Isolated Reflections @ ConWorks.

Isolated Reflections
a multimedia performance installation

Premiering new works by Long String Instrument creator, Ellen Fullman
Co-presented by Consolidated Works and Nonsequitur
Thursday–Saturday, July 29-31, 9pm
$10 admission, tickets available only at the door

Consolidated Works and Nonsequitur are proud to present the world premiere of a new piece by sculptor/performer/composer Ellen Fullman and her Long Stringed Instrument. Strings spanning the entire length of ConWorks’ main gallery---played by literally walking through it—create an aural soundscape and performance environment that is completely transformative.

“Fullman will bring the venue alive as a sounding space, charging the air with scintillating shapeshifting clouds of overtones.” (The Wire, July, 2004) Tonya Lockyer’s dance has been described as “emotional architecture, with cool sensuality: textured and idiosyncratic.” Using large-scale video projections, installation artist Christine Wallers attempts to create an experience of the ephemeral, the just emerging and the barely visible, from the interplay between object and space. Known primarily for sculpture and public art works, Susan Zoccola will premiere a new video installation: “Home Movies: Beginning Again”. Master koto player Elizabeth Falconer and violinist Tari Nelson-Zagar will be featured.

Consolidated Works is located at 500 Boren Avenue North.

Susan Lammers writes:

I wouldn't normally send you promo email re events I'm involved with . . .
but this one might be of particular interest to you, as a big part of it
is music! A group of us (self titled "More Ants Than Elephants") has
organized an afternoon of art and live music on Sunday, August 1, to
benefit the grassroots political action group MoveOnPAC (40% for
advertising in swing states, 40% for getting out the vote, and 20% for
supporting progressive candidates). I've been personally responsible for
organizing the live music, and I'm thrilled at the wonderful lineup of
musicians who are eager to help turn our country around! Check out the web
site below for a complete list of participating musicians and artists. I'll
be performing Brazilian music with vocalist Samia Panni as well as my
original music with my own group, the Nelda Swiggett Trio. Feel free to
forward this email to your friends.

"Subtext" Photo Show @ Retail Therapy

Please join us for the gallery opening of Hans Proppe’s photoshow, entitled “Subtext.” Hans uses the television as source material to create a seamless and intriguing collage of imagery and words. In the past 25 years Hans has produced sixty some hours of television movies and mini-series including such movies as: Into Thin Air: Death on Everest and Anne Frank.

“I like to engage the viewer of these photographs both visually and cognitively. Hopefully, in the images that succeed, there is a discovery to be made, a nod of recognition, an appreciation not necessarily just of the image itself but of the larger idea and intent of the image.”

For a peek at Hans’s work, check out his website at: http://www.shadowplayimages.com/

What makes these pieces even more extraordinary is that chance is the controlling factor. There has been no digital manipulation of the images.

101 Ways to Remove a President From Power @ CoCA.

101 Ways to Remove a President From Power

Presented by The Center on Contemporary Art
in association with Vital 5 Productions
August 6 - September 12, 2004
Curated by Greg Lundgren

It only takes one newspaper to reveal our trouble with presidents. Whether
it is corporate executives or ruthless dictators, these few leaders have
affected the livelihood and freedoms of billions. Political leaders from
Hitler to Hussein required major loss of life to remove, corporate leaders
such as Kenneth Lay of Enron and L. Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco bankrupt
investors and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions. This abuse of power has
forever changed the landscape of our regional and international communities
and it is time to seek answers and alternatives from the creative community.

How do we remove a president from power? Is it a rainstorm of midnight
bombs? Is it political and economic sanctions? Do we monitor our corporate
leaders with greater scrutiny?

101 Ways to Remove a President From Power is not an exhibit founded upon
hatred, violence or anarchy. As Americans, we have inherited great freedoms
of self-expression and are granted the opportunity to speak out about
corruption, greed and cruelty without legal recourse. We have fought wars
to protect these freedoms, and it is important to exercise this luxury, to
show the world community the power of constitution and freedom of speech.

Regarding the scope of the word "President", we include all domestic and
foreign leaders, whether they are called president, dictator, king, queen,
prime minister, general or chief. We include all corporate leaders, whether
they are called president, CEO, or owner. Also included are all
organizations, ranging from non-profit art centers to car clubs. We asked a
simple question and 50 artists raised their hands. This exhibition reflects
their uncensored response, manifested in painting, photography, sculpture
and performance.

"The Year in Preview" Art Gallery Opening

Rejoice my friends!!!...

for you are cordially invited to the 1st opening
at our new little gallery the MPSR
(3202 15thAve W
at the corner of 15th and Dravus
3 blocks before the Ballard bridge).

On Friday, August 6, 2004 we will officially open our
doors to the public for
"The Year in Preview,"
with JC Reilly, VBlast, and Dewey McGinnis.

Featured this show are the artists who will be
presenting solo shows through the remainder of 2004.
As most of you know, JC Reilly's work is an
ever-changing palette of abstract figures and
figurative/text paintings in bold colors and textures.

VBlast glories in abstract expressionism. His work is
organic and fiercely stated. Thick textures and
shading highlight his depictions of power, passion,
good and evil.

Dewey McGinnis is a consummate artist cranking out
hundreds of pieces each year. His work ranges as far
as his interests: trees and landscapes, still-lifes,
portraits, and ghostly studies in pure color.

The doors will open early at 4pm and, for your
convenience (we know there are several openings this
evening), we will stay open until 11pm. We will have
the usual art show accompaniments of wine, beer,
cheese, bread, ...

Please come! Bring your friends! Ask your boss!
Invite that special someone you've been working up the
nerve to ask out...

GMP #16: CHILDHOOD TRAUMA

Hey Guerrillas!

Childhood is a time of innocence. A time when the magical seem real
and everything seems possible. As children we dream of growing up to
be firemen, and we trust adults implicitly. We believe that the tooth
fairy exchanges money for our rotten teeth, a giant rabbit hides
colored eggs and gives us candy, and an obese man from another
continent squeezes through our chimney to fill old socks with
presents. We immerse ourselves in the fantastic lives of super
heroes, collect barbie dolls and matchbox cars, and live in fear of
the Boogy Man.

But at some point, the magic starts to fade.

We find our Christmas presents hidden under our parents' bed. We
realize that very few people are actually cut out to be firemen and
we're far too homely to be a supermodel. We discover that beloved
celebrities can be criminals, and that politicians tell lies to get
elected. Our bodies begin to change, and hormones begin to rage. The
Thing that lives under the bed turns out to be some old shoes. Our
fantasy world comes crumbling down around us.

In the Jewish tradition, adulthood begins at 13. In some Wiccan
sects, adulthood is defined by the onset of pubic hair or menses.
Masai boys become warriors (and are circumcised) between the ages of
12 and 14. But GMP defines adulthood based on a much more
contemporary model -- John Hughes' film, Sixteen Candles.

On Saturday, August 7th, Guerrilla Masquerade Party will throw our
sixteenth party -- celebrating our transition to adulthood and our
loss of innocence with "CHILDHOOD TRAUMA".

Dress up as a storybook character, super hero, or another childhood
idol. Come dressed as what you wanted to be when you grew up.
Disguise yourself as Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. Surround
yourself (or cover yourself) with beloved toys. Become your worst
childhood fear for the night -- a monster, a kidnapper, or Nancy
Reagan. Or come as those things that stole your innocence: Relive
puberty, be that kid who told you the Easter Bunny was your parents,
reenact the first time you put on your Mom's makeup, or come as the
prostitute your dad got you for your birthday.

The location where we'll taste adulthood for the first time will be
announced closer to the night of the party.

See you then!
