Flyin' Brian Robinson's Thru-Hike Odyssey

In October of 2001, Brian Robinson made history. Having hiked 7,371 miles in 300 days, Brian became the first person to complete all three of the country’s National Scenic Trails in a single calendar year. Now, the world’s most accomplished long-distance hiker is coming to Seattle.

Robinson will present a slide show of his epic journey on Thursday, October 10, 7 p.m. at the REI in Seattle. He has received national attention for his unique accomplishment: he hiked all of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, the 3,200-mile Continental Divide Trail and the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail in 2001, completing his journey on October 27 in Maine. He hopes the interest in his hike will raise awareness of these National Scenic Trails, which need public support and will only survive as long as they are valued. Sponsored by the Pacific Crest Trail Association and REI, this presentation of Brian’s remarkable odyssey is absolutely free.

The Pacific Crest Trail Association is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail for the enjoyment, education and adventure of hikers and equestrians. Visit www.pcta.org for information on the trail and the work of the organization.

Original Pub Mixer @ Ten Mercer.

For those who haven't been to a Pub Mixer before, here's a little description from Andrea Martin:

It's probably the most unstructured Space City Mixer event in that people just show up, have a drink and start socializing. Lately the Pub Mixers have had over 200 attendees, so by 8:15 or so, we're usually about the entire bar. The idea is to mingle, meet new people, see those you know. Everyone is invited - friends, co-workers, your significant other, etc. It's a fun, friendly "mixing" event. They usually go until 9:30/10. Hope that helps!

Ten Mercer on lower Queen Anne, 7:30 pm.

ARTWORKS REOPENING AT EMERGENCE

This information is coming from Seattle Fools (http://www.seattlefools.org), which have been very quiet lately. It turned out they are not dead, they just smell funny:

We here at Seattle Fools have been in sensitive negotiations with Paul Allen's holding company, Vulcan Ventures. Due to the delicate nature of these talks, we've been obliged to maintain a low profile. But as a result, we have received a generous grant from the Paul Allen Foundation for Foolishness.

Maybe Party Volcano should also apply for a grant and become Paul Allen's Party Volcano Ventures. Anyway, here is the info:

Paul Allen said to us, kids, you really need some better digs if you're going to keep inviting me down here for G&Ts. So please join us for ARTWORKS Re-Opening and Artworks Panels
- Silent Auction IN OUR NEW SPACE W/EMERGENCE GALLERY.
Featuring: Live Painting; Youth/Artworks Crew created murals for silent auction; Food; Music; Poetry; and more...
ARTWORKS: Empowering youth through the creation of public art.

October 10th, 6PM - 8PM

"Slugs on Salt" @ 321 3rd Ave. S

Press release:

Joon Miette's "Slugs on Salt" is a visual rock concert that'll make you want to go home and make out with someone. If the makers of films "Delicatessen" and "City of Lost Children" Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, were to blend with the epic narrative style of the band, "God Speed You Black Emperor" and decide to put on a visual art show in a Pioneer Square warehouse space, Joon Miette Presents: "Slugs on Salt" might be what you would experience.

This one-night-only art show is a cohesive amalgamation of the senses combining photography, sculpture, painting, and video with a live soundtrack and obscure foods to create an environment that becomes an art piece of it's own. It is art that will have you wondering what it would be like to build a fort with the artists. Only you could ask them if you wanted to. And they probably would.

Seattle guerilla artist FLATCHESTEDMAMA will show a photo documentary of her summer love affair with a freestanding cardboard cutout.

Slugs on Salt's dreamlike live soundtrack is not only provided by the experimental soundscapes of Land! Bravo and DJ Urban Hermitt in the main gallery space, but by live electronic music in the elevator of the warehouse space provided by: Cass Corridor and Balsa. (Balsa is Carl Sagan's Lullaby.)

Date of reception and only day of show: October 11th 2002 7pm to 11pm
321 3rd Ave. S (Between Seattle Lighting and King Street Station)
Look for "Joon Miette Presents: 'Slugs on Salt'" signs

"HYSTERIA" @911 Media Arts Center

911 Media Arts and Vertical Pool presents the Northwest premiere of Antero Alli's "HYSTERIA". Here is the synopsis:

1991; the Serb-Croatian War. Ikar (JAKOB BOKULICH), a young Croatian soldier and devout Catholic, is sent on a military mission to bomb a church where he meets three gypsies who offer him tea made from the hallucinagenic datura flower. Ikar drinks the tea and has a vision of the Virgin Mary who tells him Her plans for his future. Ten years later, Ikar follows his vision to post-9/11 America, settles in Oakland and takes up boxing. His new neighbors, two Persian sisters, notice the handsome, reclusive boxer. Sexually aggressive Peri (ANASTASIA VEGA) pursues him, much to the dread of her sister, Marian (ATOSA BABAOFF), whose plans for a big family dinner are subverted when Peri invites Ikar to a wild pagan fire ritual that same night, an event that Ikar embraces as a sign for the fulfillment of his mission.

Sounds really boring. But Phil Hall (filmthreat.com) disagrees:

"HYSTERIA is a profound and frequently disturbing work of intelligence... the level of artistry and honesty achieved is so rare to find that this film can easily be classified an instant classic; five stars!"

Evergreen Cat Fanciers TICA(The International Cat Association) show.

TICA (The International Cat Association) recognizes over 40 cat breeds for championship competition and exhibition. Most, but not all, of these breeds will be represented at this show. The list fortunately includes Bonsai Kittens. This is one of the rare chances to actually see the results of one of the most fascinating techniques used in modern cat breeding. In case you don't know: “Bonsai Kitten” enthusiasts practice the lost Eastern art of sealing kittens inside rectilinear jars to reshape them into aesthetically pleasing forms.

National Guard Armory, 2730 Oakes Avenue, Everett Washington
When: 10/12/2002 - 10/13/2002, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Belltown UnCorked

Amina has been working with FUnC to put on the wine festival in Belltown this coming weekend, Oct. 12-13:

Held underneath festival-tenting over First and Bell's Republic Parking Lot, "Belltown UnCorked" will showcase more than a dozen Belltown restaurants - from Mama's to Mistral - and many of the area's "urban garage" micro wineries (wine made in the family garage!! - yes, it's true, and in high demand by the top notch restaurants - power to the people!).

Admission ($20) includes entry plus five "taste tokens" which can be exchanged for any combination of food or glasses of wine. Additional tokens will also be available at the event. There will be two specially-ticketed events - the "Winemaker's Luncheon," and the "Gospel Brunch."

If you like to head out with friends the "morning after" for brunch, I recommend checking out the "Gospel Brunch." Brunch is only $15 and includes a day pass to the festival. The outstanding gospel performance of Kent Stevenson and the Urban Rhythm Chorus is sure to lift your spirits and take that hangover away!

Outdoors, rain or shine, at 2318 1st Avenue, between Battery and Bell. In the (fully-tented) Republic parking lot.
Tickets for "Belltown UnCorked" are on sale now at
www.belltownevents.com, at Seattle Cellars, at 2505 Second Avenue, or via phone, at (206) 633-3764.
The event will be open each day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Cranberry Harvest Festival in Westport, WA.

The town that brought you the All Triumph Drive-In and the dubious Chainsaw Carving Competition in August is now preparing for another festival:

Celebrating the harvest of Cranberries is a tradition going back almost 100 years. At the historic Community Hall you will find local crafts featuring, of course, the cranberry in food, drink and decoration. You may also enjoy bog tours or the cranberry cook off contest. At the Cranberry Heritage Museum you will find live entertainment as well as cranberry and area artifacts. There will also be artists in action at the district in Westport. The Annual Firefly Parade is a must see event.

Westport, WA. Sat 10/12 - Sun 10/13.

EARTHDANCE NORTHWEST 2002 in Oregon

EARTHDANCE 1999 was the event that spawned the idea and creation of the first PHOENIX FESTIVAL (2000). So, what better way to celebrate the end of Phoenixfest by gathering back the ORIGINAL crew responsible for EARTHANCE 1999:

Including several NEW dedicated fellows... To host for you, the people, another 24hour indoor/outdoor jamboree. This year, Earthdance will be held just outside of Portland, on a vast stretch of private property in the Pacific Northwest. Our goal is to bring people together from different groups within the art and music community and work together to create a cohesive and positive event that will help to further spread the Earthdance vision and promote collaboration between groups.

The event will begin at NOON on Saturday Oct 12, 2002 with music and daytime workshops. As the sun sets we will all take part in a potluck dinner at the space, and as night settles over the field we will come together to dance and enjoy what we have built throughout the day.

Like always... the highlight of EARTHDANCE is when every DJ in the world plays the same track similtaneously, uniting all dancefloors across the world. THIS HAPPENS AT *4 PM* - DON'T MISS IT! (Expect a 3-4 hour drive from Seattle. 30minutes from portland. Or two hours from Eugene)

All profits from Earthdance go directly to The Milagro Foundation. (www.milagrofoundation.org/)
Directions will be available on the website:
