwide. Participating rock stars include Mark Arm of Mudhoney, members of Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket along with a host of other national and local acts.

About the unconventional approach to the political event says collaborator, Susana Musi, "We refuse to spend another term singing the blues about the economy, the war and human rights abuses, so we are hosting a unique event that is a symbolic gesture of what we aim to achieve this election: to clear out the junk from the White House."

With a little less than three weeks to the sale day, No Vote Left Behind is looking to collect cast-offs from local area celebrities who wish to make individual donations to the organization. No Vote Left Behind is a volunteer-based, political action committee Prospective collaborators, contributors and rock stars are encouraged to visit the organization's website: www.novoteleftbheind.net

Steve Kurtz benefit at ConWorks

John writes:

Dear friends, acquaintances, professional contacts, and creditors:

I have enclosed a press release for the Steve Kurtz benefit at
ConWorks taking place on 8/24. If you have any questions, comments,
suggestions, etc, please feel free to call me or any one of the contacts below. We really hope to have a great turnout, raise money, and have a blast in the
process.

I had the opportunity to meet with Steve Kurtz last week. The guy is
brilliant and very nice to boot. I think its amazing he can maintain a sense
of humor about the whole thing. And though the bio-terrorism charges were
dropped, he is still facing a possible 20 year sentence!

Anyway, I beg you all to help get the word out. This being a very grassroots
effort, it would terrible if we actually lost money on this. Please
forward this email to others who might be interested.

The Orwellian Journey of Dr. Steven Kurtz:

On the morning of May 11, 2004, Dr. Kurtz’s wife, Hope Kurtz, died in
her sleep of cardiac arrest. Police arrived, became suspicious of Kurtz’s art
supplies and called the FBI. Within hours of the FBI’s arrival, Kurtz was
detained as a bioterrorist.

Kurtz, an associate professor in the art department at SUNY Buffalo and
member of Critical Art Ensemble (CAE), makes art addressing the politics of
biotechnology. "Free Range Grains," CAE's latest project, included a mobile
DNA extraction laboratory for testing food products for possible transgenic
contamination.

Although tests have shown Kurtz’s equipment was not used for any illegal
purpose, he and fellow artists were subpoenaed to appear before a federal
grand jury under the USA Patriot Act. Bioterrorism charges against Kurtz
were downgraded and he was charged with four counts of mail and wire fraud
which each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. His colleague
Robert Ferrell, head of the Department of Genetics at the University of
Pittsburgh's School of Public Health, was also indicted. The charges concern
technicalities of how Ferrell helped Kurtz to obtain $256 worth of harmless
bacteria for one of Kurtz’s art projects.

To learn more about this ongoing and extraordinary chain of events, see the
Critical Art Ensemble Defense Fund Web site:

And here is the info about the event itself:
