Day of the Dead Festival

Seattle Spin writes:

Festival: Day of the Dead, Nov 5th, 7 PM, free. If you're unfamiliar with this Mexican celebration, it looks sort of spooky at first; however, it is not a morbid occasion, but a celebration of the deceased. Events include a procession, art show, music, and activities for the kids.

(Peter Thompson, USA, 2003, 90 min.)
A profound, thoroughly original documentary that focuses on the filmmaker’s
attempts over the course of a decade to capture the relationship between
Mayan Shaman Don Chabo and his only apprentice, Chicago-based anthropologist
William Hanks, EL MOVIMIENTO is one of the most innovative and exciting
documentaries of recent years.

“A major, neglected filmmaker… Philosophically and aesthetically, Thompson’s
films are as beautiful and provocative as any contemporary American
independent work that comes to mind. But they’re also packed with secrets
and resist being paraphrased or even decoded.” –Jonathan Rosenbaum

Goodwill Glitter Sale

Seattle Spin writes:

What's more irritating, missing a great deal or hearing someone brag about the great deal she got? Here's your chance to come out on the good end and annoy someone else this time by getting last season's holiday glitz for a fraction of the price. Evening wear, tuxedos, and silk, satin, and sequined dresses; everything you need to turn heads. Words of advice: arrive early and wear bathing suits or leotards since dressing rooms are not available.

Goodwill Glitter Sale, Nov 6th, 9 AM, at the Goodwill at 1400 South Lane Street.

Toy Camera photography workshop on Vashon Island.

Michelle writes:

Hi everyone!

A reminder that I'll be teaching a workshop on Holga and Toy Camera
photography on Vashon Nov 6th and 13th. It's open to anyone - no
photography experience necessary, but also good for advanced students who
want to try out playing with plastic. It's easy to get to Vashon, and it'll
be a fun time, so consider joining in. The second meeting is for reviewing
work produced during the week and isn't mandatory (and I could meet with
city folks separately).

Thanks!
Michelle

Here's the official scoop:

Toying with Creativity:
The Joys (and frustrations) of Low-Tech Photography

Instructor: Michelle Bates
Come play with plastic! Forget f-stops and metering; learn the joys of
composing and shooting with a simple cheap camera, and the unique results
you can achieve, using the Holga 120s. In this workshop, we will cover the
theory, history and current use of toy cameras through slides and examples
of cameras, images and published works. We will prepare and learn how to
load, shoot (outdoors & indoors) and unload Holgas (included with workshop)
and discuss problems of processing and printing. Bring 1-2 rolls of 120 B&W
or color negative film.

-Two Saturdays, November 6, 10 am-3 pm & November 13, 12-2 pm
-Tuition: $60 + $15 for Holga camera (optional)

CHICKEN JOHNS' CHAOS CABARET @ Catwalk

I went last year and I thought it was pretty lame. There were only two stunts that were actually good. The rest was crap - but the audience was friendly. One of the good acts was performed by a very flexible guy ('Rubberboy'), who squeezed himself through small objects that we use every day. I forgot what the other acceptable act was. Actually I missed both performances that were pointed out as "good" from people whose opinion I respect. I had to leave a couple of times, because I just couldn't stand watching crap for 4 hours. I think you have to be a Burner if you want to get out anything valuable from this event. You would go in order to meet your Burning Man friends that you see every weekend, or if you want to meet other Burning Man people you might have met at this year's Burning Man - if you remember them. Then you would probably talk about how great this year's Burning Man was and how you couldn't wait until you can buy tickets for next year's Burning Man. Isn't ! this fun?

Sweet Moves @ Toys in Babeland

Jodi writes:

Hey all,

This is a little opening parta-hay for Sweet Moves billed as
the "bedroom rockstar workout". The vid is designed to work you out--and
work you up for a lil' som'thin' som'thin' afterwards. It is full of hot
mamas and papas in ridiculous outfits and executive produced by former
Seattleite, Toys in Babelander, and associate producer of Dan Savage's
Savage Love Live, Tess Sweet.

The vid will screen on November 7th at 11am at Toys in Babeland, 707 East
Pike Street on Capitol Hill. Yup, that's right, 11am on a Sunday, but I can
promise a pile of gorgeous babes, some seriously sexy surroundings, and
mebbe even a discount on the vid!

Laurie Anderson @ CoCA

Laurie Anderson at CoCA? First I thought this was a typo:

Center on Contemporary Art is very pleased to announce an artist-talk and mini-performance by internationally acclaimed performance artist, Laurie Anderson on Tuesday, November 9th at 2 PM at CoCA. Through a special arrangement with Seattle Theater Group, CoCA Members & the public may purchase "best seats in the house" tickets for Laurie Anderson at the Moore Theater for either November 8th or 9th and attend this special appearance by Laurie Anderson at CoCA at 2 PM on Tuesday, November 9th. The artist-talk and mini-performance will be moderated by Lane Czaplinski, Artistic Director of On the Boards.

Tickets are still available at $75 and include either performance at the Moore Theater AND the artist-talk and mini-performance at CoCA. Tickets are very limited and can be purchased only at CoCA or by calling (206) 728-1980. Tickets must be purchased by October 27th.

What is Laurie Anderson doing in these days?

"In this new work, my ambition is to write an epic poem made of songs, images, and stories that relate in new ways; my plan is to invent a language that will explore the contemporary meanings of freedom and time."

"Research for this piece involves a lot of travel as well as my work with NASA where, as artist-in-residence, I am looking at nanotechnology and imaging."

"My dream is to make a work that will focus on spirituality and consumerism, a work that will attempt to be a true portrait of this country at the beginning of our century."

- Laurie Anderson

CoCA cracks me up: Who has the time to go to CoCA on Tuesday and watch Grandma Laurie doing her wacky mini-performance about NASA's nanotechnology and true spiritual consumerism for seventy five bucks?
