Events for 6/4 to 6/10/2004

This week's edition is full of events. Unfortunately I didn't have any extra time to throw in my usual cynical comments and downgrades. That's good news for the Middle Earth Ball! I have several favorites this week: Chop Suey on Friday, PAN O RAMA on Saturday, Voyage on Monday, and Rockstar Suicide Karaoke on Thursday.

There are also two "off the sheets" private parties that I am allowed to mention if I don't publish the details: Juvenile Discipline and the famous 6th Annual Wigs and Skirts Party. Ask any burner you know and get the details. But keep in mind that plushies, polys, tapirs, and swingers are not welcomed at Juvenile Discipline. Some burners are more equal than others...

Exterior Night & Rock Hudson's Home Movies @ ConWorks

Adam writes:

Hello movie lovers,

I'm sure you all love receiving emails telling you how to spend your
Friday - Sunday nights, so here's another one!

Consolidated Works is presenting the Seattle premiere of "Exterior
Night" (not available on video), Mark Rappaport's half hour fever dream of a film, in which a blank-faced young man travels through time, sort of, to save his grandfather, a wise-talking gumshoe. And all this happens framed by backgrounds from classic WB crime films like "The Big Sleep" and "Strangers on a Train." This plays with "Rock Hudson's Home Movies", Rappaport's most famous film. "Home Movies" presents a Rock Hudson who looks, sounds and acts absolutely (almost defiantly so) nothing like the original, and who finds a whole lot of evidence in Hudson's films that nobody should have been surprised when it was revealed he would have been more interested in Tony Randall than Doris Day.

ConWorks is located at 500 Boren Ave. N., Seattle; 206-381-3218.
Tickets are $7/$5 for members. $5 if you print out this email, or tell the ticketseller at the door that you really did get the email and print it out, but you left it on the table next to the door and almost turned around to grab it but were already kinda late so had to just leave it alone.

ALMOST QUARRY @ Aftermath

Aftermath Presents...

This weekend two special events: Almost Quarry, a dance performance two-months in the making and NYC Loves the West Coast, a collection of films from NYC experimental artists.

ALMOST QUARRY Friday-Monday June 4-7, 8pm $10-$20 (sliding fee)
Almost Quarry, a new site-specific dance performance by Amii LeGendre and the LeGendre Performance Group. Almost Quarry explores how we watch, and the notion of 'almost.' The dancers will be interacting and moving amongst the observers - no formal seating. Audience members are encouraged to shift locations throughout the work, exploring vantage points, entering and exiting if they please, situating themselves in a fixed location if they prefer-- experiencing the work as a living, time-based installation

Shows are Friday-Monday, June 4-7, at 8pm, and a matinee on Sunday, June 6th, 2pm. Tickets are $10-$20 sliding scale. Call 206.325-6141 for ticket reservations or purchase via Paypal on the web site: www.aftermathgallery.com.
This show is performed for 25 people max. Almost Quarry is performed by Aaron Swartzman, Scott Davis, Amii LeGendre and Alia Swersky. with a new music score by Justin Gerardy supported by flutist Paul Marienthal
NYC LOVES THE WEST COAST

A collection of New York City films for the West Coast experimental viewing audience. Tuesday, June 8, 8pm $5.

Patron saint of the participating artists is the extraordinary Robert Beck, a soldier wounded in World War I whose recovery can be summed up by this old newspaper headline: "Movies Cure Deaf-Mute." Several members of NYC's Robert Beck Memorial Cinema, which hosts weekly screenings of avant-garde works, are among the presenters tonight. Of particular local interest is Marie Losier's "Bird, Bath, and Beyond," a black-and-white live action-animation exploration that features fellow filmmaker (and part-time San Franciscan) Mike Kuchar's musings on being born, cannibalism, sharks, the cosmos, shopping malls, pet parakeets, and other topics. 8 p.m. 100 minutes video, 16mm, 8mm

Aftermath is located at 928 12th ave. on Capitol Hill on 12th and Spring, about 2 blocks south of Union. call 206.709.9797 or aftermathgallery@hotmail.com for directions

GOLDMINE SHITHOUSE AND WHAT IS ART/WHAT IS SOUND

The press release says:

A benefit for What is Art/What is Sound's international artist
assistance program . . . Friday, June 4, 2004 Lower Level @ CHAC 1621 12th Avenue 9pm -- 2am $10, $7 w/ art supply donation (brushes, paint, etc.) Proceeds from the event will go towards crates of materials that will go out to the 12
countries where WIA/WIS has member outposts, in order to support inner
city youth and emerging artists in cities around the world and to encourage innovation in and aid in the preservation and education of art and sound! Performances by: Trick Deck, The Biznautics and DJ Libby

The Exhibition:
A unique community collision will take place at Capitol Hill Arts
Center (CHAC) Lower Level Gallery on Friday, June 4th! Artists from Goldmine Shithouse and the What is
Art/What is Sound Seattle chapter have joined forces to produced a dynamic new exhibition featuring a host of mixed-media work . . .

Sounds horrible, though:

Goldmine Shithouse artists David Hochbaum, Travis Lindquist and Colin
Burns explore violent and difficult themes filtered through their inexhaustible sense of humor. The contrast of horror and comedy present in their work creates a paradox that is relevant, entertaining and infectious.

Thematic symbols reoccur throughout their work, including death, bunnies, ladders to nowhere, black hearts and clouds, among many others. These visual elements are derived from a variety of sources, including classical references; the artists' own sketchbooks, as well as a smorgasbord of popular culture.

Inspired by the working process of Goldmine Shithouse, members of WIA/
WIS created six new collage works collaboratively. Debbie Ableson, Ryan Dickson, Raquel Williams-Martinez, Damian Sieradski, Lucky and Amber Anderson have created mixed-media constructions that explore the quintessence of each artist and his or her preferred art-making technique, including oil and acrylic paint, encaustic, Polaroid transfer, glass, wood, found objects, and text.

Each construction was started by one artist, and then passed on (or put aside until picked up by another) until the piece took shape. Further encouraging a communal atmosphere and dialogue between participants, the group's majority ruled in the decision to continue the piece, or to deem it finished.

Lower Level @ CHAC 1621 12th Avenue 9pm -- 2am $10, $7 w/ art supply donation (brushes, paint, etc.)

Stitches Grand Opening Party on Capitol Hill.

My Guerrilla Masquerade Party Stitches Coupon says:

Hey Guerrillas!

One of us Guerrillas has just opened a fabric store on Capitol Hill,
and she's throwing a big Grand Opening on June 5th. The store's
called Stitches, and is located at 711 E Pike St (right by Toys in
Babeland).

We got in touch with Amy and found out that she's ordered a bunch of
rainbow boas, wings and masks especially to help us Guerrillas get
ready for our next party and for the Pride Parade! She's also been
kind enough to extend a coupon to all GMP members for a 10% discount.
Just print this email and bring it in to get your discount. (One
coupon per Guerrilla).

This is not your average fabric store, for sure. The selection of
fabrics, yarns, and notions is all hand-picked and is aimed at a
clientele who need silks and sequins more than they need calico and
polar fleece. We can attest to the beautiful items in the store. The
fake furs alone are enough to make you swoon. And knowing that many
of us have limited space to work on projects at home, Stitches
includes big project tables for cutting out patterns, sewing machines
to work on, and a cozy area to hang out and meet others. They'll be
having classes in sewing, knitting, and crocheting, and welcome
groups to meet in the store.

The Grand Opening Party is Saturday June 5th from 7pm-10pm. It will
include a show of original fashions from area designers, food and
refreshments, and fantastic door prizes!

Check it out! Just don't buy all the gorgeous long-haired pink fur
before we can.

Wreckage @ Theater Babylon

Jordan writes:

Come join me Wednesday, June 9th for a great show and an after-party! I'm sponsoring a one night benefit show to support a local theater company and want you to come.
...
I'm sponsoring a one night benefit show of Wreckage SET ASIDE for my community: Burners, ultimate players, and good souls (some overlap between the groups, no doubt). It should be super fun as the audience will be made up entirely of our friends, we're getting a one night liquor license so we can enjoy a few drinks with the show, and there will be a kickin' after party for audience, cast and crew at Burnt Haus just a few blocks away. Goddamn, what a great way to spend a Wednesday night!

Here's the deets:
- Wednesday, June 9th, 9pm (doors and drinks at 8pm)
- Theater Babylon is located at 1418 10th Ave. (on 10th between Pike and Union, it was the Heaven and Hell space at the Rapture party)

- Tickets are $10 (regular is $15 presale / $18 at the door). This is a Burner / my friends one-night, invitation-only special price that I had to haggle over to get. It's cheap for great theater and it's a great cause. It's a 44-seat house, so buy your ticket in advance at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/354 (password: Gecko; it's really a private event, no joke). Also e-mail me and let me know you're going so I can get a headcount.

- The after party will be at Shelly's Burnt Haus. Address, if you don't have it, will be provided at the show. You can come to the after party even if you don't come to the show, but I'm going to hit you up for a donation for the theater, so you may as well come see the show.

More about why you should go:

• It's a great cause. Theatre Babylon fills a unique niche in the Seattle theater community by producing new playwrights at affordable prices. We all love DJ's and art cars and costumes, but there's more to the arts than these, really!

• It's going to be super fun. I've concocted a special drink, Sloe Gentle Screw Against the Wall, for the show, it'll be all your friends sitting in the audience with you, it's a great show, there's an after party afterwards (I don't know when else you'd have an after-party, really...before?)

• Support something that's important to me, Jordan, your friend

- More about Wreckage: http://www.theatrebabylon.org/seasons/04/weedman
- More about Lauren Weedman: http://www.comedycentral.com/tv_shows/thedailyshowwithjonstewart/dailyshow_weedman.jhtml

That's it! Looking forward to seeing you there! E-mail me or call me if you've got questions. Again, tickets can be purchased at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/354 (discount code: Gecko), and drop me an e-mail too, so I know who'll be there.

Thanks!

tig's Rockstar Suicide Karaoke 2nd Birthday Bash

The Three Imaginary Girls turn 2! I am a big fan of the Three Imaginary Girls. Happy Birthday!

THREE IMAGINARY GIRLS HOST SECOND ANNUAL ROCKSTAR SUICIDE KARAOKE SILENT AUCTION BASH!

Seattle, WA, May 30, 2004 - You've seen William Hung sing 'She Bangs' and George W. Bush sing 'Gay Bar.' But have you seen Sean Nelson sing 'Like a Virgin?'

You could.

ThreeImaginaryGirls.com, "Seattle's sparkly indie-pop press," will be hosting a Rockstar Suicide Karaoke Silent Auction Bash on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the Crocodile Café to celebrate their second anniversary.

The night will feature rockstar performances by local artists and celebrities, including members of Harvey Danger, the Catch, Kuma, the Spits, Kane Hodder, Fey Ray, XXX Audio, Radio Nationals, the Fastbacks, American School of Warsaw, Black Nite Crash, the Malinks, the Glasses, Jet City Fix, Slomo Rabbit Kick, and Tennis Pro, as well as KEXP DJs {Quilty 3000 & Darek Mazzone}, photographer Charles Peterson, Joan Hiller of Sub Pop Records, Chris Olsen from NoVoteLeftBehind.net, Carla DeSantis from ROCKRGRL magazine, and Pete Hilgendorf & Ben Heege of Blue Disguise Records.

The trick to suicide karaoke? The rockstars can't practice their songs beforehand. It's up to show-goers to decide what songs each rockstar performs via a silent auction. Once the auction ends, each rockstar takes the stage, and performs whatever song was chosen by the bidder. Auction winners will also receive gifts from the karaokers, such as signed CDs, posters, t-shirts, and other merchandise.

"Anyone who attends can bid on the song each rockstar will sing. Last year, the Pale ended up singing 'Roxanne' (The Police). I think it's one of the best things I've ever heard," sighed imaginary girl Liz.

"And hearing Erik Blood from the Turn Ons sing Journey's 'Open Arms' was a very close second," added imaginary girl Char.

KJ extraordinaire Biff Moss will host the event, and promises even more excitement. Biff is an experienced auctioneer, so expect live auctions. And best of all, his system has the capability to plug in electric guitars. Yes. The rockstars will be able to bring their own guitars (or guitarists) to fake along with their karaoke performances. Experts predict karaoke will reach such great heights.

As if you needed further incentive, the Imaginary Karaoke parties always tend to attract surprise guests, including Vendetta Red's Zach Davidson and the Posies' Jon Auer (both of whom unexpectedly took the stage at their Buttrock Karaoke contest last summer).

"I'd highly suggest getting there early to get a spot in the karaoke rotation," said imaginary girl Dana. "How often do we all have the chance to sing onstage and through the great sound-system at the Crocodile? Everyone sounds amazing. Well, almost everyone does…"

Three Imaginary Girls are no strangers to the Seattle rock scene. During the past two years, the girls have reviewed hundreds of live shows and CDs in Seattle and beyond. They also book local music showcases, and have hosted various rockstar karaoke events, such as their Labor Day buttrock karaoke party, their Silly Love Songs Friday the 13th Pre-Valentine's Day Bash, and an indie-rock holiday party that raised hundreds of dollars for local charity, TreehouseForKids.org.

Soire Francophone a Chapel

Wissam writes:

Salut,
