Events for 9/10 to 9/16/2004

Burning Man is over (see Ron Jeremy's Cold Lava report) and suddenly events are pouring into our inboxes again. My favorites for this week are the Roq la Rue opening on Friday and the Independent South Asian Film Festival Opening Gala Night on Thursday.

Also the Three Imaginary Girls are pointing out that No Vote Left Behind shows all go on sale at 10am today, September 10th (http://www.novoteleftbehind.net/news_20040910.php).

Last but not least I want to mention that I've got some feedback about the recent changes I have made. It's funny: some people like the new format (shorter, more comments) others don't. It turns out that I spend the same time with the new format because I have to write more instead of copying emails together. Maybe there is a middle ground...

Have a great week!

Ray Caesar and Amy Hill @ Roq La Rue

Let's forget about my last Roq La Rue downgrade (although friends of mine that did go confirmed it was bad) and take a fresh look at what they are offering this week: This will be a great show! Roq La Rue showed some of Ray Caesar's work at their anniversary show earlier this year and I liked it. They are a little bit creepy, though. But they are affordable.

Caesar's digital images are not as good as paintings by Mark Ryden or Marion Peck. But you also don't have to pay $8000 for a Ryden reproduction or $1500 for an original painting from Peck where you can see Jesus if you stare at a pig long enough (I should have bought that one). If I remember correctly Caesar's prints will be sold for $600 for one print of limited editions of 20 prints.

Roq La Rue
Presents
Ray Caesar and Amy Hill

Opening Friday September 10th 6-10pm- Runs through October 7th

Roq La Rue is very pleased to present an extraordinary show of the work of two artists for the month of September, Ray Caesar (Toronto, Canada) and Amy Hill (New York).

Ray Caesar creates fantastical, grimly hopeful and gravely whimsical images of wizened children who radiate an enigmatic serenity. Sprouting bio-mechanical limbs and appendages, the figures are otherworldly, a melding of sci fi fantasy, lush landscapes, and Victorian sensibilities. Working for 17 years in the Art and Photography Department of The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, Ray documented things such as child abuse, surgical reconstruction ,psychology and animal research. Ray acknowledges this time to be the birthplace of his imagery, and considers his paintings to be the creation of dreams for those who didn’t get a chance to live theirs.

Ray’s work is astonishing in the fact it is all digitally created, most people assume they are looking at paintings due to the seamless blending and “painterly quality” of the work as well as it’s unique emotional impact. Creating models in a 3D modeling software he then wraps them in painted and manipulated texture maps. Each model is set up with an invisible skeleton that allows him to pose each figure in it’s 3D environment.

Ray will have a selection of his incredible limited edition prints on exhibit, as well as three new prints never before seen. We are very honored to be hosting Ray’s work and foresee an incredible art career for him. This is his 2nd art exhibit.

Amy Hill paints with a notoriously difficult Dutch Renaissance technique, using formality in the execution and opting for non-conventionality in her subject matter. In her newest series, Amy has painted a series of classic movie monsters as businessmen in suits. Earthy, luminous portraits are painted in tones perfect for the discriminating boardroom, as repulsive monsters are lovingly painted and renamed with “normal” societially accepted names. Funny, yet thought provoking, the initial assumption of “businessmen as monsters” begins to expand as the viewer considers what the artist might actually be implying.

Amy will be showing her entire series of oil on panel Monster paintings. This is her first show at Roq la Rue.

The Recycled Art Show @ Ballard's Art Walk

Diane (Ruby Re-Usable, the Dumpster Diving Diva) writes:

MY dearest PV:

Enjoyed your new format, it is the editorial wit that keeps me reading every week, wishing that I could actually attend some of the events (I live in "Olympia," and I don't get out much....I live vicariously through Party Volcano and the Stranger).

However, I will be heading north to participate in this event, and hope that maybe you will consider listing it, even if it is in "Ballard".

love, etc Ruby

Let's see:

CELEBRATE ARTS IN BALLARD!
Presented by Arts Ballard and The ReStore
September 11 - October 2

The Recycled Art Show
Artists' Reception at Sev Shoon and BallardWorks on Saturday, September 11, 6-9PM

We will have a two-part exhibit a show juried by Marita Dingus and an Invitational with work by several artists who use recycled/found materials as an integral part of their _expression. Participating artists include Marita Dingus, Ross Palmer Beecher, Diane Kurzyna, Barbara Barnes Allen, Joan Stuart Ross, Mary Molineaux, Kathy Glowen, Ruthie Tomlinsen, and Harriett Sanderson. In addition to poetry reading by author J. Glenn Evans, the Offbeat Jazz Ensemble and the Arts Ballard Festival Choir will be performing during the opening reception starting 7PM.

Art'fisk will be an evening of music, performance, visual, and FilmFest to celebrate the arts throughout Ballard. For more information, visit www.artsballard.org.

In my opinion Ballard is an excellent location for showing art made of recycled trash. It fits very well into the overall theme of the "art" that is usually displayed in "Ballard": TRASH. The only exceptions are The Recycled Art Show and Amada Luna (which now has a new name). Yesterday I saw a pretty interesting piece from the same artist (Jenny soandso), that will show her work at the furniture shop on Ballard Ave.

Poolsides & Landscapes Art Show @ Retail Therapy

Pool Sides and Landscapes are painting collaborations between two great friends and amazing painters: Lane Gwinn and Barb Jaksa. Both have been accomplished painters for over 20 years.

Some of you may be familiar with Lane's work from her previous show last fall at Retail Therapy. Her pool side paintings are so breathtaking they give the feeling of a warm flooding sea surrounding you.

You can get some sneak peeks of previous pieces at
http://www.lanegwinn.com or http://www.museo.cc/lg.html

Barbara's abstract landscape paintings have all been influenced by her many roadside travels. The show will mainly feature pieces in striking reds and oranges with incredible texture "...depositing emotions and fossilizing memories in the form of paintings."

Please join us for their opening reception this Tuesday September the 14th at 8pm. Wine and snacks will be provided as always and everyone is welcome.

Classical Dance and other live performance

Special presentation by International Tabla Player Vishal Nagar

Dress up. Come. Discover. Celebrate – and be transformed by this magical night of cultural exploration.

Farah organized the film festival. She writes:

Dear Don Volcano,

If you want to actually witness a Rakhi ceremony, come to the Opening Gala of Seattle’s 1st Independent South Asian Film Festival on Sept 16. The Cinema Room will be showing short films all night - one such film “The Divide” has a complete Rakhi ceremony taking place in the privacy of an authentic Indian family living in England.

Also in the Cinema Room: Bhangra radio station provides humor and shoulder bopping on a daily basis, Indian engineers in Tokyo reminisce the simple life of their village, and a Pakistani woman goes about her daily routines including bathing - a rare appearance of bare brownness on film.

Consider the Opening Gala as a Bumbershoot – with live bands, art, DJs, film festival – but South Asian style.

Farah Nousheen

Not everything from India is on my current downgrade list. This one actually sounds like a good deal. Ten bucks is not much money for an opening gala and Wissam has a lot of experience in throwing parties and events like this. I know Farah more as a DJ but I was impressed by her merciless downgrade of the SIFF Gala movie this year. She seems to really care about not wasting everybody's time and money (in contrast to the SIFF Gala organizers) by picking the best movies she can find. Two thumbs up!

There is also an opportunity to win free tickets:

To win two tickets to a festival movie of your choice, email
info@tasveer.org the correct answer to the following question by this
Friday (9/10) 5pm:

Which actress debuted in a Satyajit Ray film and who is now an
award-wining director? Name the actress and her debut film.

You may also want to listen in to Barbie's radio show at 3-5pm, today, on KBCS 91.3FM (www.kbcs.fm), which is streaming a live interview with Farah. They will be talking about the 1st Annual South Asian Film Festival and will also giveaway free tickets.

Tickets are for $15 door, $10 adv.

Cold Lava

Space Virgins Cocktail Party: 9/3/2004, Black Rock City, Nevada

PV special correspondent Ron Jeremy writes:

As you spend the entire year shelling out your hard-earned stock option dividends to attend Burning Man fund raising parties, you may occasionally wonder exactly what these funds are being raised for. The answer is so that these very same groups can afford to throw their Burning Man fund lowering parties once they actually arrive on the playa. Case in point, the Space Virgins Friday Night Cocktail Party, last week at Burning Man, in Black Rock City, Nevada.

What seemed like thousands of dollars worth of quality booze was poured for all comers at what was once again THE party of the year at Burning Man. Of course, now that Burning Man has basically become a renaissance faire -- a small group of obsessed hobbyists dedicated to dressing in period costumes and re-enacting the glories of a bygone era, all for the benefit of vast throngs of annoying yuppies in street clothes, perhaps "THE party of the year at Burning Man" is not saying much. But I digress.

The nearly full-size replica of the Athenian Parthenon, backed by the pink, fuzzy, and inviting Slumber Dome, provided a perfect venue for the event. Despite fears of a harsh buzz-kill, temperatures in the low 40's did not diminish the crowd or the fun at this mostly outdoors shindig. The winds stayed calm enough not to bring the expected white-out dust storms down on the party, and the cold temperatures were bravely met with increased alcohol consumption.

The only downgradeable aspect to the party was the Alien Monkey Love Nest Extreme Sex Act Midnight Talent Show. Now don't get me wrong, I like extreme sex act midnight talent shows as much as the next guy -- come to think of it, I probably like them more -- but this kind of thing just attracts the wrong element to a cocktail party. I.e. horny drunken frat boys, and pervy old men wearing t-shirts with no pants. I mean seriously, bringing more horny drunken frat boyz and pervy old men wearing t-shirts with no pants to an event at Burning Man is like bringing patchouli to an Oracle Gathering. But the talent show must have provided adequate masturbatory release for the audience, as even this influx of testosterone did not in the end hurt the party.

Two thumbs up.
