They Shoot Painters, Don't They? In Fremont

Mark your calendars! Schedule in Outlook! Set your alarm clocks! - Center on Contemporary Art's (CoCA's) 24-Hour Painting Marathon & Auction (aka "They Shoot Painters, Don't They?") takes place this weekend in Fremont!

The Painting Marathon portion begins promptly at 9am on Friday, October 1, and runs right up until 9am the next day. The public is encouraged to drop by at any time to see the creative process of these very talented artists (before work, at lunch, after school, after bars close). Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members - and CoCA will have a bar set up to serve visitors wanting to enjoy a drink while observing genius at work. Also, please note that Friday, October 1 is Fremont's First Friday Art Walk, so this is a perfect opportunity to check out the Fremont art scene while in the neighborhood for the Marathon.

The Auction portion begins at 7pm on Saturday, October 2 (doors open at 6pm). This not-to-be-missed fundraising event is extremely vital in ensuring that CoCA will continue to provide an important venue for Northwest artists and will continue to showcase the most provocative and most important cutting-edge art exhibitions and events in Seattle. And for the public, this is an amazing opportunity to walk away with fantastic works of art from some of Seattle's finest painters. Admission to the Auction is $10 for members/$15 for non-members for general auditorium seating and $50 individual/$80 couple for special VIP Table seating.

My advice to all -- Get there early, eye out the works you can't live without, grab a couple of drinks and hors d'oeurves - and get your auction paddle ready for the festive bidding led by Seattle's favorite auctioneer Laura Michalek.

Marathon info, including ticketing, a map and directions to the 124 N 35th Street location in Fremont, can be found at www.cocaseattle.org/marathon

"Brazillian Images" @ Aftermath

Diana writes:

I don't need to tell many of you how 12th ave is growing like gangbusters. Within about 5 blocks you can find two of the most talked about new restaurants in town (Lark, Crave) and the best photo gallery and school in the entire Northwest (Photographic Center NW).

Now the Northwest Film Forum is officially opening in October on 12th between Pike/Pine and Aftermath is pretty excited to be in the middle of it all. On top of all that, the city has just finished widening the street, painting bike lanes, planting trees and installing replica light posts, which makes the whole 12th ave corridor look a lot different.

So here are some events in the neighborhood this weekend:

First, here at Aftermath we will be featuring photographs by Jeff Jones from a recent trip to Brazil.
Saturday Oct. 2 6-10pm with refreshments!

Next, the same night a few feet away, we highly recommend paintings by Daniel Michael Viox at the soon-to-be-demolished ActiveSpace building which used to be Doc Hamilton's place during prohibition. The speakeasy was closed in 1916 by Seattle Police and now it's like the inside of an airplane hangar. This is Viox's temporary studio so come see us and Viox before it's too late! See the history and pictures here: http://www.snakinc.com/aftermathfw/speakeasy.html

Finally, the Northwest Film Forum is showing a great film called "Monumental: David Brower's Fight for Wild America" by Kelly Duane who will be in attendance to all 7pm screenings. Live music on Friday, Oct 1!

Arty Party @ VAIN

In her last email Ms Susan Robb indicated that she was "up to her eyelashes" in clear vinyl trying to get her work finished for Saturday's opening at Vain. I know there are many events this Saturday but this one will be the best art opening. I promise.

Mr DK Pan (see Competitive Butoh @ Cowgirls in our April Fools issue) writes:

DJ Krush @ NewMo's

This will be an early show. In my opinion DJ Krush's recent album 'Jaku' is excellent and I am bummed that I won't be able to make it because of other obligations. I am overall impressed by his work I have listened to (Code 4109, Ki-Oku, Zan, Jaku). Some tracks are kind of boring but the ones where he mixes in pieces of Miles Davis's music (Stormy Cloud from Jaku) or Taiyou Ga from Code 4109 with the Bulgarian choir are brilliant.

But let me also mention that I have been warned that DJ Krush does not necessarily play what you find on his CDs. One time he apparently played rock music all night, which was very disappointing for his fans that expected a little bit more.

If you find this kind of music interesting you might also want to get tickets for the Derrick May show on 10/23 at Chop Suey. I can't believe it's only $13.

Pollination @ Catwalk.

This is a Burning Man event (I think I should stop using the abbreviation "BM" since I have learned that "BM" can be misinterpreted as "Bowel Movements"). Is that good or bad? I think it's good. If I had the time I would go to the Catwalk after stopping at Vain and catching the early show with DJ Kruch at Neumo's. You should check it out:
