Events for 9/25/03 to 10/2/03

Thursdays have become PV’s blind spot. Week after week it has been fallen off the list because of work related deadlines etc. So I am switching the schedule from Fridays to Thursdays instead of Thursdays to Wednesdays. Maybe this will help. My favorite for this week is Café Casablanca. Check it out!
And also don’t miss Andrew’s Cold Lava report from the Puyallup Fair 2003.

French night @ Barca

Yep, that was yesterday and we missed it. Wissam was inviting you to an evening in French:

A Jeudi,

MEGAPHONE Opening

J-Justice writes:

Yeah, well there is a hushhush little event happening this Friday night.

Have you heard of MEGAPHONE? No? Well you will. MEGAPHONE is a new underground club being opened by the fantastic peeps at the CHAC (http://www.capitolhillarts.com/) and Static FActory (http://www.staticfactory.org). That's right, they are opening a fully licensed bar with a soundsystem, dancefloor and everything!

And this Friday night is the first party.

It's not the official, "Lets open the doors and wave the banners" party.
It's more of the unofficial, "Hey, you wanna be the first people to boogie down and booze up at what's sure to be a busy, new spot on the hill before anyone else?" kinda thing.

SunTzu Sound will be providing the tunes from about 10 until ????
We'll have special guest Jayson Powell on percussion and plenty of free passes to give away for our new night at The Baltic Room.

No secret passwords necessary. Just show up and be ready to have fun.

MEGAPHONE is below the CHAC at 1621 12th Ave. near the East Presinct.

OTO Fall Festival Fundraiser @ Queen Anne Masonic Temple

If you are looking for something mellow, but completely out-of–the-box to do, this is the event for you.

The Ordo Templi Orientis is an esoteric magic organization formed around the turn of the last century. Lots of intricate rituals, raising of various demons and angels, and association with infamous oddball Aleister Crowley. In short, good clean fun.

What’s so interesting about the modern participants in the OTO is that one gets the feeling that they are pursuing a very personalized form of spiritual practice, devoid of fundamentalist cant. Hence an intricate ritual to “raise” a “demon” or “angel” can be seen as way of tapping into inchoate psychic energies within oneself—not a literal raising of an actual demon or angel. It has strong shades of Carl Jung’s archetypes.

Not that there will be any demon raising at this event.&nbs! p; More like a wine tasting, a raffle, hebrew bingo, a play, and various vendors selling magic stuff. But folks are friendly and if you are at all curious about the modern day magic practice, people will be happy to answer your questions. If you are willing to talk to people, it can make for a very interesting evening.

Queen Anne Masonic Temple, 1608 4th Ave West, 5pm to 11:30pm, Tix at the door: $12, Tix in advance: $10 available by contacting Onyieh at babalon93@hotmail.com

CAFE CASABLANCA At Patti Summers' Cabaret Night Club

Two weeks ago I ran into Russ. He was telling me that he would have a Casablanca theme fundraiser for Patti Summers' Cabaret Night Club. I suggested that some people in Nazi uniforms should show up at the end of the evening and shut down the place – like in the movie. Russ liked the idea but I am afraid he hasn’t found enough people who like dressing up as Nazis. If you have had the honor of being invited to one of Russ’s parties (office party - "dress to get hired or dress to get fired", Halloween, mask party etc.) you already know that this will be a great event - with or without Nazis.

From all over a war-torn continent they came, refugees drawn from all walks of life, seeking a way out, an escape to freedom. The place where they gathered, to plot, to dream, or just to wait for whatever lay in store, was a world of its own...

--Rick

This note from Rick came in last minute:

"You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh..."

I bet you didn't know that I could sing, did ya? Well, there are a few other things I'd like to tell ya about which you may not be aware of...

You'll remember that I'm throwing a party this coming Saturday, titled "Cafe Casablanca," at Patti Summers' Cabaret Nightclub in Seattle's
Pike Place Market Annex, on Pike Street just off 1st Avenue, downstairs, and across from the pig. The party starts at 9:00 PM.

But what you didn't know is that the "Sam" character starring with The Usual Suspects will be played by Casey MacGill. Or that there will be special appearances by Janet Rayor and her accordionist Steve Rice, and by The Lively & Vivacious Miss Cheryl Serio. Or that DJ EZ Action will be lending a hand on this as well.

And what you also didn't know is that the $10 cover charge is a firm admission price, which includes one well drink, and that it's well drinks that will be going for three bucks each. (All others are the regular price.)

This is for a worthy cause, which is saving a local jazz club, and ten bucks, three bucks--why, these kinds of sums ain't worth a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

Now get outta here! I gotta lot of work to do before Saturday night, and what I've got to do you can't do, where I go you can't follow. I'll be busy arranging for some letters of transit and trying to make sure that "Cafe Casablanca" is all that it's cooked up to be.

I hope to see ya there. And bring your pals along too. Anyone who pays the ten smackers, and who's dressed right, and is at least 21 years of age with ID, is more than welcome to Cafe Casablanca.

Here's looking at you, kid!

Dorkbot @ CoCA

It's dorkbot time, again. Kate Seekings and Kathy Cain host this monthly meeting loosely centered around people doing weird things with electricity. It's gotten quite a buzz and deservedly so. PV recommends this event. Here's what Kate has to say:

Swingin’ sensors! It’s fall already, and time for regularly-scheduled dorkbot-sea programming to resume at CoCA on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1ST at 7.30 PM. Whether you’re an artist, a performer, a student, an engineer, a mad scientist, an introvert, a show-off or simply looking for something fascinating to do next Wednesday night, if you’re interested in the creation of electronic art in the broadest sense of the term, dorktoberfest is for you. And it’s FREE! This month, Seattle artist and weaver LAURA MACCARY and her father and collaborator, Spokane-based sculptor, poet and electronics expert LAWRENCE MACCARY will be talking about the hows and whys of their “Dialectric” series of interactive artworks, which all consist of an electronic component woven of conductive or resistive material and a circuit designed around the weaving; TOBY PADDOCK will explore “Magnetic senso! rs for the unwashed and lazy: using Hall Effect devices without learning very much”… inside a magnetic sensor is a lot of science, but outside they’re small, cheap, rugged, have few wires and are easy to get along with. Local experimental music duo PINKY & REX will discuss their re-contextualizing of thrift-store toys, toy instruments and electronic oddities to create symphonic walls of sound. PINKY & REX will also rock the house once the presentations are over so you can hear their strange appropriations in action. Be at CoCA on 10/01, or be beerless, artless, musicless and tragically undorky. Please RSVP as usual to dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org – it helps us make sure the keg is big enough.

CoCA, 1420 11th Ave (between Pike and Union on Capitol Hill), 7:30pm, Free--but they request that you RSVP for planning purposes to dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org

JAG/O Design Studio's Artwalk Open House

It’s Art Walk Thursday again. O - Design Studio and JAG Design are inviting you to the 1020 First Open House, featuring resident and guest artists for the First Thursday Seattle Artwalk:

We are looking forward to yet another open house at the 1020 First Avenue South building, and encourage all that have visited to come back and see our latest work, as well as the work of the other guest and resident artists.

For those who have never visited our space, we invite you to come down after the Artwalk in Pioneer Square and check out work from local emerging artists and explore our studio building. Multiple studios will be open, as well as a shared gallery space on the third floor featuring resident and guest artists.

Our building is much more relaxed and casual than the galleries, and usually turns into a great intimate party...all are welcome and we hope you will make our building a regular stop for the Seattle Artwalk, held on the first Thursday of the month.

Cold Lava

9/20: Party Volcano’s CDO does The Puyallup

Last Saturday, PV’s Chief Discipline Officer, Andrew Havlis, and his charming assistant D.O., Sedora DeBondt, went to The Puyallup Fair. Here’s Andrew’s highlights:

The most interesting food items that we saw, were deep fried Twinkies and Snickers bars. I’m not joking. They dip the Snickers bar or Twinkie in batter and then plunge it into a deep fat frier. The Snickers bar looked like a deep fried turd on a stick. I didn’t have the guts to try one.

The most interesting encounter was speaking with a 16 year old girl who was a member of FFA (Future Farmers of America), an organization similar to 4-H, for high school kids. This was the second year in FFA for this young woman and the second pig she had raised. It was a lovely pig—about 260 pounds—calm and gentle. In fact it slept the whole time we talked to the girl, even when I petted it’s snout through the bars of its pen. Very cute.

The girl explained to us that pigs are fairly intelligent creatures—the kids in FFA all teach their pigs to obey simple commands like “come” and “stay” in order to show them off in the ring.! She would lay on top of her pig when it was sleeping to establish a closer bond—which facilitated its training. The members of FFA bring their animals around to the various fairs for show and at one of the smaller fairs the animals are typically auctioned off for slaughter—but not at The Puyallup which doesn’t host auctions.

Sedora asked the girl if she found it difficult knowing that this creature that she had raised and bonded with, was destined to be killed.

She said, “Well, the first animal you raise and then sell, it’s hard. You know that your pig is going to die the next day. But then you get a check for $600, and it’s not so bad.”

We thought that was very honest.

Pierre's House Cooling Party (9/20/2003)

Dear Party Volcano:

Does it really make sense to publish reviews of the secret PV inner circle cabal parties that the great unwashed Stranger article reading masses are not allowed to attend? I mean, don't you fear that if they find out about the conspiracy to keep them out of all the good parties, that they may rise up in revolt or something? Then again, if, as you suggest, they do not even have the guts to attend an 80's prom because they do not know anybody, then I suppose we probably do not have to worry about armed insurrection.

That being said -- Pierre's House Cooling Party rates a "not bad" on the Pmatt scale. Pluses: good music and lots of bare breasts (and I am not just talking about Eric's pecs either). Minus: nothing but tequila with no mixers left at the end of the evening. The highlight of the night for me though was introducing PV to a lovely young schmetterling from the land of lederhosen. I left the party with a feeling of accomplishment, knowing that with the way you two were chatting away and gazing into each other's eyes, you could not possibly have separated before fruhstuck time.

-- Pmatt

Dear Pmatt (and that’s Matt with a silent ‘P’ for our readers that are interested in proper pronunciation),

Pierre’s House Cooling Party was indeed a private party with “Gold Lava” status. Writing about it and inviting 1200 people was a no-no. But I don’t know whether it was such a big secret. At least Seattle’s Burning Man community knew about it and even two coworkers of mine somehow managed to get to this lovely party. Thanks for introducing me to the Schmetterling. She turned out to be from Pennsylvania, though. Her German was excellent and only slightly distorted by that Tequila, that everybody was happily drinking once the beer ran out. It was a fun party!
