Events for 8/27 to 9/2/2004

I am changing the format a little bit: fewer events, more editorial work, more freebies, and zero tolerance for bad art and lame events. Please let me know if you like it or not!

Let me start with some corrections and random emails I got this week:
Subterráneo wasn't last week. It is this (actually every fourth) Friday at EN. Then I got a funny email from INB's Mr. Pol pointing out an article in the Seattle Times about the INB ("they bought us dinner and beer... what more can i say?"):

Send an email to larumba1@mac.com if you want to get one of the few free tickets for the Grand Opening of a salsa event called "Fire Lounge" at Kolbeh (#1956 First Ave. So.). Notice also that Voyage moved to COCA next Thursday (9/2, 8:00pm).

Roq La Rue: INSTALLATION

I usually like Roq La Rue shows. But this one seems different:

INSTALLATION

Sponsored by Scion
Opening Friday August 27th 6-10pm
Show ends Sept 4th !

DJ/Liquids provided

Roq La Rue Gallery is pleased to present the work of some of the countries most acclaimed street artists, graphic designers, and fine artists. True to its name, the exhibit also marks the first installation exhibit that the gallery has mounted. None of the pieces will be for sale, but rather auctioned off for charity once the exhibit has finished it's 12 city tour.

Last year Scion launched INSTALLATION, a revolutionary art tour featuring paintings and sculptures created by an unprecedented collective of urban artists. INSTALLATION toured for over a year, visiting a dozen independent galleries and collecting additional artwork along the way at Scion sponsored events and trade shows.

INSTALLATION brought together a truly unique mix: aerosol street artists, fine artists, and graphic designers. The goal of the INSTALLATION tour was to get these artists and their work as much visibility and exposure as possible, and to promote them ahead of the brand and the cars. Scion has since employed many of the artists to work with the company on other projects. Swank, Dez Einswell, and Saber designed flyers, posters, and t-shirts; David Choe created a cartoon for the Scion Magazine; Mister Cartoon is customizing a future Scion project car. The artists and their phenomenal artwork contributed to the credibility of Scion’s image, and in the end all of the profits from the sale of the art went to three special non-profit youth organizations: The HeArt Project, Northwest Youth Corps, and the Nikao Youth Project.

Building on the phenomenal success of the first tour, INSTALLATION 2004/2005 will expand into new cities, cultivating new artists from around the country as Scion makes its cars available across the U.S. While the last year’s art was painted directly onto Scion xA and xB models, this year’s art will be done on three by eight foot canvases. Widely recognized artists like Mear, Andy Howell, Retna, Kenton Parker, Haze, Eklips, and Michael Delahaut have already contributed their talent, and other artists will be painting live at Scion sponsored events throughout the year, expanding the collection as it moves across the country. Once again the aim of INSTALLATION 2004/2005 will be to foreground the artists and promote the integrity of the art. To do so, Scion will bring INSTALLATION 2004/2005 to new galleries and even museums, beginning with the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle in August 2004, eventually culminating in an eBay auction with proceeds benef! iting non-profit youth organizations.

The email came with two pictures of "installation panels" by Retna and Kenton Parker and both are - pardon my French - CRAP.

Sorry, this is a rare thumbs down for Roq La Rue. Wasn't Scion the company that pumped some money into one of the shows at Secluded Alley Works (R.I.P.)? Money from car companies and artists' talent don't seem to match in this project. I have seen better marriages of corporate America and starving artists. For example I like outcome of the threesome with "would-you-please-send-me-another-check" Lucky Strike, CoCA, and The Stranger much better.

If you do decide to go to the show don't repeat my mistake and pick up one of those free Scion bike messenger bags. They are just too heavy for gluing them on walls in your apartment (see Glue Gun Party in the Central District in PV from 3/29/04).

RAKSHA BANDHAN (RAKHI)

I am surprised that nobody from the local Bollywood mafia is trying to exploit this public holiday that has been celebrated in India for centuries:

Raksha Bhandan is celebrated on the full-moon day in the month of Sravana (July-August). The festival of Raksha Bandhan symbolises love, affection and the feeling of brotherhood. On this day, sisters tie an amulet, the Rakhi, around the right wrist of their brothers praying for their long life and happiness. Raksha means protection, and in some places in medieval India, where women felt unsafe, they tied Rakhi round the wrists of men they could count upon, regarding them as brothers. The tradition of tying a thread or "rakhi" around the wrist to convey different feelings has been coming down through the ages since the vedic times.

I guess, I won't get any bugs reported from India on Monday.

Burning Man 8/30-9/6

Finally it's here: Burning Man. Michelle wraps it up perfectly:

OK, y’all know about this. Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Nothing compares to it, really. 30,000 people, the biggest art playground and temporary intentional community anywhere. It’s anything you want it to be, from life-changing magic to a big, loud, dusty pain in the ass.

Am I going? Nope. I have never been to Burning Man and I doubt that I will ever go. Many of my BM friends have asked me what my problem is and that I should definitely go because it's so great, a life changing experience etc. I don't honestly know why I don't want to go. Maybe it's because I don't like camping and the thought of spending a week without having a shower but with plenty of people that are heavily on drugs, and eager men with spermatophores hanging from their siphons as well as females willing to accept sperm packets from them just doesn't appeal to me. "How can you say that especially if you have never been to Burning Man?" they usually ask.

I haven't been to Siberia either but I sure do have some opinions about it. I also have this hunch that BM has peaked out a little bit. Maybe that happened already some years ago when BM HQ decided to decrease the size of the Burning Man that is being burnt every year step by step. Another indicator is the Capitol Hill goggles supply situation. Three years ago I went to the army shop on Pike across the street from Retail Therapy and ask for goggles. Their response was: "I am sorry, we are out of Burning Man Goggles." I think that was the defining moment, in which I decided that I wouldn't want to go to a Disney Hippie Land.

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing bad about Burning Man and I am encouraging everybody to go and check it out. - Same with Siberia.

For all of you loyal PV readers that are on their way to Nevada I wish you a safe trip. Take care.

Bumbershoot Gala

I ran into K.D. at Wissam's and Wazhma's birthday party last Sunday and she told me something I didn't know about Bumbershoot. Every year there is a Bumbershoot Gala in the week before Bumbershoot starts and it's for free. She writes:

Can you stand it?
Bumbershoot is almost here again.
Summer days are dwindling down to a precious few.

It also means that the Bumbershoot Art Gala is nigh.
It will be held on Wed. September 1st,starting at 6pm. Art,music, food and wine. And it is FREE and open to the public.

I will be part of the "GirlieFunShow" this year(http://www.girliefunshow.com/)
During the Gala, myself and 3 brave friends(Lynn,Nova and Jonelle) will be dressed as vintage Las Vegas Showgirls in headdresses that I created for the show. Each headress is a particular "Girly Folly"; Shoes,Sweets,Jewels and Gin. (I wonder which one I will be wearing? Hmmmmmm.)

There will also be a stage show featuring the music of Bethurum, the vocal stylings of the wonderful Miss Sylvia O'Stayformore and the luscious Vargas Girls. And it is FREE! Yes, a part of Bumbershoot that is still free. Will wonders never cease.

I hope to see some of your dear faces there.
xoxo
K.D.

There is another way if you want to get in for free. The Three Imaginary Girls are giving away Tickets to the Bumbershoot Afterparty to the P.O.T.U.S.A.:

TIG Party: Win Tickets to the Bumbershoot Afterparty!
Enter the TIG drawing to win prizes & tickets to the Presidents of the USA Bumbershoot Afterparty, Friday September 3rd at the Mirabeau Room! The party starts at 10p and will feature a night-long DJ set by Three Imaginary Girls. Think of it as the only place to have your watercooler conversations about Bumbershoot's "Hometown Throwdown" with the Presidents of the United States of America, Death Cab for Cutie, and United State of Electronica

I don't care too much for the Presidents and their music. I do know that they hate it when you don't spell out their full name (fucking snobs!).

- Before, During, After at the new Forgotten Works (300 S. Washington).
- The Dimpled and Whiskered Future Show @ Mnemonic Gallery (619 Western Ave).
