Events for 9/24 to 9/30/2004

This week's edition is a little bit late due to technical difficulties. Some parts of this list have been generated using Culture Theory's event list generator and database and I was running into some problems. Either way, we are working on it and you shouldn't see any differences in content or format.

The award for the creepiest event goes to ConiFur (Puyallup Fair can't win every year!). Also No Vote Left Behind is hosting some really interesting shows. But that's pretty much it.

Friday, 9/24
7:00 PM? ConiFur @ Sheraton Tacoma Convention Center, Wa (9/24-9/36)
8:00 PM Frankenocchio @ Empty Space Theater
9:00 PM No Vote Left Behind: Hedwig v. El Vez, Purty Mouth @ Sunset Tavern.
9:00 PM Calendar Girls @ The Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater
9:00 PM THE FOURTHCITY NATIONAL LAPTOP BATTLE CHAMPIONSHIPS @ Chop Suey
9:00 PM? Mojo @ Lava Lounge.
1:00 AM Decibel Festival afterparties @ Oseao

Saturday, 9/25
9:00 PM Discoparavaaz Anniversary party @ Cat walk
9:00 PM Subterráneo @ EN Restaurant

Sunday, 9/26
6:00 PM Poetry in Wartime @ Richard Hugo House

Tuesday 9/28
7:30 PM SexLife Lounge & SexLife LIVE @ CHAC

Thursday, 9/30
7:00 PM Another Hundred Artists @ Mt. Baker Community Center

Friday, 9/24

ConiFur @ Sheraton Tacoma Convention Center, Wa

The GMP has broght my attention to this unusual event:

The Pacific Northwest's own Furry convention, ConiFur,
is happening this September 24-26 at the Sheraton Tacoma hotel.
GMP's own Fractal Squirrel and Rocky Raccoon are both going to be
there, and it would be great to see more GMP regulars in their furry
glory.

I think it’s kind of creepy:

What would a convention be without things to do?

We have got a full program for you this year! There will be clinics, panels, readings, gaming, two dances, a masquerade, Furry Pictionary, the Ice Cream Social, and a whole lot more. Below we have a list of some of our featured events. Scroll past the list and the contacts section to see the current version of the events schedule.

Furry Pictionary
Our perenial favorite returns this year for more zany fun. See what outrageous things wind up on the big sketch pads this time. Full audience participation is not just encouraged, it's required! We have furry artists up front with a big sketch pad and a marker. Their mission: get the audience to say the secret word by sketching and gesticulating, but no talking allowed.

Furry Dance!
Break out your dancing shoes and get ready to shake your tail all night long. Come dance Friday night and Saturday night away! Dance in your fursuit or boogie in your mundane wear. Everyone's welcome to enjoy the tunes.

Cartoons & cereal

Come on down to the Event Theatre Saturday morning to see the collection of old favorites and rare animated treats assembled for your viewing pleasure. Munch on cereal. Enjoy some cereal. And wear your jammies if you want!

Frankenocchio @ Empty Space Theater

Joshua writes:

Frankenocchio is back! The tragic tale of a divine boy toy opens Sept 24 and has a one month run at the Empty Space Theater in Fremont. Brian Kooser, the master mind behind all that nefarious beauty, will star in it again.

This time it is being directed by Scot Auguston of Sgt. Rigsby fame.
Promises to be different enough to be worth seeing again, and still
an amazing treat if you have not seen it yet. Presented by Double Duck
Productions and Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab at the Empty Space Theater.

More about the show:

The smash hit of 2003 returns on a grand scale to The Empty Space Theatre. Frankenocchio is a dark and whimsical theatrical extravaganza composed entirely of Bunraku style puppets designed by Monkey Wrench Theatre’s Brian Kooser and live music from Seattle’s legendary Circus Contraption. At a seedy, run-down circus, Benevecchio, a kind-hearted circus geek and hopeless drunkard, prays for a son to keep him company in his old age. The Lord responds to Benevecchio's pious plea by cutting the strings to his favorite boy-toy Frankenocchio, sending this divine marionette plunging to earth. Upon impact, Frankenocchio's head and body are sent off in separate directions and begin the search to reunite. The quest of one head to find one body has never been so funny, so disgusting, so insane, so touching, so sad.

Joshua has compiled a whole list of puppet show for this fall:

You folks are known puppet sympathizers!
This is to inform you of a conflageration of events
happening in Seattle this fall all involving puppets!
All these shows are at least worth your effort and
most of them are really great!

This Land opens thurs Sept 16-Oct 16 at the
Hugo House on Capitol Hill, 1634 11th Ave.

A show for actors and puppets inspired by and set to the music of Woody Guthrie. It has that timeless quality truth usually does.

Written and Directed by Greg Carter (no relation to the
Carters). Greg Carter teaches at cornish and first debuted
this play at the Heart of the Beast in Minnesota. Presented by
Strawberry Theatre Workshop

Letters to the Editor

Bally Sagoo Show @ Showbox (9/3/2004)

Wow..You sure called this one wrong.

We had to laugh at your "preview" of the Bally Sagoo thing. It was definitely spendy, but then so is Chebi when he's in town ( I'll pay it for him anytime too), and this guy gave Chebi lessons.

The show was as good as it gets and I have never seen more people on the dance floor there..EVER. Bally is good...really good. Too many teenagers and drunk Indians, but hey, if its not drunk Indians its 'drunk everybodyelse'.

I still love partyvolcano, but you got a little too hip with the last one. PLEEZE .. ..oh..and the I Heart Shiva guys are great, they opened the show..why the slam on that too

Humor Monger

Dear Mr Monger, or may I call you Humor?

I might not always be right with my recommendations but with all respect I believe in the case of Bally Sagoo at the Showbox on 9/3/2004 we did make the right call and (hopefully) helped saving our readers money, and maybe even prevented damage to their health.

Here is what I have heard from two experts, whose opinions I value very much:
The first three tracks of the show were brilliant but after that it quickly went downhill as Bally Sagoo's ghetto buddies overdubbed the music with "Bally Sagoo is in the house!" for the rest of the evening. I asked whether telephone numbers of dentists in Renton were projected onto the DJs (see last Panjabi MC concert) and I was told that no intrusive advertisement was injected into the show.

And what about fights? Of course there were fights. What would be a show with Indian dance music without meaningless fights between young, drunk Indians? I am wondering what they argue about? Their outfits?

Best,

Don Volcano.
