Events from Thu 7/26 to Wed 7/31.
partyvolcano@y...

By now all of our readers should have received that ugly "Welcome to Yahoo Groups" email from us. Please send us an email if you know somebody who did not receive this week's email. This is the first email sent out after switching Party Volcano's administrative parts over to Yahoo Groups. It turned out that we had to get a special permission for directly adding people to Yahoo Groups.

Let's move on to more pleasant topics like parties and art events.
Below you will find a list of our weekly recommendations and lemons.

UFO AU GO GO.

Party Volcano has received positive reports about last month's Ufo Au
Go Go. That night a bunch of people left Butler's Homo Garden Show
and continued the rest of the evening at Sit and Spin. They say they
had really good time at Ufo Au Go Go. DJ Chris Porter has the big
picture and calculated that there won't be woo many Ufo Au Go Gos
left this year: "Only two more left in the year after this (I'm
taking some time off plus our night runs into the holidays) so don't
miss your chance to get your monthly mod fix."

If you are wondering what "monthly mod fix" means, here is the press
release:

A NIGHT OF MOD SCENES AND GROOVY SOUNDS. 60's mod and psychedelic
rock, soul, Brit Pop, Acid Jazz and International Pop will be on the
aural menu. Go Go Dancers and far out projections will be on the
visual. Featuring DJ Chris Porter and Guest DJ Easy Action. Special
guest performance, bringing their entirely "mod"ern burlesque to UFO
Au Go Go - Members of The Gun St. Girls…Visual projections provided
by Killing Frenzy Productions

Happening the last Thursday of every month at Sit and Spin. 2219
Fourth Ave, 9pm, $6 (half price with a Vespa Club card). Mod dress
encouraged.

Forest Festival.

We have been told from all sources, that this is not as cheesy as it
sounds. The press release says:

Join us in the present empowerment of our people, nourishing
conscious roots of our shared Earth community and the evolving
branches of our culture's soul…

Featuring
World Meditation Ensemble West African Drum and Dance - Afo Butoh
Ensembles - P.A.N. & Dappin Butoh Post Asiatic Improv Trio - Nequaqum
Vaquum Performance Art Installation - Free $oil Trance Groove Sounds-
Cast of the Akwada Incendiary Artists - Pyrosutra And much more.

It does sound pretty cheesy, doesn't it?
Good Shepherd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Avenue North in Wallingford. 3-
10pm, free.

Friday 7/26.

Fair @ Bellevue Square.

This is a huge, three day fair (300,000 attendees last year) and
we've heard that it is a good one with close monitoring by the
organizers to make sure the artists' booths are presenting fine art
merchandise, rather than the typical assortment of macramé plant
holders and painted flower pots. Talented photographer John Labovitz
will be there. Labovitz shoots classic still life photos, but prints
exclusively digitally. The result is gorgeous, subtle, intriguing.
PV is there! (But will probably take the bus because parking will be
horrible)
Friday 7/26 and Sat 7/27 9:30am to 9:30pm; Sun 7/28 9:30am to 6:00pm.
Bellevue Square. Free. John Labovitz's booth is #S-34, near NE 8th
Street.

Karl's Farewell Party in Duwamish.

This sounds like a big party with friendly people. Dead chimneysweep
Becki is not running the kissing booth this time but she will be one
of the DJs. Here is the original text of the invitation:

Come see me off, Dok Holiday, Karl that is, kiss his ass goodbye it's
movin' to the east coast baby! it's my going away party! this is
DEFINITELY going to be one of those parties that you'll kick yourself
forever for missing if you don't go...

Bring cushions/pillows for musical chairs, bring armour for jousting.
Costumes encouraged (choose your own adventure). Volunteers needed
for checkpoints for the alleycat race...

Some of the attractions are: alleycat race, tallbike jousting, bike
polo. There will be also a bunch of bands playing: Sunday Bombing,
Aestetically Pleasing, Rodeosex Playland.

The House of Ill Repute, 3805 Delridge Way SW. (just off the delridge
exit, just barely on the west seattle side of the Duwamish, an easy
biking distance for all)
Alleycat racers: race begins at Washington Legal 7:30-ish

'In Public' Closing Show @ Cafe Venus & Mars Bar.

Mary LaMorte (what a name!) is inviting all of you to join her for a
well needed drink (and to look at some, well, really cool photos!).
Check out www.cafevenus.com for a preview! She writes:

My exhibit 'In Public' is coming down this weekend...so you MUST
come...and bring friends!! The more...the Mary-er!!!

Cafe Venus & Mars Bar (located at 609 Eastlake Ave East @ Mercer),
starting at 8pm. Free.

Ursula 1000 @ Nation.

In case you haven't heard about it: Bonafide is a weekly DJ event at
Nation (2nd floor of I-Spy). This week Ursula 1000 is performing as a
special guest and in addition to that Franklin Joyce will show an
audio installation. Notice that Franklin is specialized in
revitalizing tranquil sidewalks (see Electricbaby on Sat). What a
perfect place to practice! ...

Party Volcano was hoping to redeem its V.I.P. chips for the Ursula
1000 show. Jason has been generously putting people on his guest list
but this time the shop is closed: "we were only given a handful of
spots that we already have divied out. sorry!" Despite our
disappointment we believe Ursula 1000 is probably worth $8 even after
our Bonafide downgrade last week.
Nation, 1921 5th Ave. $8. 9pm-2am.
Links: http://www.sub-sonic.org, .
Guest list request: bonafide@a...

Burning Cage Fund Raiser.

Mary Jane Gibson and Nicole Dufresne are leaving for two months on
their fringe tour through Canada showing "Burning Cage" and need some
money to do so. In return they promise an evening with DJs, dancing,
drinking, eating, prizes, a secret auction, and a sneak preview of
their show. Suggested donation is $5 - unless you want to volunteer
as a slave at the secret auction (just kidding!).
11th/Pike. Next to Barca. You'll see a big banner or perhaps people
in straight jackets, 8pm-2am. $5.

Saturday 7/27.

Electricbaby @ Bellevue's Audio Art Walk.

Electricbaby's Franklin Joyce, who is a Seattle-based, new media
artist lets us know about his new installation:

Electricbaby announced today the debut of Audio Art Walk at the 55th
Annual Bellevue Art Museum Fair. Audio Art Walk is a 100', six-
channel outdoor sound installation that transforms a section of
tranquil sidewalk into a passageway of animated sounds, dialogue, and
interviews.

Notice that he will also try to revitalize tranquil Bonafide sections
on Friday.
Bellevue Art Museum, 510 Bellevue Way NE, July 27-29.

Hardware Camp Secret Café, Yard Sale, Speakeasy, Carnival and Party @
745 Bellevue Ave E.

This is a multiphasic benefit for Hardware Camp which is one of the
Burning Man camps (yes, this is yet another Burning Man benefit). It
goes from 10am Saturday to 2am Sunday, and we think it will be
brilliant. Steven Miller writes:

Burning Man inspires a lot of people to make expensive art and they
all seem to be throwing benefits in the next couple of weeks to pay
their ways to the desert. Hardware Camp, known for supplying all the
tools you forget to bring to Black Rock City, is having a speakeasy
cafe all day Saturday at (somebody know this location). With any luck
two of their crew will make the most beautiful sushi this pv
reporter's ever seen - little sea creatures constructed of seaweed,
rice and an assortment of vegetables. Otherwise it's always fun to be
harassed by Carl. Ask for the "Hot Carl" Sandwich.

10am to 8pm: Secret Café and Yard Sale. Breakfast, lunch and dinner
will be served. The reason it is "secret" is that they don't have the
proper licenses to sell food to the public. We've heard that the food
will be delicious and cheap. We love this idea because it is both
capitalistic and illegal. But instead of crack cocaine or heroin, you
can get a tofu scramble or sushi.

10pm to 2am: the Café will morph into a speakeasy (again, no proper
licenses to sell liquor) and party with various carnival
performances. We're not sure exactly what these carnival acts will
entail but we believe that this will be a really fun party with a
huge turnout. Highly recommended.

745 Bellevue Ave E (north Capitol Hill, near E. Roy Street), 10am to
2am

Yard Sale @Belmont/Harrison.

It looks like Raya is also moving to NYC. The Everything-Must-Go yard
sale includes , art, appliances, and more! Have a look at the yard

Seafood Fest in Ballard.

When I was at the Seafood Fest in Ballard last year I got a call from
a friend, who wanted to know what was going on that afternoon. Like
always I told her the truth: "I see ugly firemen playing with their
hoses. You should come to Ballard!" That pretty much summarizes
everything you need to know about Ballard's Seafood Fest. If you
don't believe me go to their disturbing website
http://www.seafoodfest.org . Notice that the picture of the stinking
fishes changes to a (stinking?) Ballard grandma as you move the mouse
cursor over the word "Music". Strange things also happen on "Fun"
and "Information".

Personally I believe Ballard (as we see it today) was created by mad
scientists in the late forties. They used a 100', six-channel outdoor
sound installation for their gene manipulation experiments and
transformed tranquil Ballard into a neighborhood of nutty, deranged
people. This weekend you will have a chance to see them in action.
They meet in their sound contaminated downtown, eat lutefisk until
they vomit (Lutefisk Eating Contests, Sat 2pm) and call it Seafood
Fest. There are a lot of other things going on too. Most of them are
rather questionable. But I will not bore you with my theories about
what the "two scoops" stand for in Eric "Two Scoops" Moore (Sun
5:45pm). Just one hint: he will "perform" right after The Meat
Purveyors (Sun 4:30pm). By the way, the ugly firemen will show their
hoses on Sunday again in case you missed them on Saturday or last
year. On the surface the Ballard Seafood Fest looks like a normal
family fest. But if you look closer you will notice: These people are
sick! Ballard shows how backwards Seattle really is and why you
should work harder on your plans for moving to a real city. You
should go! It will change your life.

Ballard Seafood Fest, NW Market in downtown Ballard. Sat 11am-8pm.
Sun noon-7pm. Free.

"A Special Salute to Land Rover" @ Bellevue Community College.

We include this because it is so ridiculous. It's "A Special Salute
to Land Rover", within a larger convention for British car
enthusiasts. And it's held in Bellevue. In other words it's a chance
for rich Land Rover owners to get together and show off their big,
expensive cars, which are built for the most rugged of conditions,
and which, of course, the typical Bellevuite never uses for anything
more rigorous than navigating the speed bumps at Bell Square.

This reminds Party Volcano that there is a very funny national
movement in which people are encouraged to tag SUVs with bumper
stickers saying: "I'm Changing the Climate, Ask Me How." (The joke,
of course, comes from a serious and legitimate issue: SUVs with their
incredible fuel inefficiency cause more than their fair share of
global warming through ozone depletion, etc.; and this is hard to
justify since the vast majority of SUVs are not used for work or off-
roading but for driving the kids to soccer practice.) You can
actually go to Changing the Climate's website and download an Adobe
Acrobat file to print the bumper stickers yourself.

There is also a very funny local movement in which people are tagging
SUVs and other stupid stuff with bumper stickers that read: "XTREME
ARROGANCE", "XTREME STUPIDITY", "XTREMELY WASTEFUL", or "XTREME
POLLUTER". These bumper stickers also have an email address on them
(xtremephobia@h...) so that the tagees can email the taggers and call
the taggers "assholes" or whatever for defacing their Humvee.

Our investigative reporter Sebastian Junger managed to track down the
originators of the XTREME line of stickers. Mr Junger: "The two
originators, a young woman and young man who requested anonymity,
struck me as intelligent and funny. They are very aware of what they
are doing and why they are doing it. For them it's combining
political activism with guerrilla art with humor. The young woman
explained that the idea for the bumper stickers initially came from
the trend of `extreme sports' which in turn has trickled down to
consumer products being branded as `extreme', eg protein bars, etc.
If you want to order the XTREME line of stickers, you are encouraged
to drop them an email."

"Salute to Land Rover", Bellevue Community College, Free, 11am to
4pm. More info, including directions: http://www.abfm.com/abfm.htm

Illuminares Lantern Festival in Vancouver B.C.

When I went to this lantern festival a couple of years ago, I felt
like I was floating through a waking dream. Islands of light of all
shapes and sizes—fantastical fish, miniature planets, giant birds—
softly flickered across the night landscape. It was, at once, gentle,
chimerical, wonderful. Mostly local Vancouverites attend Illuminares
and nearly everyone brings a candle-lit, paper lantern, whether huge
and elaborate, or basic and simple. It's the best sort of gathering:
free, creative, magical. It is well worth the trip to Vancouver BC.
Make your own lantern and go.

"From the Ground Up" in Duvall.

Steven Miller has provided us with this useful information: This is
a "sculptural performance event" about 45 minutes from Seattle in
Duvall. This event has been going on for years under the name
Horsehead. Name's changed, different people running the thing, but
last year the new management pulled it off just fine. Except for that
poor fella who fell on the spiky art and had to go to the hospital.
Whoopsy. We'd heard this wouldn't happen at all this year due to
legal worries, but P.V. is glad to see that weird art in the woods
will prevail. The most amusing anecdote from last year was a bus full
of Japanese tourists standing around Gary Smoot's weiner dog
installation and clapping as yet another weiner dog flew out of a
tube and up into the trees. It's a beautiful location and has twelve
artists (including the volcano's Susan Robb) showing their
installations. There will be also some music performers and DJs. The
invitation says that the event will start at 3pm and end at 11pm. But
I would rather assume that this will be an all night event. Many of
the people will probably stay overnight. Camping is encouraged. You
should bring your tent and have a bleary breakfast in Duvall.

Slender Means Society @ Secluded Alley Works.

I am surprised that The Stranger is not mentioning this event in this
week's issue. They have always been big about SMS – even before one
of the SMS dudes got the job as Emily Hall's left hand. Party Volcano
has heard 'handsome-but-too-young-to-ask-out-on-a-date' Zak
Pennington is now in charge for compiling the Visual Art Listings in
the Stranger. Here is what the SMS dudes themselves say about their
event:

"It's over!" (sob) It begins Midsummer night sweat, a post
apocalyptic fever dream. Masquerade ball and evening packed
with "post everything" performances featuring: ONNO, OLD TIME
RELIJUN, PRION, THEE SWAMP, SLEETMUTE, the Science, +random fire
spinning mutants, poisonous D.J.s, feral minstrels. An open
invitation, we solicit your participation, frenzied creative
copulation *appropriate costumery encouraged strongly*

Anabret on KEXP.

I you happen to be in your car - maybe as you are driving to the
Mambo Mojo Party - don't miss Anabret on KEXP (90.3 FM) at 8pm.

Mambo Mojo Party.

This is one of those PubMixer events. Andrea Martin is once again
mobilizing for a big party:

There's a Disco-Salsa Sizzlin' Party Extraganza going down at the new
Fernando's Hideaway in Belltown and it's going to be BIG! For those
unfamiliar with Fernando's, it is this very cool, art-deco
lounge/restaurant with a dance floor, couches and bar. The place will
be reserved for our party only. It's a great place with different
rooms (each decorated to a different stye) joined by tall, Old World
Spanish archways. All tucked away in Belltown. When I first walked
into their lounge for the first time, I thought, "I >must< have a
party here"...And so here it is…!

Andrea seems to be concerned that only the salsa mafia will show up.
She is pointing out that there will be a lot more than just salsa
dancing: "Someone asked if it would be all about dancing...No, not at
all. It's a big place with a great bar, lounge & different rooms -
It's a big PARTY!"

Fernando's Hideaway, 522 Wall St, Belltown (corner of 6th & Wall).
Parking is free - they have their own lot. $10 pre-paid, $15 at the
door (see details in the evite).
Doors open at 9pm, salsa lessons for beginners start at 9:30pm. Then
free-style Salsa & Disco sprinkled with some House music for the rest
of the night.

Wednesday, 7/31.

Surrealistic Movies @ Linda's.

If you have never heard of "Un Chien Andalou" you should read on or
just come to Linda's on Wednesday. You probably already know that
during summer Linda's Tavern is showing movies on their porch every
Wednesday. This summer I have seen some really good German movies
("M" and "Metropolis") and some really shitty cartoon sitcoms from
the 70ies. Next Wednesday they will be showing surrealistic movies by
Louis Buñuel, Maya Deren, Jean Cocteau, and others. They will not
show Maya Deren's famous "Meshes of the afternoon". But instead
you'll see "At Land" by her.

The main reason why you should not miss this event is Buñuel's "Un
Chien Andalou" (An Andalusian Dog). Buñuel wrote the script for this
brilliant movie in collaboration with Dali. In his memoirs Buñuel
writes that the movie was based on two dreams. Buñuel went to spend a
few days Dali's house and told him of a dream he had had, in which a
cloud sliced the moon in half, "like a razor blade slicing through an
eye." Dali countered with his own dream about a hand crawling with
ants. "And what if we started right there and made a film?" he asked
Buñuel, and they did. They wrote the screenplay together, and Bunuel
directed, taking only a few days and borrowing the budget from his
mother. The result is amazing. You have to see it and you will
probably need a drink afterwards too, because you'll be confused and
strangely touched. That's why Linda's will the perfect place!

Linda's Tavern. 701 E Pine, free, movie starts around 9:30pm.

Future Lava.

Next week looks really busy too: Art Walk, Jelly Fish Fund Raiser @
JEM Studios, The Aloha Bra Show with El Vez, Space Virgin Party,
Blurred @ CoCA, and Mc Mullen's Process Physics @ V5.

Jelly Fish Fund Raiser Party @ JEM Studios on 8/2.

This is an early reminder about the Jelly Fish Fund Raiser Party next
week. Here is what Steven Miller (one of the Jelly Fish people)
writes:

Burning Man inspires a lot of people to make expensive art and they
all seem to be throwing benefits in the next couple of weeks to pay
their ways to the desert... There's also the Jellyfish camp, more
formally known as "You Are My Zooplankton, Come Closer!" Though
they're going to have constructed three giant jellyfish with dinner
theater out on the playa, here in Seattle they're planning a big ole
dance party from 9pm-4am on Aug 2 at JEM Studios (I don't have the
address). Music will be spun by DJ Heavy, Paul Edwards (who plans
to "wreck the kids"), Maga Bo fresh off the plane spinning all things
Brazilian, Malcolm Groovesmith playing the most amazing drum and bass
ragga I've heard in years, and the ever wonderful DJ Eddie, who
refuses to be pinned to any one kind of musical style. Let's just say
he'll be a smorgasbord of tastiness. There's rumor of a Jellyfish
cafe serving sushi but with the added twist of it being butoh sushi
(is that the only kind of dance anybody does here?). I also hear
there's going to be an octopus on the loose searching for his geisha
girl's private parts. More details to come next week.
