Book Sale @ Sand Point

PV's CDO (Chief Discipline Officer) Andrew flies in from Thailand for this sale. He gives us an advance preview:

If you love books, this is an enjoyable event. Friends of the Seattle Public Library sponsors this sale twice per year. There are about 100,000 books, most of which are donated but some are old library books. Most books are priced at $1.00. There is a large "better books" section where books are priced as marked-still very reasonably-and a rare and old books section which occasionally has some neat finds.

Books are arranged in rough categories-fiction, travel, cooking, foreign language, etc-but beyond that, it's a jumbled mess with large boxes of books crammed under the tables waiting for more room to be made. That's actually half the fun-it's sort of like picking through books at a giant garage sale.

For planning purposes:

Friday is Member's Preview for members of Friends of the Library. Membership costs $15.00 for one year and allows you advanced crack at the Fall and Spring book sales. You are, however, limited to buying 25 books at this preview. You can purchase a membership at the door. I think it's worth the membership price if you are a book fanatic and plan to go to both sales during the year. You get first pick and, although it's crowded, it's not nearly as bad as the overwhelming crowds on Saturday.

Saturday is the first day that the sale is open to the general public. Generally, Saturdays are a madhouse-especially in the morning and early afternoon. It can be hard to move through the aisles there are so many people packed in. I, personally, find it too claustrophobic with the crowds to bother going on Saturday.

Sunday is the second day that the sale is open to the general public. It's still cro! wded but usually not nearly as bad as on Sunday. Also on Sunday, they run specials-e.g. all books half price, etc. And if you stick around to the very end, sometimes they will even bargain down further in the rare books room. The downside is that although there are a lot of books still left, they have been picked over. Still, I've found some real treasures on Sunday at bargain prices.

Sand Point/Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Bldg. 30
Friday: Member's Preview 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm (Membership available at door for $15)
Saturday: Public Sale 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sunday: Public Sale 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Helpful Hint: Bring a comfortable backpack or large bag for hauling books around. They don't provide bags or boxes at the door, so it's really best to bring your own.

Ayesha is a middle-aged woman whose life centers around her son,
Saleem-- a gentle, dreamy, 18 year-old in love with Zubeida. Ayesha and her
son live in the village of Charkhi, Punjab, Pakistan. Ayesha, a widow,
maintains her home from her late husband's pension and also by giving
Qur'an lessons to young girls. The story begins in 1979, in a Pakistan
dictated under President General Zia-ul-Haq's martial law. In a few
months the country will become a state ruled by Islamic Jurisprudence.
Saleem becomes intensely involved with a group of Islamic fundamentalists.
Ayesha and Zubeida immensely worry for him. The plot thickens when Sikh

The Seattle Phonographers Union @ On the Boards Studio Theatre

Another recommendation by James Whetzel:

On the Boards Studio Theater, 100 West Roy on Queen Anne Hill, 8 pm,
$0-$5 sliding scale donation.

The Seattle Phonographers Union improvises collectively, solo, and in
small groups with unprocessed field recordings made next door and around
the world.

Sound sources include distantly rasping pine trees, rushing rivers,
buzzing wasps, vibrating machinery, touch football in the park, gulls
alighting into the sky, and other overlooked ambiances of everyday life as
well as rugged audio from the recent protests at the RNC in New York.

The line-up: Steve Barsotti, Christopher DeLaurenti, Dale Lloyd, Perri
Lynch, Toby Paddock, Steve Peters, and Jonathan Way as well as a solo
set from special guest acclaimed sound artist Bernhard Gal
(Vienna/Berlin) who is touring the United States.

This extract by Francois Couture (All Music Guide) about the recent
Phonographers Union cd, Live on Sonarchy Radio (Accretions), offers more
detail:

"With an acute sense of listening, the artists are combining their
recordings (not mere sounds but chunks of space, as the microphone picks up
more than just a birdsong or a creaking floor), creating a gripping
aural symphony where the listener is left free of linking sounds together
or imagining scenes that would accomodate all the sounds heard at one
particular moment. More free-form and easy-flowing than musique
concrète, much more concrete than experimental electronica, this music speaks
to the mind and the soul, as some of these sounds are very familiar, but
their combinations evoke surreal situations."

The Seattle Phonographers Union at On the Boards Studio Theatre,
Sunday, 8pm $5

Tuesday, 9/21

Vancouver International Film Festival (9/23 - 10/8)

The 23rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival will be held September 23 - October 8, 2004. The festival began in 1982. More than 150,000 people attended 500 screenings of over 300 films from more than 50 countries. In 2003 there were a record 261 feature and mid-length films, plus 85 shorts.

The broad spectrum of fiction and nonfiction films from around the world is divided into the following sections:

• Cinema of Our Time—Featuring the best new cinema from around the world. Last year 61 films from 29 countries were presented, 17 of which were North American or International Premieres.
• Canadian Images—the biggest showcase of Canadian film in the world. At VIFF 2003 there were 95 Canadian films, including a record 35 features, four mid-lengths and 58 shorts.
• Dragons and Tigers: The Cinemas of East Asia—the largest annual exhibition of East Asian films outside Asia; 61 films were screened last year, including three world premieres, 26 international premieres, eight North American premieres, six Canadian premieres, and one English-Canadian premiere.
• Nonfiction Features - Vancouver film fest-goers love documentary films – in 2002 documentaries won both popularity-based awards, while last year another, The Corporation, was named the Most Popular Canadian film. The 2003 program included a record 68 feature-length documentaries, including three world pre! mieres, eight international premieres, seven North American premieres and 14 Canadian premieres.
• Spotlight on France—This annual sidebar celebrates the unique achievements of France’s strong national cinema.
• Archival Series—Last year's series, Los Angeles Plays Itself, provided a look at the unique relationship between the world's most famous film city and it's dominant industry.

In addition to our main sections, for younger filmgoers the VIFF offers the High School Outreach Program. Now in it's sixth year, this program provides a unique opportunity for Vancouver-area students to experience the best that international cinema has to offer. We also classify a number of other films for younger viewers to attend. Please check the Classified Films page for further information, or ask for more details at the box office.
