Thursday 9/11

Auktyon @ The "Ballard" Firehouse

I know, that was yesterday. I wanted to go but missed it. But at least let me mention it here:

AUKTYON- the unique phenomenon on the contemporary music scene of Russia: in contrast to the majority of genre-challenged and as a rule stylistically within the framework of contemporary canons, this group draws its inspiration from such remote sources as ska, reggae, new-jazz, ethnic music of North Africa and Middle East, beat- and pop-music of the 60's; in spite of the eternally present messianic idea in Russian rock and its inherited didacticism, this group did not teach as much as it entertained, which apparently resulted in it being the only representative of Russia on the European club scene.

From the late 80's AUKTYON began to regularly travel to Europe: in the last ten years they have had several hundred concerts in France, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, and Check Republic.

I saw Auktyon in Germany in the 80ies – even before the Wall came down and I was impressed. Actually there are not many concerts from the 80ies that I remember: Laibach, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Lydia Lunch, Zappa, Die Goldenen Zitronen (Golden Lemons), and Auktyon. The rest of the 80ies remains blurry.

Live from RUSSIA…an Evening with: Auktyon
Date: Thursday September 11, 2003
Time: 9PM. Doors at 8PM
Venue: The (Ballard) Firehouse
5429 Russell Ave NW (corner of Market)

Marion Peck and Camille Rose Garcia @ Roq la Rue gallery

The summer is over and Roq la Rue presents new paintings of Marion Peck and Camille Rose Garcia:

Roq la Rue is very pleased to present a show of new works by two of the foremost up and coming talents in the Pop Surrealist/Lowbrow movement - Marion Peck and Camille Rose Garcia. Initially seeming wildly disparate in style, the artists are akin in that their work is imbued with incredible depth - both in subject matter, and in the layering techniques used to create the paintings themselves. Both also mine the "uncomfortable” (personal psyche/man’s destructive tendencies) in order to create their work. This show is not to be missed!

Marion Peck’s “Happy Captain” looks a little bit like Rydan’s paintings except for meat, children, and little Lincolns.

Opening Friday Sept. 12th 6-10 pm
Show runs through Oct 5th

Saturday 9/13

Flash Mob at the Foot of Space Needle

The Stranger just wrote about them:

You've probably already heard of flash mobs--their eccentric gatherings have been well documented in media vehicles from the New York Times to Good Morning America, with mobs materializing as far afield as Hungary, South Korea, and Austin. Weird and seemingly purposeless, flash mobs converge and disperse to perform simple acts of mass absurdity in metropolitan centers. Forming fleeting secret societies, flash mobbers join the club for a few minutes before dissolving again into obscurity. Nobody, not even their leadership, knows who the members are.

It was brought to our attention that the next Flash Mob will take place at the foot of Space Needle: Link arms in an enormous circle, hop up and down chanting 'The Doctor is in!'

Sounds pretty stupid to me.

Kitten Shower in Woodinville

Are you looking for a pet?

Homeward Pet Adoption Center, located at 18800 Woodinville-Snohomish Road in Woodinville, is holding a kitten shower on Saturday, September 13 from 12:00 - 6:00pm. This whimsical event will celebrate the many lives that have been saved this season, and there will be oodles of cute, cuddly kittens available for adoption. All kittens have been brought up in loving foster homes, are current on vaccines, have been spayed/neutered and have been tested for feline aids and feline leukemia.
Please stop in and say hello!

Three weeks ago I a stray dog almost run into my car on my way home and I decided to rescue him. He was an old Shar Pei (Chinese Pit Bull with wrinkles) and I called him Heinz, because he was really into food. I took him to my house and I wanted him to stay within my fenced backyard over night before I would take him to the animal shelter the next morning. That evening he ate a full bowl of yummy lamb dog food, took a nap, and worked all night digging a whole under my fence until he eventually fit through it. At least that was my best theory on the next morning:

no dog + big whole under the fence = escaped dog + stupid dog rescuer.

Besides realizing that I was tricked by a Shar Pei I was also wondering: What if this was actually better for Heinz? If he had stayed with me he would have ended up in a dog shelter. If he had been lucky some middle class family with 2.5 kids would have adopted him and would have provided Heinz some sort of a happy middle class dog life. On the other hand escaping from my backyard offered so much more. There is that Red Apple around the corner with that pile of yummy trash and all those Central District squirrels that clearly need to be disciplined. In conclusion I wasn’t really sure which life was better: being homeless with fun or living a dull life with a boring family and only being allowed to pee every six hours. If I had been Heinz I would have worked all night to escape too.

Archie Bray Foundation Auction

Katie Kurtz (Sand Point’s Project 18) writes:

I've been asked to promote the heck’s out of this benefit for the Archie Bray Foundation happening THIS Saturday September 13th at Town Hall starting at 5:30. Perhaps when you hear 'ceramics,' you think of the lumpy ashtrays you made in elementary school, the "teapots" you made in highschool (my ceramics teacher insisted they were all 'hookahs'), or the earth-toned bowls and teacups found in abundance at Northwest crafts fairs. However! Work featured in this auction is made by highly regarded contemporary ceramic artists and will change your perception of clay's capabilities forever.

Can't Fight This Feeling -- 80s PROM!

I am not entirely sure whether this a party we are allowed to write about or not. On one hand Party Volcano has received a direct invitation and about 400 guests have been invited. But the invite itself looks like a private party. Hmm, tough case. Here is what we’ll do: I will publish this private party invite but without address. If you want to join this party you have to invite yourself using the link below. I hope that this will give the hosts of the party enough control over the guest list.

Here is there rest of the evite: Jen Akuna,Rhonda,Sid,Jen Hill,Tammy&Jen Vranek are inviting your to this interesting party:

Another one bites the dust...

Help Jen Putman celebrate her 30th birthday in style -- '80s style, that is. We're throwing her an '80s PROM! That's right: pink puffy lace dresses, big hair, dyed shoes, matching cummerbunds.

Think: Sixteen Candles. Pretty in Pink. The Wedding Singer. Erasure, REO Speedwagon, Madonna, Poison, REM.

"Can't Fight This Feeling" is our prom theme. Come in your tackiest '80s prom outfits, as we will have a photo booth for you and your date to make some memories AND we will elect a Prom Court. We will also embarrass people throughout the night by displaying their high school yearbook photos (...)

Plan to party into the night. DJs will spin '80s music while you munch on prom-style appetizers and drink our wine, good beer and all the mixers you will ever need. Please bring a fifth of your favorite liquor and five of your closest friends.

(Limos, flasks, fancy dinners, renting a hotel room and/or losing your virginity in the backseat of your date's car are all optional at this prom.)

p.s. Those of you who attended the Hawaiian Luau last month will understand: Due to the graphic nature of program content, this party is not suitable for those under 21.

Sounds good? – Invite yourself:

Last day of Project 18 @ Sand Point Magnuson Park

Katie Kurtz wries:

Hey PVers.

I totally spaced on sending you a note about the opening party for Project 18: VERGE last Saturday! HOWEVER, the exhibition runs through September 14th at Sand Point Magnuson Park, Building 18 (the first free-standing building on your right after you enter through the 74th Street entrance). You can also take a virtual tour at www.sandpointarts.org and if you DO come out and there's nothing in the box that says "Chris DeLaurenti" on it, send me an email will your address and I'll e(arth)mail you a surprise!

Katie

Here is a little bit more about Project 18:

Project 18: Outdoor Sculptural Installations by Local Emerging Artists

Project 18: VERGE is SPACE’s third annual outdoor exhibition of site-specific work by local artists. Artists chose for 2003 are Christopher DeLaurenti, Thom Heileson, Charles McHale, Lead Pencil Studio (Annie Han + Daniel Mihalyo), and Lauren Woodward + Janice Nyman. SPACE developed Project 18 as a tangible way to identify Building 18 as the future home of a public arts facility that will include studios, workshops, and a gallery space. SPACE supports the artist (or team) with an honorarium, project assistance, and exhibition postcards.

Free and open to the public during regular park hours.

Sundazed @ Golden Gardens

It might be already too cold or too rainy for these kinds of events:

Sundazed - September 14th at Golden Gardens
Sundazed!!!!!!
A light crash of waves...
...the sounds of kids playing....
......the grass tickling the bottom of your feet...
.........hundereds of your closest friends dancing beside you...

The [nrr] consortium welcomes you to summer in style with

SUNDAZED

Background:
In its current form, Sundazed has been bringing Seattle events for 5 summers. Over the years, [nrr] has incorporated people from many promotion groups, artists, and dancers and artists from Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Individuals involved with [nrr] have also been a part of promotion groups such as: Groovetech.com, Inertia Labs, United House Front, QT Productions (producers of the I_<3_u>

What to expect:

The first thing to realize is THIS IS NOT A RAVE. These events, while incorporating electronic music, will be different than what most of you have experienced. These events are low-keyed, DIY events held on Sunday afternoons in some of Seattle's amazingly beautiful city parks. Parents bring their kids, kids bring their dogs, dogs bring ...well..I dont know. BBQs happen regularly...people bounce around chatting it up with their closest friends, or the closest stranger. Music varies all over the board (your standard house, dnb, techno and trance), as well as styles you would not normally hear at a party like Dub, Glitch, Downtempo, Trip Hop, and (hopefully) some Acid Jazz. If you want glitz, lazers, visuals, etc, you will not get it here. We bring friends, community, smiles, and music...the things our scene are REALLY built upon.

TIME: noon - Sundown-ish
LINEUP:TBD (who cares? you know you'll have a blast!)

Barr booksigning @ Roq La Rue

Kirsten writes:

Roq La Rue Gallery Presents
A book signing with Glenn Barr
Sunday Sept 14th 5-7pm

Artist Glenn Barr will be at Roq la Rue this Sunday, Sept 14th signing copies of his gorgeous new art book " Lowlife Paradise " from 5-7pm. Glenn's paintings of girls, guns, and cars are too painterly to be dismissed as mere cartoons, and his depictions of metropolis decay mixed with pop futurism are a delight to behold.
We'll have lots of books on hand.

Fringe Theatre Festival Opening Night Gala @ CHAC

When it comes to picking plays I have “shit on my fingers”. I haven’t seen any good plays here in Seattle in eight years. I did see some great dance performances – but theatre is not my game. That’s why I am refering you to the experts over Three Imaginary Girls, who run a wonderful site and host fun events like Buttrock Karaoke. Their section called “Imaginary Boy Posse: Seattle Fringe Theatre Festival” offers some useful opinions and picks without the suspicious this-play-is-great-my-boyfriend-is-in-it:

LOSS LEADER Show @ CoCA.

The press release says:

Come one, come all: Please join Loss Leader, as we present this totally rad show:

Meme Concert Series # 13?
Wed., Sept. 17th at CoCA w/
The Curtains(Oakland, feat. members of Deerhoof), Maher Shala Hash Baz(Japan), Gust Burns, the Black Lodge

All the Pertinent Background info:

MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ - Though their reputation has been spreading all over the world via recent releases on The Pastels' Geographic label, MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ has never before played in the US in their 20 years of existence and their arrival here is eagerly anticipated. The brainchild of husband and wife team Tori & Reiko Kudo and euphonium player Hiro Nakazaki, MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ is only the latest phase in a musical effort which dates back to the late 70's Tokyo underground. All over the world, this mythical troupe has been talked about, collected on expensive out of print LPs, but never seen outside of Japan, except for an appearance in 2001 at Le Weekend Festival in Scotland and THE CURTAINS are very proud to be hitting the road with them this fall. Come see what THE WIRE magazine called "an exhilarating experience."

THE CURTAINS - Beginning in San Francisco in 2000, this eccentric trio has been shifting and changing, now incorporating members of the bands DEERHOOF and OPEN CITY. Small, picaresque film musics join bizarre and enthusiastic third-stream jags in quick crumb-sized compositions that demo the latest wave in west-coast abstraction. This summer they have released their second full-length on the Thin Wrist label.

Seattle's Gust Burns has quickly become a central figure in the local improv scene since his relocation here a couple of years ago, organizing countless events and participating in a ton of projects. He will present a solo piano performance of improvised "etudes."

Openers the Black Lodge(Gregory Reynolds, amplified saxophone and Jason Anderson, guitar/laptop) make ultra-dense, shuddering noise constructions.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
@ CENTER ON CONTEMPORARY ART (CoCA)
LOSS LEADER PRESENTS
MEME CONCERT SERIES #13
featuring
THE CURTAINS (Oakland - feat. members of Deerhoof)
MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ (Japan)
GUST BURNS
