Critical Massive (June 25 - 27)

Jordan writes:

Mini-Burning Man in the Cascades. Held at the Lake Bronson Family Nudist Park (no, you don't have to be naked, it's just where it happens to be held, so you can be if you want to be), it's a gorgeous location nestled in the woods, great camping, a beautiful lake with paddleboats and canoes, etc. Big parties Friday and Saturday nights, plus some theme camps will set up domes and art installations. I went last year and it was an amazing time. There should be around 400 people total, the weather's supposed to be beautiful, so you can't say no. Tickets are $40 and must be purchased in advance by Thursday midnight. No ticket sales at the gate.

Here is more about Critical Massive:

Theme: The Inversion Theory

Play beyond your universe, we'll meet on the other side.

What is your opposite? Who do you think you are, and how do you step
outside yourself? If you become too comfortable in your skin, blinders
close you to new experiences. Explore the universe, expand your
boundaries.
Welcome to your Big Bang.

Critical Massive is located at the fabulous Lake Bronson Family Nudist Park,
site of the inaugural Critical Massive in 2003. This year we again have the
entire site, and are looking forward to it.

TICKET INFORMATION
- Price: $40 for the weekend (sorry, no day passes). Children under 12
are admitted free.
- In person at Zion's Gate records, located at 1100 E Pike in the
Capitol Hill area of Seattle, WA .

I have heard of an undocumented way for getting discounted tickets, which might still work: Go to http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/366 and use the password "burningdonuts".

Gate times are FRIDAY, 12pm-12am and SATURDAY 9-10.

Fahrenheit 9/11 @ Meridian 16

Katrin is pointing out that Fahrenheit 9/11 is coming into our theaters this weekend. You have probably already heard of Michael Moore's new movie Fahrenheit 9/11. It has reaped widespread praise from critics. Here are just a few samples:

Roger Ebert, "Less is Moore in subdued, effective '9/11'," Chicago Sun Times, May 18, 2004
"Despite these dramatic moments, the most memorable footage for me involved President Bush on Sept. 11. [Ebert goes on to describe the scene.] The look on his face as he reads the book, knowing what he knows, is disquieting."
http://www.suntimes.com/output/eb-feature/cst-ftr-cannes18.html

Mary Corliss, "A First Look at "Fahrenheit 9/11," Time Magazine Online, May 17, 2004
Corliss calls the film, "Moore’s own War on Error."
http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,638819,00.html

Frank Rich, "Beautiful Minds and Ugly Truths," International Herald Tribune, May 21, 2004
"'Fahrenheit 9/11' is not the movie Moore watchers, fans or foes, were expecting. (If it were, the foes would find it easier to ignore.)"
http://www.iht.com/articles/521066.html

I can't wait to see it!

SUPERJEW SALE™

DJ Superjew writes:

I hope all of you can make it to the only event of its kind--the
SUPERJEW SALE--going on at my house on Capitol Hill next weekend. I've
decided to rid myself of my unnecessary necessities, and so, am hosting
a lawn party and artful garage sale. Now you're thinking, who wants to
tinker around and buy overpriced art supplies? Well gents & ladies, you
are mistaken, 'cause everything non-essential must go and I'm marking it
garage-style-low. Ever wondered what kinds of priceless junk I've
collected over the early years of my SuperJew-dom? Wanted a peek inside
the private life and material development of my persona? Need odd and
sundry items or maybe one of my prints? Weird retro records? Some 78s
too? Come on down.

All items will bear a biographical gallery label noting materials, date,
and mode of use (if household installation piece). Show catalog will be
available.

Seattle Pride March

Of course the Guerrilla Masquerade Party will show up too. Dirty Bunny writes:

Hey Guerrillas!

The morning of Sunday June 27th, we'll be pairing up Male Bonding
Experiment to take part in the 30th annual Seattle LGBT Pride Parade.

MBE & GMP will be floating down the parade route in a big white truck
decorating to look like a rabbit, playing thematic music, passing out
flyers, wigs, and masks to the crowd.

Everyone's invited to dress up and come join the parade -- whether
you're straight, gay, bisexual, or something in between. Wear any
costume you like, but keep in mind that we'll be walking a little
over a mile, so comfortable shoes and sunscreen (or an umbrella) are
suggested.

Placement of GMP & MBE is 97th in the parade (of about 144
contingents), right between the Vicarious Theatre Company and Pacific
Northwest Reconciling network. We'll be checking in and getting our
big white bunny truck set up in the staging area between 9:30am and
10am, and the parade gets going at 11am. Our staging area is at about
11th and Pike. So look for us between 10am and 11am in that location -
- right near the LGBT Center and the Satellite Lounge. If you're
having trouble finding us, look for the Bud Light truck -- they
should be just east of us in the staging area. And if you're running
late, just catch us as we go by.

The Parade route runs up Broadway, from Pike to Prospect, then up to
the Rally at Volunteer Park.

...

For all the details, including a map of the staging area and parade
route, go to http://www.gmpseattle.com/main.html

See you Sunday Morning!

The night will feature a stellar lineup of some of the finest female

TENTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY of the Olympia Experimental Music Festival

Amy is pointing out this odd event in Olympia:

THE TENTH ANNUAL OLYMPIA FESTIVAL OF EXPERIMENTAL MUSICS June 24-27th 2004

The Olympia Strange Music Society was founded in 1995 by Arrington de Dionyso and Jim McAdams, two KAOS dj's who agreed that while Olympia was certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there were other genres of very visceral music that were under-represented in the "scene".

What is Experimental Music? The Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics does not concern itself with answering this question directly, but each year presents a very diverse group of performers, each with their own very different approach to working with sound and performance.

Each year the Festival has grown considerably in international reputation among the connaisseurs of avant-garde music. Each festival has presented an amazing diversity of approaches to and backgrounds in experimental music, from new composition, free improvisation, avant-rock, avant-jazz, noise, electronic, and music that is undefinable except to say that is it very strange. Every festival has featured performers astounding in their years of mastery of their forms and instruments, with international reputations.

James’ B-Day @ Sunset Bowl in Ballard

Does James Whetzel really get older every year? We will find out on Sunday. Here is his inivitation:

Amigas y amigos, asdiqa’, friends, doste, amis,

It’s that time of year when I celebrate yet another wild and wacky year
of my existence.

Older and wiser? Perhaps.

In any case, I am happier this year than last year. Yes, the repulsive
G.W.. Scheisse is still in the White House, but my musical skills
continue to improve, and I have been doing more and more musical recording
work for more pay, though in that regard things need to get even better
even faster.

I’ve shaved off the goatee. My sarod has a pickup and I have straps on
it so I can play it standing up.

Also, I am driving a new cooler, smaller more fuel car, that has a CD
actually plays my CDRS!

And so on and so on blah, blah, blah, so many things in my life have
improved this year. Most importantly, though, I am still in touch with
all you wonderful people. Life is no fun sans friends.

Ah yes, baby, it is my birthday, and it is time that we take it to
Sunset Bowl in scenic Ballard. Let us get together and celebrate the
bizarre miracle of our contemporary existence by engaging in the ancient and
exalted activities known as bowling and karaoke. Sunset Bowl is
located at 1420 NW Market Street. I have reserved two lanes, but if we are a
massive crowd we can always get more. The fun and games shall commence
around 8pm. Feel free to bring your friends, and tell other people
that I know that might want to come because I don’t have everyone’s email.

And re: the karaoke side of things—although I would be more than happy
to let you in on my vast knowledge of the “butt-rock” repetoire, it may
actually be more entertaining to hear some of you all sing a bit. I
mean I am singing all the time right?

So please come out, or if you are lazy, incapacitated, or living
outside Seattle, send me an email and wish me well. I don’t expect those of
you in Paris, Chicago, Sarasota, Greensboro, Berkeley, New Haven, Santa
Fe, and Tunis to come out (though that would be exceedingly rad if you
did!), but send a nice wish or two as I send my best wishes to you.

Paix et amour out to you all, hope to see on Sunday, I will send you
one reminder,

James

Dolomites @ the TRACTOR

Photo Show @ Retail Therapy

Wazhma writes:

This month we are proud to present the work of Seattle-based freelance photographer Barbara Kinney.

Barbara moved to Seattle in 2002 after 21 years of living in Washington DC. During her time on the East Coast, she was a picture editor and photographer at USA Today, a picture editor at Reuters News Service and from 1993-99, served as a White House Photographer during the Clinton Administration. Her photos have been published on the covers of both Newsweek and TIME magazines and in 1996, she was a first place award winner in the World Press Photo Foundation competition. She has happily settled in the Northwest with her partner Trudie, a Siberian Husky named Kaya and four cats.

Barbara Kinney traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan this past April.

“Although Kabul is covered in dust from a 9-year drought and is crumbling from years of war and Taliban rule, I found a quiet beauty in the people
and the culture of the city. I have selected photographs for this exhibit that I hope represent that beauty.”
