Events for 6/18 to 6/24/2004

Weddings, birthdays, and funerals. This week we've got Future Soul's last show, I (Heart) Shiva is turning 2, and JAG Design and -O- Design Studio are celebrating their first year anniversary.

It must be the weather but this week you'll find a bunch of upgrades (including a Letter to the Editor). Time was running out and but "Antony and Cleopatra" at ConWorks didn't make it on the upgrade list. So let me at least mention here that I have heard is actually pretty good. caucusing, fashionshow/danceparty, writing center, spoken word, food, and
much more! Go to www.bend-it.org for a full schedule.

You can register for the festival day of, or go on line and fill out a
form. This event is geared towards young queer people and thier allies
(post-youth). We have performers coming from Portland and Olympia and
film programs from festivals in Minneapolis and San Fransisco. If you are
interested we are still looking for volunteers.

THIS EVENT IS FREE- JUNE 18TH-20TH - SEATTLE, WA (CAPITOL HILL)

One Hundred Artists

Jaq writes:

In support of MoveOn, Dirk and I will each be donating a piece to
this event, plus buying something that another artist has donated.
I'm assuming it's okay to invite people to this event so that all of
the art is purchased and lots of money is raised--or just for the
spectacle of it! So here are the details: -Jaq

here are the details:

What: We are One Hundred Artists organized to defeat Bush!
One Hundred Artists each create a SMALL but substantial piece of art, bring it and a patron who writes a personal check donation of $100 to "MoveOn Voter Fund."

When: Friday, June 18th 6-9pm

Where: Sev Shoon Arts Center in Ballard
2862 NW Market St, Seattle WA 98107
(Corner of Market St and NW 30th -- exactly where Market and Shilshole split, less than 1/4 mile East of the Locks, opposite Stone Gardens, and Taco Time)

Why: The most serious threat to the Republican Party is a grassroots organization like us dedicated to Getting Out The Vote. Bush can raise all the money in the world, but if we Get Out The Vote, President John Kerry will win.

Instructions for Artists:
1. At 6:00 pm, the doors will open for artists to bring in their artwork.

2. From 6:00 - 7:00 pm, each artist will fill out a name tag, label for their art, and hang their work. 3. Many artists are bringing several pieces because patrons want to buy more than just one. (And if you have promised your artwork to your patron, you can reserve it for them.)

Instructions for Patron:
1. From 6:00 - 7:00 pm, each patron will fill out the legal donation form, and write a PERSONAL check to "MoveOn Voter Fund". Suggested donation $100 or more! 2. From 6:00 - 7:00 pm, each patron will receive a red dot with a number on the back which will determine the order in which the patron will enter. Each patron will initial their red dot. 3. At 7:00 pm, the doors will open, we will start calling numbers and patrons will rush in to buy art!! 4. After each patron has selected an artwork, they can donate again to get another red dot.

Please bring a beverage, a finger food snack. There will be music, and lots of fun.

Fremont Parade

As you already know there will be the Fremont Parade this Saturday. Don't worry I will not repeat my story of how I almost got into a fight with a Northwest guy, who was giving me a ranch sized headache by explaining every detail of the parade to his son. This year I want to talk about nudity.

Like every year you should expect naked people on bicycles. I know probably half of them and I hope none of them will get arrested. Last year the police picked up a guy who thought it would be okay to run around naked outside the nude biker group. He defended himself by declaring: "I don't regard walking nude and being viewed by others as harmful to myself or others". He was totally right. But you still don't do that unless you are stupid. There is a difference between peeing into the swimming pool and peeing into the swimming pool from the diving board!

Bemis Art Show

The press release says:

The Bemis Building is pleased to present its Spring Visual Art show,
A show featuring 20 plus juried artists as selected by Stephen Lyons
and Peggy Weiss, as well as featuring the work of The Bemis Buildings
resident artists. An exhibition of numerous talents, exploring the
arts and mastering the medium into visions of their own.

Twelve previous shows have been presented growing into what is now a
juried exhibition of the arts that focuses on displaying cutting edge
artists without current gallery representation. The backgrounds from
the contributing artists vary enormously, ranging from well- established practitioners to those completing their MFAs, to artists
with little or no formal background or training in art. This is one
of the few shows which integrally ties those artists immersed in the
academic art community with working artists, many from the Seattle
and surrounding areas but will also feature artists from Portland,
New Orleans, Brooklyn and Savannah, GA.

DUALITY at JAG Design and -O- Design Studio

John writes:

Party Volcano,

Christy and I can't thank you enough for posting the information
from our E-vites every month. With both of us working, pursuing our own
creative interests, and organizing the events, it's nice to get a little
help putting the word out, and thanks for sparing us from the
downgrades (which we love to read). I think I recall meeting you once
through Jamie, but I wasn't aware you were "party volcano".

On that note, I wanted to let you know that we are excited to celebrate
a year at the 1020 Building, and are looking forward to our latest
event, Duality. We have some very talented people contributing. ..It
should be a refreshing contrast to the Freemont festivities that weekend:

DUALITY http://www.1020first.org/Events/Duality.htm

JAG Design and -O- Design Studio are celebrating a year at the 1020
Building and have a special night planned for Saturday, June 19th. This
event will be like no other, as we celebrate all the hard work everyone
has accomplished in the past 12 months.

The night will be highlighted by a special interactive fashion show,
featuring the hottest in the local fashion scene. Produced by Maneater,
with fashions by Wai Ching, and Sasha Clothing Company, styling by VAIN,
and make-up by Paul Xayarath and Hannah of Barney's New York.

We will also feature Live experimental music, video projection, fine
art, professional photographers, and a full bar.

The night is about "Duality"; inspired by the dual existences we all
have...between our day jobs and following our night lives, our public
persona, and our own self-image...ultimately between good and evil.

We encourage you to take advantage of this special occasion and dress
as your alter ego, hidden personality, or as you are never seen, but in
the end, you are either good or evil and be warned, as the Fashonistas
will be there passing judgment, so dress your absolute best.

To keep in theme with the fashion show, we will have several
professional photographers on hand documenting the event and photographing
the models...after the show, they will be photographing you, for your own
"photo shoot"...

We will also feature a slide show with images from the last year,
including Entropy, Propaganda, Ab-Strakt, Das Experiment, and many past
Artwalks.

GMP #15: A Rainbow of Fruit Flavors

By now those guys don't need any introduction anymore. Let's get to the meat:

Guerrilla Masquerade Party owes a lot to queers. It was started by a gay
guy, who was inspired by Guerrilla Queer Bar, and invited his (mostly) gay
friends to dress up, go out, and invade a couple bars. Since that time, it's
grown into a group of over 400 people from all walks of life -- All
different colors of the rainbow, you might say. June being Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual, Transgendered Pride Month, GMP is banding together with Male
Bonding Experiment to throw a party on Saturday, June 19th: A Rainbow of
Fruit Flavors!.

NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE: This month's party will be going down at the Quarter
Lounge, at 909 Madison Street. It's a relatively new bar, with an all new
crowd just waiting for us to take over. (It turns out Republic closed).

Pull out those Rainbow Mork suspenders you never thought you'd wear again...
Dress in a single color from head to toe... Cover yourself in a rainbow of
balloons... Grab a red wig, throw on an orange boa, wear a yellow shirt,
green skirt, blue tights, and purple shoes... Be a whole rainbow, or just
part of one.

And every rainbow has a pot of gold at the end, right? And a mischevious
Leprechaun might be lurking nearby.

Or go with a 'fruity' ensemble: Carmen Miranda would fit right in, and a
giant banana would have plenty of a-peel (ba-dum-bum).

Take this opportunity to be as 'gay' as you wanna be, whether or not you
are. The Fab Five could certainly bring their Queer Eyes to the party,
though we doubt they'll like what they see.

Like every GMP, this party is for all the Guerrillas -- Straight, Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning, Wondering, Wishing,
Supporting, etc., etc.. It takes us all to create an entire rainbow of
freaks.

And everyone's encouraged to join GMP and MBE as we strut our stuff and
support our Queer friends and family marching in the 30th Annual Pride
Parade, on Sunday June 27th.

Quarter Lounge is located at 909 Madison St., just West of the Puget Sound
Blood Center.

and we hope to present a great party for you all to enjoy.

Music:
A great mix of Bollywood & Bhangra music along with some Arabic and
Spanish rhythms (catering to all tastes and preferences)

Here is my birthday present: A vintage downgrade of Bolly Nasha @ Watertown from December 2002...

Bolly Nasha @ Watertown (5/12/2002)

After "Bombay to Goa" Chaya Benefit Nights at I-Spy and "I (heart) Shiva" at Baltic Room on Mondays yet another dance club has decided to establish an evening dedicated to Indian dance music...

It may become as popular as those Chaya Benefit Nights. You will know if it's happening at Watertown when you start seeing Indians arguing and getting into fights about Indian music (like it has happened twice at those Chaya Benefit Nights). The cheap drink specials are definitely supporting this kind of activity.

Happy Birthday!

Avion (LA) is the seminal stalwart of this scene and we are flattered to have them on board. Did I mention DJ Belan' Zek is coming to Seattle (from
Montreal) just for this occasion? We'll be spinning lots of garage,
international pop, lots of the french shit & yeye, and of course lots
of the most current pop/indie/nowave/whatever coming out of the most
glamorous orifices of our fair planet.

hey PV. we know you got jiggy with it on our night PLENTY of times.
please try and pay your respects this sunday as we close up shop.
thanks for the support. -jason

That is really said. Few people know that J-Justice was the target of the first ever Party Volcano downgrade (Subsonic @ Nations 4/6/2002). I was actually downgrading Nations and not his event. While I was definitely not helpful in terms of promoting Subsonic that week I have been recommending Jason's events ever since. He is a friendly guy and dedicated to bringing good music and DJs to our sleepy town. For that we should all thank him and hope that he will continue doing so. Please swing by at the Baltic Room on Sunday and say good-bye to Future Soul.

TIG: "Cinerama 7" Release Party w/ DJ David Gedge @ The Mirabeau Room

It's time for another upgrade - not that I have ever downgraded a TIG event. If you haven't been to http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com you should go and have a look at it. Their concert calendar is always a good source. Who would have known that there are so many indy bands playing during the week? They have their own love advice column (Love is Hard) and their interviews with local bands (Have Coffee with a Rockstar) are pretty unique. They also have one or two Imaginary Boys, who cover movies and did an excellent job filtering out crappy movies at SIFF 2004. You won't find any explicit downgrades of shows on their site but that's okay. I once asked (ig) Dana how they deal with bands that are "not that great" (which you cannot avoid noticing in this town). She said with a sweet smile: "Oh, we just don't mention them".

On Wednesday the Three Imaginary Girls are hosting "Cinerama 7" Release Party with DJ David Gedge at The Mirabeau Room. Imaginary Girl Liz writes:

On Wednesday, we can enjoy all three... FOR FREE!!! Time deets include: 7p doors {FREE}, 7.45p DJ set by Three Imaginary Girls {FREE}, 8.30p DJ set by David Gedge {FREE}. Bring a lil' bit of money to procure your LIMITED EDITION COLOURED VINYL 7" of the new Cinerama single, "It's Not You, It's Me." The night is presented by GoMetric! Letter to the Editor

Ronald Reagan Memorial Service in Olympia (Friday, 6/11/2004)

RE: Rebuttal to Regan's Honor

Ok, For those whom would disrespect the man who is credited to ending
the cold war and making the world a safer place for all people on this
globe I must insist that you take heed and leave your childish disrespects
elsewhere. Regardless of your political affiliation in this country WE
THE PEOPLE, respect our presidents in passing of Both political Parties.
ALL our presidents have successes and failures as do we all in this country. We owe it to our fallen leaders to honor them and to give our mature and
Civilized respect for their accomplishment and efforts done on our behalf. It saddens me when I hear of Petty Immature and disrespectful characterizations of this type. I respect you political philosophy and ideals and I love that I live in a country that allows for such open discourse. But Please give Regan the honor and respect that he has earned and deserves in his death. You will never achieve such an accomplishments an! d he has, regardless of your politics.

Step up and leave the childish disrespects behind.

Thanks!!!

Dear RTRH,

I didn't know we have Republicans on our email list. Or is this one of your cruel jokes, Dan? We could talk for hours about Ronald Reagan - or did you really mean "Regan", the head-twisting, peeing, possessed girl in the Exorcist? We could talk for hours about her too!

Either way, let me start with clarifying that my blurb about the Ronald Reagan Memorial Service in Olympia was not so much about Reagan. As I was disclosing in last week's intro Ronald Reagan's death and the public response to it reminded me on how leftwing groups in Germany would use such an opportunity for picking up a fight conservative forces. The same German satire magazine Titanik that made fun of Franz Josef Strauß with "The dying of the seals continues" got into real trouble when they modified a photo of Uwe Barschel, who was a corrupt and conservative politician that committed suicide in a bathtub at a hotel in Geneva in 1987. Titanik put a smile on his face and placed it on their front page with the title "In my bathtub I am the captain!"

Besides the misunderstanding that I was not talking about Reagan your scolding about making fun of Reagan amused me. You might not have noticed but this is a pretty silly email list - childish and disrespectful if you wish. Telling me to grow up and give Reagan the honor and respect that you think he deserves is like going to a psychoanalyst and telling him in your first session: "Doctor, we can talk about everything except for my dear mother." Our weekly letters are all about being honest, providing new perspectives, and sometimes even talking about your mom.

Thank you for making me laugh!

- PV
