SCENE CREAMERS @ THE VERA PROJECT

MORE ABOUT FRIDAY's SHOW:

As the Spiv of the Ulyssean Jihad, Ian Svenonius spent the late '80s
and early '90s fronting what was perhaps the most conceptually
flawless band of all time, the incomparable Nation of Ulysses;
later, he took the revolution to the pulpit with the religious
fervor of the sadly defunct Make-Up. And what thanks does he get? He
sits idly by the wayside while a bunch of fucking Swedes cop his
style, his sound, his very soul... and reap fame and fortune in the
process. SCENE CREAMERS, His new outfit with former Make-Up mate
Michelle Mae, takes the Gospel Yeh-Yeh theology of the Make-Up and
injecting it with a bit of that MC5 blues howl. Only a lot better
than the preceding (and terribly inept) description affords.
Following their set, Scene Creamers will DJ into the wee All Ages
hours.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3
Loss Leader and the Vera Project Present
SCENE CREAMERS (a.k.a. WEIRD WAR)

REMOTE opening in NYC.

Do you remember Meghan Trainor? But you might remember Party Volcano's strange obsession for the Trainor Piñata in 2002. Meghan moved to New York City last year and is having an opening featuring artists from Seattle including Emily Hall, who writes for the Stranger:

Emerging Artists of the Pacific Northwest

Jite Agbro
Neal Bashor
Sarah Bergmann
Romson Bustillo
Leslie Clague
Christian French
Mary Gross
Emily Hall, essay
Sarah Morris
Meghan Trainor
Blair Wilson

Does regional aesthetic identity exist or even matter? How does an identity change when viewed from outside the context that created it? Remote views
these questions through the lens of an emerging Seattle art scene that came
of age during the economic and artistic explosion of the late 1990s.

...

The late 90s boom fed a nervous, feverish explosion in the arts haunted by the shadow of the coming crash. This vast body of work done over the last decade, only hinted at here, is due for some examination outside of the city that spawned it. Here is a chance to see what has been quietly building in this remote American
metropolis.

Opening: Saturday, October 4th, 2003
7:00 – 10:00 pm (10:00 pm to late: after party)
Fluxcore Art Space, 340 Grand Street
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, 718-599-8640

SUBWAY: L/G to Lorimer stop. Left on Metropolitan to Havemeyer. Left on

THE BLOW RECORD RELEASE SHOW @ AFTERMATH GALLERY

MORE INFO ABOUT SUNDAY'S SHOW:

Help LOSS LEADER celebrate to infinity the impending release of a record some 28 years in the making-the broad-siding embrace of The Concussive Caress, or, Casey Caught Her Mom Singing Along With the Vacuum-the long-awaited debut (I know, right?) album from K Records recording artists and fabulously fickle friends of Loss Leader the Blow.

THE BLOW is also named Khaela Maricich, not so much a woman as a tempestuous weather system. Autumn breezes and hurricanes. Between Olympia's seminal K Records and Anacortes' quietly iconic Knw-Yr-Own, she's been Khaela aricich, she's been Get The Hell Out Of The Way Of The Volcano, and she's been The Suck. Now, just the Blow. And we thank her for it everyday.

MIRAH Yom Tov Zeitlyn needs little introduction, but well, anyway: Mirah. K Records. Advisory Committee. Mirah. I mean, Mirah-right? Alright. [[[VVRSSNN]]] is YUME BITSU vibe guide Adam Forkner taking it all way, way out. No vowels? No Problem! With his sonic rainbow debut available on K, the Yarn Lazer crew will be taking it up; up to the highest peaks of the psyche. or something. I don't know, I'm no good at the dolphin speak. What I can tell you: UNITY. SERENITY. ENERGY. ETERNITY. LAZER. DOLPHIN.

THANKSGIVING is Adrian Orange of Portland, Oregon. And really something. DIRTY PROJECTORS is the project of one Dave Longstreth, a story-weaving music's man from Portland's STATESRIGHTS collective who recently released his latest collection, Morning Better Last, on States Rights Records.

PASH is the performance outlet for one Susan Ploetz, a hodgepodge of song and performance art, with heart-shaped colors fluttering about its head. Six Beings Comprising Six Bands? WITNESS THIS MATHEMATICAL ANOMALY FOR YOURSELF.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5
Loss Leader Presents
THE RECORD RELEASE SHOW FOR "THE CONCUSSIVE CARESS" by THE BLOW

Slideluck Potshow 21 @ COCA

Steven writes:

Hey there,

Once again it's time to break out your photos for Slideluck Potshow. This time around the theme is "What I did for my Summer Vacation." So, come out and show some work, whether new or old, on the theme or off.

For those of you who still don't know what slideluck is about, it is a slideshow and a potluck. Please bring good food, strong drink and up to 5 minutes worth of slides. Doors will be open at 7:00 and we'll start the slides when it gets dark.
We will have a traditional slide projector and a digital one as well. You should know that we've had a tough time lining up a digital projector. If you have one of those puppies and are willing to help us out one Tuesday every other month, please drop me an email.

Also, everyone has enjoyed past events at people's homes and studios and we
would like to thank everyone that has hosted up to this point. If you are
interested in doing so again or if you're interest in hosting for the first
time, give us a yell.

This is the first show absent our pal Casey Kelbaugh, gone off to give NYC a
go. So, please grab some slides and join us. Let's keep the ball rollin'.
Many thanks go out to the Center on Contemporary Art (COCA) that has opened
its doors for us to host there again.

Acoustic Night hits Swansea every Thursday

From an email:

Located on Capitol Hill at 517 E Pike, Swansea Espresso is a new café
emerging to be yet another destination for comfort and coffee in the Pacific
Northwest. Situated within a large 10,000 sq foot space, Swansea Espresso
plans include an evolution to becoming a community gathering place in the
heart of Seattle.

The multi-level space with beautiful floor to ceiling windows that was formerly a warehouse/retail space will be recreated into a venue that will draw from many markets. The focus will be on those lifetime bookmark times in most people’s lives such as weddings, bat mitzvahs, birthdays and other social gatherings of friends and families.

Swansea further plans include supporting the arts community through allowing artists from visual art and music to fashion design to showcase their creative endeavors within the space. The cafe has already started with it’s own acoustic night featuring Patrick Napper (Wordblender, Sixty Cycle Hum, Automatic) and various specials guests that have included Dudley Taft (Sweetwater, Second Coming) and Scott Andrew (Walking Birds) .

CAFE CASABLANCA At Patti Summers' Cabaret Night Club (9/28)

I got really sick on Saturday and couldn't make it. So I was curious to hear from Russ (or shall I say "Rick") what I missed. He wrote:

I had specifically arranged with an 'actor' to come as my German officer, and I bought a hat for him (which was probably East German) having the appropriate look. However, despite his awareness of the crucial role he was expected to play at the end of the evening, he skipped out before that, which nearly ruined my plans. (You can't trust those Nazis!) Another guy showed up wearing an unknown military outfit with a high stiff collar. He said that he could play the Nazi, and pulled from his pocket a red armband with a crude swastika. But the swastika was so crudely drawn--with a felt-tipped marker--that I thought it looked more like something a punk rocker would wear than an officer of the Third Reich, so I let his offer pass.

Luckily, k.d. Schill saved the day by prudently bringing along another officer's hat (perhaps also East German) and an overcoat--to give to someone without a costume, she said. So, at the last minute, we convinced another
guy to swap his fez for the officer's hat and to don the overcoat for the job, and thus we were able to end the party in the way (more or less) I had envisioned.

World Of Wigs (W.O.W.) on 10/25/2003.

It's a little bit early for mentioning the annual summit of The Society for the Preservation of Wigs on 10/25. But readers like Saya, who are more familiar with the brutal forces of supply and demand, that pull the wig market in October, are warning us to get ready for this important event:

Hello Mr. Volcano,

Could you list this as a heads up so people have a chance to get a wig?
Andrew was there last time and can vouch for how fun the party was. The Society for the Preservation of Wigs announces "Passport to the World"
Wig Society Event. Learn an accent from cds available at the seattle public library, grab a wig and come to Andy's Diner on the 25th of October for
fun, dancing and wig salon.
Information at WigSociety@comcast.net

Thank you.
Saya

Another strange but amusing email from the same group arrived last week:

We have heard that some people are feeling, how do i say, embarrased?
that they do not have a thick, rich foreign accent, like the crema on a
good espresso pull. Not to worry! North American english in all its
native glory is the lingua franca of the realm, and is the official accent
of both Wigdonia AND Wiglandia! And feel free to indulge in regional
variations, from the Northwest Territories to the Deep South!

If you are curious about World Of Wigs and this event you should invite yourself to http://www.evite.com/inviteMore?eventID=EFXHVNXJDGZDCAWGCYLX&iid=VWRTDRHOWRYYGNGJXDUH .

In either case we will remind you on attending this event in one of the upcoming PV letters.

Hommel's, Russo's & Bressler's summer blow-out party

We are not sure what to think about this party. It's a private party and for $25 you get some entertainment and free booze. Apparently tickets are available and going fast for Hommel's, Russo's & Bressler's summer blow-out party:

Hey everyone!!!!!

Huge party October 25th!!! Tickets are available and going fast so buy
Yours today at www.francisnash.com/party or you can get them from me at
206-354-9484.

Again we are throwing a huge end of summer blow-out on Saturday October 25th. Tickets are only $25 for a night of live performances, dance music, great food and an OPEN BAR serving top shelf booze all night! Again it's only $25 (heck you spend that much on a half tank of gas these days).

This is going to be one of the great parties of the year and if it's a success we'll be doing one of these every year, so hurry up and get on board. You don't want to be looking at someone else's pictures as they tell you how great it was.

See you all soon!
Mike Hommel
