Events For 2/27/03 to 3/5/03.

Another late edition. This week's excuse: My car got stolen - but I got it back. From my car's perspective it was probably a fun evening. They stole it at around midnight and took it for a joy ride until the cops started to chase them from Lynnwood up to Everett. The chase ended somewhere in the woods, where they arrested the suspect. My car looked like it was having a huge hangover. Maybe somebody from the Eclectolounge might want to cheer me up with some "stripped down Detroit style" poetry (a car, a body part, and an emotion in 5 lines)?

You’ll see crew and officer quarters, torpedo rooms, the coning tower and much, much more. You are welcome to bring your cameras, because the secrets of this weapon have all been declassified.

After SCM finishes the tour, you have the option of taking a short walk to the restaurant Piroshky, Piroshky (on the corner of 1st Avenue North South and Yessler) for a Russian influenced lunch. New Members Show @ SOIL.

In March, SOIL introduces new members Jana Brevick, Stefano Catalani, Helen Curtis, Claire Johnson and Jodi Rockwell.

Jana Brevick, metal smith and jeweler will be exploring the concepts of preciousness and intimacy in formats other than jewelry. Control panels become intimate because of the interaction and touch associated with the original object and precious because of what it does and can do for the operator. Also in the show are photos of window sills. This display place for the home exhibits items seen as precious or accidental. Loved or forgotten. Used or avoided.

Stefano Catalani, curator and writer, will create an installation outside the gallery addressing aspects of culture and ethics.

Helen Curtis, a glass artist who combines glass with unexpected materials, will create an installation exploring ideas of translucence, envelopment and progression.

Claire Johnson explores the language of the body during ritual bloodletting in her recent paintings. Known for her vivid color and warmth she recalls early religious altar pieces with her reverent, tender depictions of the transformative qualities of blood.

Jodi Rockwell, an installation artist describes her work as ” .. Materials orchestrated to act on their own accord, forming and decaying into a metaphor for our lives.”
