Events for 7/2 to 7/8/2004

In Germany if a public holiday falls on a weekend day then... guess what? - Bad luck. No day off. Or as some Germans would say: "No arms, no cookies".

I am glad I came to the United States, where public holidays are not constrained by mathematical rules, cocktails are affordable (see Russell's Cold Lava report), and where I am allowed to wear a dress in public while playing in the mud (see Beach Naturalist 2004)!

Ben Jonson's Volpone @ Volunteer Park

Theater Schmeater will fill Volunteer Park with intrigue as
they open their 12th Annual Free Classic in the Park, Ben Jonson¹s Volpone,
running July 2 through the 25th. (And you thought these hills had seen it
all!)

Volpone has it made: He's rich, and on the very upper crust of society.
However, nothing seems to satisfy him, and he feigns illness - just for
something to do. Heirless, and appearing to be on the edge of death, Volpone
attracts all manner of greedy Venetians desperate to inherit his fortune.
With the help of his clever manservent, Mosca, Volpone baits and taunts
these would-be heirs into turning over their most prized posessions. But, as
with all great comedies, there's a twist, and Volpone learns that justice
cuts both ways.

Volpone
By Ben Jonson
Directed by Jose Amador
July 2 - July 25
Volunteer Park

This is where I usually put information on how to buy tickets - but you
can¹t buy tickets, because this show is free! That¹s right, FREE! Just come
to the park - it¹s that simple!

Phoenix Festival 2004 @ Trout Lake, WA

It's every year but I always forget what it is about. I only remember it's a burning man like hippie event on Oregon:

What is the Phoenix Festival?
The Phoenix Festival is three days of art, music, and mayhem created by the meeting of our minds with yours. Your creativity, energy, magic, and madness make the Festival what it is. Come play! Come create!
Do you have a crazy idea for something to add? Art? Music? Performance? Bring it on! The Phoenix Festival is your stage, your canvas, your testing grounds! We'll provide the basic amenities, but it's up to you to make the madness happen.

When is the Phoenix Festival?
The Phoenix Festival will be held from July 2nd to July 5th in 2004.

Where is the Phoenix Festival?
The Phoenix Festival will be held 90 minutes east of Portland, OR, near the Columbia River Gorge.

The Phoenix Farm -- Trout Lake, Washington

In the re:evolutionary spirit of festivals such as Burning Man, Tribal
Gathering, Woodstock 1 & Earthdance, PHOENIX FESTIVAL is an annual
autonomous music and arts festival which takes place over the Fourth of
July weekend in the scenic Pacific Northwest.

Featuring simultaneous performances on multiple stages by regional, national
and internationally recognized performers, Phoenix Festival provides a
safe and fun environment for thousands of participants to freely express
themselves through the creation of theme camps, participatory
workshops, special events, performance art, and a stunning variety of audio,
video, visual & interactive art installations.

Be sure to check out the webpage (www.phoenixfest.com) to get the full
skinny on art projects, theme camps, the marketplace, volunteer
opportunities and other community based events.

This year we have chosen to experiment a bit with the musical format.
We've dropped the main stage, opting instead to hand the reigns over to
the community and foster a totally autonomous environment. You will see that
these folks really took the ball and ran with it.

Globalista @ The Mirabeau Room

I met Darek Mazzone yesterday and he said that he would be DJing at the Mirabeau Room tonight. Shapeshifter will also be on board. Another reason to swing by (at least for some of our readers) is because according to Darek a funky group of young Brazilian ladies (20 of 20), which meets every weekend for fun activities, has discovered Globalista on Fridays - a place that plays world dance music including Brazilian tracks. They will probably turn it into a madhouse again tonight.

Beach Naturalist 2004

Ron Jeremy (known to our readers as one of the fearless writers for PV's Halloween Consumer Report 2003) writes:

You know what the problem with Party Volcano is? Too many damned parties,
that's what! It's all about late nights, alcohol, delicious snacks, and
nubile young scantily clad women for you isn't it? How about a good clean
spiritually uplifting family event for a change, sponsored by the
original party animal -- Mother Earth.

About a month ago, Puget Sound had the lowest tides in 19 years (see
http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20040605/_environment/66785.shtml).
The über low tides are returning again this weekend, then that's it for
another couple decades. Your readers have to drag their sorry hungover
asses out of bed this weekend and visit their local tidepool!

Low tides in Seattle are Friday at 11:24 AM, Saturday 12:12 PM, Sunday at
1PM, and Monday at 1:47 PM, with Friday the lowest. See:
http://www.dairiki.org/tides/monthly.php/sea/2004-07-01

King County will have naturalists at the beaches over the weekend...
http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wlr/pi/beach-naturalists.htm

And if you want to know the composition of the beach (are you going to be
walking in mud or on shale?) and where you will find the most invertebrate
species, see...
http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wlr/waterres/beaches/bmain.htm

Personally, I will be on the Olympic coast with a nubile young scantily
clad woman, a bottle of scotch, and my 60mm Micro Nikkor lens.

-- Ron Jeremy

Hmm, in Germany naturalists are actually nudists - not the kind of wimpy Northwest men that meet in the woods, wear diapers, and sit around a fire and talk about their tough childhood. Not that I think Ron would ever do that but this event sounds more like a clean family event. So clean, I bet you'll see a lot of wimpy Northwest men wearing Utilikilts like I did at the Fremont Parade. What were those guys thinking? I once was introduced to the nice girl who co-founded Utilikilts here in Seattle and I asked her: "How come that so many Northwest Pussies, who work in offices, wear your Utilikilts?" Her answer was: "Maybe because they are very comfortable?" That made sense. But on the other hand you have to draw a line somewhere. My friend Erik is a general contractor and one day one of the guys of his crew showed up in his new Utilikilt. Erik sent him home with these words: "You have to go home and change. You can't wear a dress here. This is a construction site!"

But you can certainly wear your comfortable Utilikilt on weekends when you play in a muddy tidepool!

Tanabata @JAPANESE GARDEN in the Arboretum

The star festival (Tanabata), which is very popular in Japan, takes usually place in the first July week. In this week two stars (Altair and Vega), that are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, come together. InJapan people plant little bamboo trees and decorate them with little paper rolls, that have wishes written on them in the hope they will become true.

Why? According to an ancient Japanese myth Tentei, the ruler of the heavens, arranged a marriage between his daughter Orihime (Altair) and Kengyuu (Vega), who lived just across the river (Milky Way). Happily married to Kengyuu Orihime apparently was enjoying her life a little bit too much and started neglecting her weaving for the emperor. Tentei probably didn’t want to be voted for the worst dressed emperor in the universe and decided to separate Orihime and Kengyuu by placing them back in their original places separated by the Milky Way but allowed them to see each other once a year:

"On only one night of the year would he [Tentei] allow them to meet, the 7th day of the 7th month. Every year on that day, from the mouth of the river (the Milky Way), the boatman (of the moon) comes to ferry Orihime over to her beloved Kengyuu. But if Orihime has not done her weaving to the best of her skills and ability, Tentei may make it rain. When it rains, the boatman will not come (because the river is flooded)."

Let's hope it won't rain this year and the boatman will come and pick up Orihime.

Village Fare Fundraiser

Felicia writes:

Dear Party Volcano:

Thank you so much for considering this event for the forthcoming Party Volcano.

As I mentioned in my email last week, I am volunteering on an event for a unique organization (the Urban Wilderness Project) that works with youth and adults to restore community and culture.

Jourdan Imani Keith is the founder and director of Urban Wilderness Project, and is also a nationally known poet, educator, and activist.

The event is on July 7th from 7-10pm. No cover charge. This is also a special pre-view of the new sister restaurant of Bleu Bistro called Chez Gaudy at 1802 Bellevue on Capitol Hill. The goal is to raise funds for low-income high school youth to participate in a 17 day environmental restoration project at Ross Lake in the North Cascades and a backpacking trip that includes visual and literary arts components.

A silent auction featuring meals at hip rest! aurants (such as Supreme, Dulces Latin Bistro, Cafe Septieme, Buena Vista Cuban Creole Cuisine), artist designed accessories, and a raffle featuring a "Belltown bliss out package" for two from The Ace Hotel, Casuelita's Caribbean Cafe, and facial from Wax On are just some of the great ways that you can help raise funds to support youth.

Again, many thanks and keep the Party Volcano going great!

Sincerely,
Felicia Gonzalez

URBAN WILDERNESS PROJECT invites you to a Village Fare Fundraiser, a celebration of culture and community to raise money for our 17-day youth wilderness trip! Cold Lava

The Hemingway Bar at The Ritz Hotel (Paris, 5/14/2004)

Russ (a.k.a. 'Loudjacket' Russ from our Halloween Consumer Report 2003) just came back from his trip to Europe and has some stories to tell:

Well, I went to what is probably the most expensive cocktail lounge in
the world--i.e., The Hemingway Bar at The Ritz Hotel in Paris.
(According to "The Guinness Book of Records," the Ritz Sidecar, which
is served there, is the world's priciest cocktail--at 400 Euros!) I
took a friend there and let her know I'd pay for her drinks--so long as
it didn't include a Sidecar. We had 2 drinks each, each of which was
like a work of art (hers had fresh-cut roses in them), and the bill
came to 120 Euros. (There was a certain daredevil thrill in ordering
these drinks--as the drink menu didn't specify the prices.) I stole a
couple of their glass swizzlesticks to commemorate the experience, and
SHOULD HAVE taken the pen I signed the bill with as well. The place is
decked out in Hemingway memorabilia (it was reported to have been his
favorite bar in Paris), and the sound system consisted of an old
phonograph that had to be hand-cranked to play. ! The faucets in the
bathroom were gold swans which spewed water from their beaks. A grand
place it was, but I couldn't afford to stay there longer. (Of course, I
hit up all kinds of other places as well.)

Welcome back Russ!
