Events for 6/11 to 6/17/2004

I missed telling you about the 9th Birthday Party at the Alibi Room on Wednesday. It was great! Free drinks and free snacks (3 snack stars) from 9 to 11 - and I got in for free. Did you see Darek singing Madonna's Like A Prayer yesterday at The Three Imaginary Girls birthday party at the Croc?

So many birthdays, weddings, and funerals. This week I can't offer you as many events as usual. You might be shocked to see Ronald Reagan Memorial Service in Olympia on this list. But I only threw it in because it gave me the opportunity to talk about topics that really matter to me: sinking ships, dying seals, and pears. My favorite event is definitely the Billy Name opening at Roq La Rue.

Ronald Reagan Memorial Service in Olympia.

I thought every holiday is either a public holiday, banker holiday, or a burner holiday. But what is up with Ronald Reagan Memorial Day? Let me tell you a little story about how my home country remembered Franz Josef Strauß when he passed away many years ago. The ultra-rightwing governor of Bavaria died from a heart attack in 1988 while hunting with the Duke of Thurn und Taxis. The German (ultra-leftwing) satire magazine Titanik, which I happened to subscribed to, responded by putting a big picture on their front page showing Strauß's big memorial ceremony with his coffin wrapped in a flag and hundreds of people paying their respect. The title said: "The dying of the seals continues". That summer hundreds of seals had died from a mysterious virus infection and Titanik was obviously referring to that tragic incident - obvious for most Germans I shall say because Strauß kind of looked like a seal (I let you guess why Ex-Chancellor Kohl's nickname was "pear"). The idea tha! t it was in fact only a rightwing seal lying in the coffin at that memorial ceremony in 1988 still makes me laugh...

Billy Name @ Roq La Rue

I am excited about this opening. Of course I will go!

Roq La Rue Gallery Presents

Billy Name
Photographs from the Warhol Factory Era

Opens Friday June 11th 6-10pm-?runs through August 1st 2004

For June-July 2004, Roq la Rue is pleased to present an exhibition by Billy Name. Name was a key player in Andy Warhol’s Factory, initially visualizing and creating the silver interior and look, to eventually picking up a camera and becoming the scene’s erstwhile documentarian. In photographing his subjects, which included Warhol, the Factory’s Superstars as well as the era’s leading artists, rock stars, and assorted dystopian hipsters, Name pioneered a grainy, blurry, black and white style that conveyed an immediacy and intimacy in it’s noir ambience, and continues to influence legions of photographers to this day. The gallery will be exhibiting 30 black and white photographs.

Billy Name
"Andy Carrying Brillo Box Sculpture Through Factory"
Location: New York NY Year: 1964
silver gelatin print 11" x 14"

Billy Name was born Billy Linich on February 22, 1940 and moved to New York in 1958. He called himself 'Billy Name' because "People would ask me what my name was and semi facetiously I would say my name is Name. I thought it was cute and I'd never seen anyone use the name Name for a name."

While working as a waiter Billy met Andy Warhol and they quickly became close collaborators and conspirators in the art world. Within a short time, Billy became a permanent fixture at the Factory, having taken up residence in the back of the studio at 231 East 47th Street during his trademark silvering of its interior in 1964. Name’s background as a successful theater lighting designer (under the tutelage of the pre-eminent lighting designer for the avant-garde dance world, Nick Cernovich) came in handy as he quickly became a jack of all trades and essentially "foreman" within the Factory, from assisting Warhol silk-screening to doing sets and lighting when Warhol’s interest turned to film. At that time Warhol handed Name a camera.

With the gift of Andy’s 35-mm single-lens reflex Honeywell Pentax camera and the operating manual in hand, Billy Name taught himself the technical aspects of photography. He had soon converted one of the Factory’s bathrooms into a darkroom where he mastered the methods of processing and developing film. These newly acquired skills, combined with his background in lighting, his innate sense of artistry and his desire to experiment, resulted in the production of an intensive body of work that captured for posterity his "silver years" at the Factory (1963-70).

"The motivation to record the factory events did not begin as an interest in recording the factory as a diary or historical filing system, it was simply the next step in my personal art production. Having completed the silver installation, and because I was most familiar with the factory set-up (having set it up), I began working with Andy in the movie-making process, making the film sets and backdrops and also the lighting for the individual movies. Andy usually did all the camera work. During the run of a reel of film I would simultaneously shoot with the still camera all that was going on in the movie and around the set. It was more like a dance than a recording as it became an element of the 'performance' nature of the making of the films at the Warhol Factory. Andy and I both noted that the film we were using also had a silver base. Silver was everywhere. The document that remains from my still shots is actually my part in the whole performance, which was the Facto! ry. It's my little dance as an art _expression in silver on silver. All the prints I made were silver-prints as well."

Billy Name’s close friendship with Andy Warhol and his role as a trusted player in the making of Warhol’s artistic environment gave him the opportunity to focus his keen eye on the scene at the Factory, created by a core group of participants who largely improvised before the camera’s eye, evolving a lively, cutting-edge mise-en-scene. Billy contributed immensely to this atmosphere, as his understanding of theater and lighting was important to the essential look itself of the transformed space and silvered walls of the factory. The unique position that Billy assumed gives his photographs a particular immediacy, intimacy and knowledge.

When Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanis in 1968 the tone and atmosphere of the Factory changed. Billy eventually left after a long stint of holing up in the Factory bathroom/darkroom, and decided to hit the road. He hitchhiked around the U.S., which included a stint living with friend Diane DiPrima in San Francisco. In 1977 he returned to his hometown of Poughkeepsie, NY and reestablished connection with Warhol, but by that time he was immersing himself in environmental activism and getting a graduate degree in business administration.
Since then, Name has continued to work as a photographer- recently serving as in house photographer at the Gershwin Hotel. In 2002 the United States Postal service issued a stamp featuring a Billy Name image of Andy Warhol.

WMD will entertain the pants off you while educating about the dangers of concentrated ownership of the media, and raise funds for independent media producers and promoting truth in newscasting.

Building on the momentum of last year’s sold out show, which helped galvanize resistance to the FCC’s sellout on restrictions on media ownership, WMD will kick off with a showing of Amy Goodman’s "Independent Media in Time of War" at 8:30.

After this screening, WMD will present an action-packed roster of headline bands, media art shows, standup comedy, art installations on the theme, and interactive activities. Music will be heard on two stages. Headlining the main stage will be local favorites Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band, indy rockers The Bond, and and Seattle Weekly Music Awards winning nu Soltribe.

Boxcar will emcee and contribute standup comedy. Speakers will be drawn from the alternative press and broadcast media, including Geov Parrish (Eat the State, Seattle Weekly), Mahdy Maaweel (Somalisan TV), talk show host Mike McCormick, Daniel Hannah, and more.

Art installations will feature work by Josh Brown, Larry Neilson, Jessica X, Sara Kavage, and many others. An open mic and poetry program is planned on the back stage, along with unplugged performers. DJ ShapeShifter will provide additional music for dancing.
