Katy Stone @ Suyama Space

The very talented Katy Stone has a new large scale installation showing at the Suyama shop. Stone will also be giving an artist’s lecture on Sat at Noon.

Her work is wholly original, very beautiful and well worth checking out. After stopping by Stone's opening on Friday, you might want to head over to the Roq la Rue opening, also in Belltown. Here’s how the press release describes her work:

Through the accumulation of multi-layered, configured and painted acetate sheets, Seattle artist Katy Stone combines a delicate, ephemeral presence of light, shadow, and air with the gallery's contrasting surfaces of decay and renewal. The installation creates an environment filled with both color and transitory presence. The extending components of the sited piece are evocative of organic movement, and suggest many forms such as water, clouds, roots, falling petals, sprouting shoots. The continuum of appearance and disappearance between one essence fading into another, one form into another, one season into another is the basis for this artist's work.

Suyama Space, 2324 2nd Avenue, Artist’s Opening Reception on Friday 10/10, 5 pm to 7 pm. Artist’s lecture on Saturday 10/11 at Noon. Free.

New Works by Leiv Fagereng

If you used to go to Vital 5 openings then you will probably remember Leiv's
paintings. He had a show at Vital 5 focused on airplanes - that was before 9/11 I should add.

Opening reception at Gulassa & Co, 10 Dravus St. 6-9pm. Free.

"Grave Matters" @ Roq La Rue

This is probably my favorite for Friday. Wearing black is easy. Roq La Rue Gallery presents:

"Grave Matters"
a dark and elegant group show about death and the afterworld
Opening Friday October 10th 6-10pm - Oct 31st

Charles Krafft, Kris Kuksi, Art Garcia, Stephen Kasner, Wayne Martin Belger,
Brent Golden, Daniel Martin Diaz, Brent Torvik, Scott Saw, Dan Brereton, Dan
Schwarz and H.R. Giger

For October Roq la Rue offers up a group show of artists working in dark imagery or subject matter. Featured art includes Charles Krafft's "Spone" (human bone china), Daniel Martin Diaz's Catholic inspired drawings, Wayne Martin Belger's pinhole photography of roadside alters, including the completely handmade working cameras he creates for each series (one featuring a small formaldehyde tank with a human heart!)....plus more thought-provoking and spine tingling works...Coffins! Reliquaries!
Tombstones! Hot Vampire chicks! Not For The Faint-Hearted or those with a
conservative constitution!

Special Opening Party!!
"Fete Noir"
Oct 10 6-10pm

Opening reception and party featuring macabre amusements such as a hearse
lineup, live music from members of the Black cat Orchestra, your own "memento mori" photography session, Beverages, snax, and more art than you can shake a shin bone at !

All Are Invited BUT!~

humans super structure (part 2) @ SAW

I was not too impressed by the first part of humans super structure.
But every part is different. PAN is probably more famous for his Butoh
performances. I am willing to give it a try:

October 10, 11, 12 an installation by dk pan
'there is no there there here where you left her bare' -
materials include salt, q-tips, video projection, garlic peels.

Secluded Alley Works, 113 12th Avenue.
Artists' reception: Friday October 10, 7 - 11 pm.

Annual Stranger Genius Awards Party @ ConWorks

I think The Stranger's Genius Awards is a great idea and it looks like they will repeat it next year. Amongst the winners are Susan Robb (co-founder of Party Volcano) and Greg Lundren's Vital 5. I don't think that anybody is disagreeing with those excellent choices. Of course there will be a party. The Stranger writes:

To celebrate the geniuses, you're invited to come down to Consolidated Works
this Friday night, October 10. The event is free, doors open at 9:00 p.m.,
and the Helio Sequence, Lifesavas, and DJs Are Not Rockstars (Princess
Superstar and Alexander Technique 2x4 DJ set)--all geniuses in their own
right--will perform. There will be an installation featuring art and
ephemera highlighting the careers of all six Genius recipients, a cash bar,
and a party that should last all night long.

Congratulations, you are fucking geniuses!

Consolidated Works, 500 boren ave n., free.

Vital 5's ARBITRARY ART GRANT 2003: DIGITAL GRAFITTI

Vital 5 is not dead it just smells funny - and they just won The Stranger's
Genuis Award! They closed the gallery at the corner of Westlake and Denny a
year ago but they are keeping the tradition of Vital 5's annual Arbitrary
Art Grant alive. Today is (or probably yesterday was) the deadline for Vital 5's 4th Arbitrary Art Grant. This is how it works this year:

1) Take a picture of a billboard, commercial building or mass transit (i.e.
bus, train, airplane, etc.) and drop the image into the graphics program of
your choice.

2) Introduce graffiti of some nature (i.e. writing, artwork, alteration)
ontop of the building, billboard or vehicle to the best of your ability, so
it actually looks like the graffiti is real. You will not be judged on
technical skill, but hey, give it a try.

3) Email us a small Jpeg (100K or less) of your finished image to:
info@vital5productions.com. Include your name and address so we can send you
the money in the random event you win. You can send as many pictures as you
like but only one image will be eligible from each person/address.

4) We will print a hard copy of each image, and on October 11, line the
floor of a living room with all of the entries. We will then set a parakeet
free in the room, and wait for it to take a crap. The first crap to hit a
printed image will be the winner and we will promptly inform you and send a
cashiers check in the amount of $500.00 US to the contact information
provided.

Since Greed should be stronger than Fear The prize has been set to $500. Here at Party Volcano's Graphic Design Labs we were wondering: What are the odds of winning Vital 5's Art Grant twice in a row? There is only one way to figure that out!

We have submitted the following 7pictures for Vital 5's 4th Annual Art Grant (see links below): "Always Use Seat Belt", "Can You Hear Me Now?", "INB at Paramount", "Madrona Hates You", "Popcorn Squirrel Combo", "Simple Math", and "Six Hundred Bucks".

According to the rules only one photo per person can enter the contest. We asked Vital 5 to pick the one they like the best - as long as they will print it out on a the biggest sheet of paper!

Bemis Building Fall Art Show

Once a year the Bemis Building opens its doors for the public audience. I can highly recommend this opening. Even if you don't like the art you'll have the chance to see an interesting historical building from inside. I would also give three Snack Stars to Bemis. There is always a keg of beer somewhere on the third floor and some of the studios offer excellent refreshments. Like every year I would expect an after hour party at the Bemis on Saturday hosted by the folks that have the show. Normal people like you and me are
not really invited. But now that you know about it you might be able to sneak your way into the party. Good luck!

Here is a little bit more about the event:

The Bemis Building is a 100-year-old industrial building that is the live/work home of more than 30 working artists. Ten previous shows have been presented, growing into a juried exhibition that focuses on displaying cutting edge artists. The past two themed shows "Germinate" and "Consequence" drew crowds of nearly a thousand people and presented between 35 to 50 artists each.

The Fall show will be a juried, non-themed show. It will be presented in conjunction with Art Detour administrated by COCA(www.artdetourseattle.org) and juried by Robert Brunz from the Brunz - Rosowsky Gallery in Las Vegas,Nevada (www.brunzrosowsky.com). Submissions will be juried on the basis of command of the medium, originality and distinction in the artistic voice.

Bemis Building, 55 S. Atlantic St, 10/11 - 10/12, noon - 8pm.

Magda Baker Print Show Opening @ Sev Shoon Arts Center

A friend of mine has a Madga Baker print, and every time I happen to look at it, I’m drawn in by the sense of line, texture, color. There’s a certain flattened perspective and wobbly balance going on that makes it fascinating to study. Baker’s latest work takes her wonderful off-kilter sense of composition and applies it to images inspired by everyday aphorisms. For example, the saying “Cut off your nose to spite your face” is paired with wonderful rough images of severed noses. The result is weird, funny and morbidly wonderful.

Sev Shoon Arts Center, 5206 Ballard Ave. NW (across the street from the Tractor Tavern), 7 pm to 10pm, during Saturday’s Ballard Art Walk, Free. (Yes, I know it’s in Ballard—which PV has severely downgraded in the past—but Baker’s work is enough to draw me there nonetheless.)

Hi,
This is a reminder for the Bollywood party at the Baltic Room this Saturday.

Come over to enjoy the best in Bhangra and Bollywood music.
Recommended: Come early to avoid the big line and to get parking, as there
wasnt any for nearly 3 blocks at the last Bollywood party.

Cheers,

Thursday 10/16

5th Seattle SketchFest @ Broadway Performance Hall

I would classify this event as "risky" - there is a good chance that you'll regret going after realizing it's crap:

North America's original sketch comedy festival celebrates its Fifth Anniversary! Seattle SketchFest continues its tradition of promoting the art of sketch and showcasing the next big things in the world of comedy, and this year is bigger than ever. SketchFest 2003 promises to be a unique opportunity to see this continent's best and brightest emerging sketch comedians all under one roof. Troupes will be assembling from cities such as Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Vancouver BC, and beyond! "The last few years have seen an evolution from a Seattle-centric event to a competitive nationally known festival attracting more out-of-towners than homegrown comedy groups." (Eastside Journal, 2002) Check out the list of amazing performers at www.sketchfest.org!

Party Volcano: Events For 9/26/2002 to 9/30/2002.

Last year we hit a party/event hole around this time. Given the lack of events that weekend we concluded that we hit that time of the year when you want to stay at home and read Rainer Maria Rilke. We offered you the following poem for your reading pleasure.

Autumn Day

Lord: it is time. The summer was immense.
Lay your shadow on the sundials
and let loose the wind in the fields.

Bid the last fruits to be full;
give them another two more southerly days,
press them to ripeness, and chase
the last sweetness into the heavy wine.

Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore.

Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,
will stay up, read, write long letters,
and wander the avenues, up and down,
restlessly, while the leaves are blowing.

- Rainer Maria Rilke
